Re: Sublime Frequencies

Loistava bändi. Lopun yamaha-elektrofunkit kitarasooloineen tuli aika puun takaa, mutta toimi hyvin.

Re: Sublime Frequencies

Eclipse Records wrote:

SUBLIME FREQUENCIES

*Erkin Koray - Meçhul: Singles & Rarities LP $23.99 (Sublime Frequencies)
"LP gatefold limited edition release. Erkin Koray and Sublime Frequencies are pleased to present this collection of rare tracks and lesser-heard singles. All tracks were recorded and released in Turkey between 1970-1977 and culled from Koray's personal vinyl collection. Includes exclusive photos and remastered audio. What more is there to say about Erkin Koray? An iconic guitar and songwriting genius. A voice of gold. Having founded the country's first-ever rock and roll group in 1957, he is regarded worldwide as the father of Turkish rock. Forging Western sounds with his own inimitable musical mastery, he self-produced singles and LPs throughout the 1960s and 1970s that shook and altered Turkish society. Erkin didn't stop at rock and roll. Over time, he began to find inspiration in folk sounds from Turkey's Anatolian interior, and radio broadcasts received from Egypt and Lebanon. He looked to the East from his West-leaning Istanbul perch, and began incorporating these sounds into his own work. This amalgamation was as unprecedented and unorthodox in Istanbul at the time as rock and roll itself had been in the 1950s. The resulting hybrid sound ignited what became known as the Arabesque music movement in Turkey -- which continues to this day. While Erkin has recorded and performed tirelessly throughout the years (both as a solo artist, and with the powerful groups he formed), his extensive back catalog only began to be explored by the international community in the 1990s. He is now recognized as one of the foremost global leaders of psychedelic, folk rock, pop and balladry. His music has stood the test of time more than many of his Western contemporaries and influences have managed to, and his prolific work ethic has not ceased. He continues to live and breathe music, performing epic concerts, and continuously plotting new recordings and strategies. His vision and integrity, coupled with his pronounced world views and inherent musical greatness, have made him the unique and magnificent living legend he is today. This collection features tracks not found on the many unauthorized Erkin compilations and LP reissues that have emerged in the West over the years. Ranging from the sublime to the surreal, these tracks offer an essential glimpse into the extensive repertoire of the great Erkin Koray." -- Mark Gergis, July, 2011

*Omar Souleyman - Haflat Gharbia: The Western Concerts double LP $26.99 (Sublime Frequencies)
"2LP version. Omar Souleyman is a folk-pop singer from rural northeastern Syria. Like many Syrian musicians, he made his name as a singer for wedding parties in the region, with hundreds of cassettes and CDs documenting his performances distributed throughout the country. These, along with several studio albums, earned him legendary status in the Syrian dabke scene throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. After his 2005 breakthrough folk-hit "Khataba," Omar gained wider recognition throughout the Arab world. After collecting his tapes for a decade, Sublime Frequencies released the first compilation of Omar Souleyman tracks to be distributed in the West. The success of Highway To Hassake (SF 031CD, 2007), and the enthusiastic online reaction to the promotional clip for his track "Leh Jani," led to Omar being invited to tour the UK and Europe in the summer of 2009. It would be his first time performing or travelling outside of the Arab world. He and his group, comprised of two longtime collaborators -- Rizan Sa'id on keyboards, and electric saz player Ali Shaker -- set off on a six-week Sublime Frequencies tour with label-mates Group Doueh. By the end of 2009, Omar had proven that his unique and charismatic delivery of Syrian electrified folkloric dabke, Iraqi choubi and Arabic shaabi had the ability to appeal to the most diverse of Western audiences. His success has continued, with further tours throughout Europe, America and Australia drawing rave reviews and leaving a trail of fervor across the globe. The rise of Omar's success has transcended the wedding halls and cassette stalls of Syria and slipped into Western popular consciousness. Despite there being no shortage of musical talent in Syria, dabke and otherwise, Omar Souleyman is the first Syrian musical export to have won the hearts of Westerners and Arabs alike on this scale. His trademark checkered khaffya, sunglasses and elegant jalaba are not uncommon male attire in the Arab world, but for years in the West, it is that exact image which has been excessively demonized. Perhaps one of the most striking achievements of Omar's rise has been watching that iconic image transformed from comic book villainy to something positively regal. The recordings on Haflat Gharbia: The Western Concerts, Omar Souleyman's fourth release on Sublime Frequencies, represent an hour of the best moments from the Western tours between 2009 and 2011, captured in striking fidelity and intensity. Fans will recognize familiar songs, as well as previously-unreleased material presented here for the first time, in what is the biggest sounding Omar record yet. Compiled and recorded by Mark Gergis."

molemmat ilmestyy myös cd-muodossa.

Re: Sublime Frequencies

pannan tänne, alan bishopin haastattelusta:

So, what’s next for the Sublime Frequencies label? Do you have some projects you are working on?

Always, there’s always a large amount of different projects that are self-produced by the core members of Sublime, and then there’s a lot of submissions from others that are in various stages of pre- or post- production. What we can announce now is we just released the Staring Into The Sun DVD/CD and book, we just got our copies here at ATP, and that’s the next item to be released. We have a new Omar Souleyman record coming out in the later part of the summer I believe. We are working on an Erkin Koray archival project. We are working on more Indonesian productions from older Indonesian music, their musical history, their legacy from the 50’s 60’s and 70’s. And a lot of other things. We are also re-issuing a lot of the CD-only releases on vinyl. We just started with two of those and there is going to be more coming as time permits. There are a lot of things in the works actually.

How do you go about targeting a specific release for Sublime? Some of it’s archival and some of it’s current musical bands like Group Inerane or Group Doueh. Is there a specific genre or music form that you want to explore and then you go and dig deeper in that region?

Well, there are, but there isn’t really a set template for it. We all have our specific interests and other people are submitting, people we don’t know are submitting projects that we are always considering as well, and if fits what we think what a Sublime Frequencies release should be then we’ll look into releasing it. But every core member of the group has their specialties. I am centered more in South East Asia and the Middle East, North Africa, Hisham travels mostly in North Africa and sub-Saharan Africa. And Mark is focused on the Middle Eastern and Asia, so there are just so many possibilities and we have a lot archives that we can put into production at any given time. Things are moving really quickly and sometimes we are surprised by submissions that will take precedence because we love them so much and we want to get it on the release schedule. We have a backed-up release schedule that really goes on for a long time so it’s hard to take new submissions right now. We will consider anything really, we will know it when we hear it, or we know it when we see it.

Re: Sublime Frequencies

Sublime Frequencies Supports Finders Keepers: Make Do & Mend 07

Label: Finders Keepers Records
Genre: WORLD
Format: CD
Released: Dec 2011
Catalogue Number: HELPFK007

Heavyweight, world-trekking label Sublime Frequencies select buried treasures from the FK catalogue. It's fair to say the majority of tracks are of Eastern origin, spanning Mehrpouya's deeply funky 'Soul Raga', the frothy slickness of Mustafa Ozkent's 'Dolana Dolana' through to Googoosh's kitsch shuffler 'Bemoun Ta Bemounam' and further (out) songs like Rung Petchburi's 'Pai Joi' and Rung Fah Puping's 'Pu Yai Lee Santana' from the killer 'Thai! Dai!' compilation. But there's also choice picks like Fusioon's freaky 'Cyclos' and the tense horror funk of The Vampires Of Dartmoore's 'A Handful Of Nitro' for good measure, beside a bonus track 'Some Say I Am Sweety' taken from the forthcoming Lollywood pop compilation 'Disco Dildar'.

522921_459430200738846_251489918199543_2012633_587985284_n.jpg

SF071 LP - Eat The Dream: Gnawa Music From Essaouira

This record was originally released on CD as Eat The Dream: Moroccan Reveries On Tinder Records In 1996 (Tinder CD 42825032). Original label out of business/CD out-of-print. Recorded and compiled by Tucker Martine in 1994, the bulk of this album features the magnificent results of a chance meeting between Martine and the late, great master of Gnawa music, Maâllem Boubker Ghania (1927-2000), who kindly offered to organize a several-day informal recording session in his home. Martine began rolling tape as musicians came and went throughout the sessions. These spectacular recordings from Essaouira Morocco are interwoven here with other encounters, including a wedding procession in the streets of Marrakech, snake charmers of the Jemma El Fna with their rhaitas, calls to prayer with children playing while James Brown echoed off of the labyrinthian walls, Moroccan radio dial surfing and more. The Gnawa are a mystical brotherhood whose ancestors migrated from West Africa to North Africa approximately 500 years ago. After integrating into the local Berber and Arabic societies, a unique cultural blend resulted which is reflected in their music. Their complex liturgy borrows both from the traditions of mystical Islam and African Shamanism. The Gnawa's trance-inducing music accompanies rituals such as the healing of psychic disorders and scorpion stings, Ramadan celebrations and animal sacrifice. Participants in these all-night rituals are invited into an ecstatic state. The primary instruments of this tradition are the krakebs (a pair of metal clappers) and the guimbri (or sintir), a three-stringed lute with a camel skin covering and a body carved from a log. The one short string and two long strings are made of goat gut. Limited edition LP housed in a heavy-duty tip-on jacket with an insert containing additional photos of the musicians and Tucker Martine's liner notes.

Re: Sublime Frequencies

Koudede - Guitars from Agadez Vol.5
7 inch SF072

SF072.jpg

First American release for one of the leading lights from the Agadez guitar scene. Koudede Maman finally steps out of the shadows and delivers two scorching tunes recorded live from the European tour of last year. The sinuous sound of the electrified West African guitar has long mesmerized listeners both at home in the Sahel and abroad, from the explosion of global phenomenons such as Tinariwen and Abdallah Oumbadougou to the recent emergence of the rawer sounds of Group Bombino and Group Inerane. Linking these first and third waves of the Tuareg guitar revolution is Koudede, an enigmatic figure who has stepped out of the shadows as one of the strongest songwriters of the Sahel scene. The Tuareg guitar revolution is inextricably linked to the the all-too-familiar struggle between a nomadic people whose age-old ways of living are bound to the landscape and the rise of modern nation-states and their categorical usurpation of the limited resources in a region. Like the sounds of those who came before and after him, Koudede’s music is forged in the fires of such political unrest and struggle. Born in Agadez (Niger), Koudede grew up in in the dust of the uranium mines of Arlite, between the foothills of the massif of Aïr and the sands of the Sahara. In his youth, Koudede joined the uprising and left Niger to take up arms in the rebel camps of Algeria and Libya. It was here that Koudede discovered the galvanizing force of the Tuareg music scene. From the young visionary who made his first guitar out of a tin can to his current avatar as the heir apparent to the legacy of Ali Farka Toure in West African guitar music, Koudede has blazed forth from a relatively small following in Agadez and Niamey to take the world by storm. His songs are rooted in the poignance of Tuareg lore, speaking of migration, of warrior virtues, of distant camps and difficult loves, and at the same time they reverberate with the modern chaos of warfare and the contemporary Tuareg crisis. This is the truest music of revolution - where the transcendence of historical poetry and the daily grit of human struggle are in dialogue, from verse to verse and refrain to refrain. Sublime Frequencies is proud to present the latest manifestation of Koudede’s musical journey

- Limited ed. one time pressing of 600 copies.

Re: Sublime Frequencies

tommonenkin:

SF000 - The Complete Sublime Frequencies Catalog

The massive Sublime Frequencies catalog collected by Alan Bishop and his team of avant-garde ethnomusicologists may be the largest treasure trove of forgotten recording gems ever unearthed. This is the only place to get all of the Sublime Frequencies CD and LP releases from SF001-SF051. An absolute monster of a deal, this would cost upwards of $500 buying each release independently. The collection comes on a storage DVD that loads right into your computer music program. Most of the $$ from this goes straight back to SF to further the search for more great music!

Available in 192kps mp3, or FLAC/lossless on 3 DVD's (add $25).

WARNING!! If you are expecting a sleek professional packaging, then steer clear of this DVD that we are personally going to burn and Sharpie-scribble for 75% savings on the greatest catalog of "world" music in existence. Also be sure your computer reads data DVD's. If you choose the AAC version make sure you use i-Tunes because it is an Apple specific format. Also FLAC will not play in itunes so make sure you are familiar with FLAC files if you choose this option. If you need technical help please email us and we will be happy to help at lobefoodmail@gmail.com !!

Price:
$150.00

Re: Sublime Frequencies

jahas, bollywood steel guitar tulee vinskana, bonarina apna desh huig

Out now! Limited edition heavy duty 2xLP. STUNNING!
First time vinyl issue of the out-of-print CD. Double LP Stoughton gatefold with the bonus track "Duniya Mein," (covered most famously by the Sun City Girls as "Apna Desh" on the Crossdressers release). Bollywood Steel Guitar is the most comprehensive collection to date of steel guitar pop instrumental music from India. All 21 tracks featured here were film hits from 1962-1986 and all the masters of the steel guitar sound from the period are represented: Van Shipley, Kazi Aniruddha, S. Hazarasingh, Sunil Ganguly, and Charanjit Singh. An entirely different approach that rocks, swings, and grooves through some of India's most beloved film tunes, the electric steel guitar as lead instrument transforms the already infectious melodies into a multitude of higher sound dimensions. This album was compiled and carefully selected from rare LPs over several years by Stuart Ellis. Here are some excerpts from his liner notes: "The term 'Bollywood' originally referred to Bombay's (now known as Mumbai) Hindi language film industry. Although there are a number of other studios that produce films in other languages, more recently the definition has been expanded in the West to describe pretty much all films produced on the sub-continent. But where in most countries a film's soundtrack would merely be used as a promotional tool for the film, in India, film music has become an industry unto itself with playback singers and dance numbers. The music is just as important as the film and lives on long after the film has left the theaters. These songs are, for the most part, the pop music of India. As with most popular music, other artists sometimes recorded cover versions of these songs. Of these musicians, a small number specialized in instrumental arrangements and created what could be called the elevator music of India. While there were a few who used the harmonium or 'mouth organ,' the most popular instrument used in these 'instrumental favorites' was the steel guitar."

Re: Sublime Frequencies

tännekin tämä, koudede soitti siis mm. group ineranessa. RIP

This Sunday 28th of October 2012, Koudédé left us too soon following a tragic car trash on his way back home to his family in Niamey (Niger), just after his very last show in Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso).

Beyond his Talent and thesis great master pieces, we will keep in our hearts and minds his kindness, his charisma and all these moments shared with him.

Pillar of the Tuareg music and culture, Koudede has always defended peace through his songs and his words.

Culture must be kept as he said.

His work will endure forever. «' Alam'i, Algharge, Hatimanie, Souvenir...» »

Beyond the sadness we all feel, our thoughts are with his family, his beloved mother and his children.

Rest in peace

Re: Sublime Frequencies

NEW RELEASE OUT NOW!

KOUDEDE: GUITARS FROM AGADEZ VOL. 6

sXtb0.jpg

SF076 EP 7"

The second 7" from Koudede for Sublime Frequencies and the sixth volume in the now-legendary Guitars from Agadez series. The circumstances surrounding these recordings are the stuff of which legends are made: In January 2012, a major insurgency brewing in the far north of Mali turned Timbutku's Festival au Désert into a heavily fortified spectacle. Just one day after the festival, rogue Tuareg rebels launched a full takeover of northern Mali, armed to the teeth with weapons from the Libyan war that ended in the murder of Col. Gadaffi, the spiritual father of the Tuareg in their struggle with the surrounding governments. By the time Koudede's group made it back to the capital city of Bamako -- with Sublime Frequencies' Hisham Mayet in tow -- discord had flared between the mostly Bambara ethnic south and the Tuareg community in the capital region. With a Tuareg exile already in progress, Koudede decided after much hesitation to follow through with a live concert at Toumast -- the Tuareg compound in Bamako -- in defiance of advice that all Tuareg should leave the city immediately. Recorded on location at Toumast by Hisham Mayet in January 2012, these two tracks are a scorching distillation of the urgency and fire in Koudede's music: the pure sound of his people and their constant struggles. Limited edition of 700 copies.
p.s. With deep regret, Sublime Frequencies is saddened to confirm that on October 28th, 2012, Koudede was pronounced dead from a fatal accident on the road back to Niger from a gig in Burkina Faso. This news was delivered the same day as the test pressing was approved for this release. His legacy will live on through his music. RIP Koudede!

Re: Sublime Frequencies

tammikuun lopulla tulossa tämmöstä settiä:

V/A - Pop Yeh Yeh - Psychedelic Rock from Singapore and Malaysia 1964-1970: Vol.1 Sublime Frequencies
CD    SF079CD    21/01    743748066623
SF079.jpg
" Malaysian beat, pop, & psychedelic classics from 1964-1970." Features 1960s Malaysian music legends Adnan Othman, M. Osman, Zaleha Hamid and many more. " CD tri-fold digipak with two gorgeous and informative 40-page booklets." Compiled & researched over an 8-year period by Carl Hamm.Until now, for some unknown reason, the psychedelic rock movement in Singapore and Malaysia, aka Pop Yeh Yeh, has never been given the worldwide attention it deserves. This compilation -- Pop Yeh Yeh - Psychedelic Rock from Singapore and Malaysia 1964-1970: Vol. 1 -- is the first of its kind to focus solely on the Malay rock groups of this region. The Pop Yeh Yeh era, which took place roughly between the years of 1964 to 1970, coincided with the rapid modernization happening at the time in Singapore and Malaysia. Sublime Frequencies has already released many incredible compilations from neighboring Indonesia, so it's about time that the Malaysian groups got some attention! Pop Yeh Yeh artists instinctively cross-pollinated electric sounds of the West with Malay melodies, and added their own local poetic voice to the lyrics they wrote -- sung in Malay and sometimes Bawean. The Pop Yeh Yeh musicians started out playing in styles inspired by Western groups like The Beatles and Cliff Richard, but they eventually succeeded in creating a sound all their own -- a sound that is not only accessible to the Western ear, but also retains an undeniable Malay personality. Nearly eight years in the making, this compilation was exhaustively researched and compiled by Carl Hamm and features 26 classic tracks of the very best bands and singers from Singapore and Malaysia's Pop Yeh Yeh era, including M. Osman, Orkes Nirwana, Adnan Othman, A. Halim, Roziah Latiff and The Jayhawkers, J. Sham, Hasnah Haron, Zaleha Hamid, and many more. " Sublime Frequencies launches their first LP of classic 78 recordings.  " Compiled by Robert Millis, obsessive 78 collector.  " Amazing vintage Korean Kayagum Sanjo music from the 1920s-1950s.  " Limited edition LP comes in a beautiful tip-on jacket with two-sided insert. Sublime Frequencies releases their first 78 rpm compilation, and true to form, these are sounds rarely heard by contemporary western ears. This album has been compiled by Robert Millis, a long-time Sublime Frequencies contributor and a founding member of Climax Golden Twins. Scattered Melodies: Korean Kayagum Sanjo is a compilation of Korean kayagum sanjo music. Sanjo, meaning "scattered melodies," is a form of stylized string improvisation developed in the 1890s originally for the Korean kayagum, a smaller distant cousin of the Japanese koto. Stark and haunting, falling in the gaps between folk and classical music, kayagum sanjo employs a gradually increasing tempo, focused improvisation (the "scattering of melodies"), elastic rhythms, and intense snaps and vibrato that seem to power through the hazy abstractions of the 78rpm recording technology (these are old, exceedingly rare records that have survived nearly insurmountable odds: invasion, occupation, war, division.)  Presented here are a few of the masters of sanjo as it originally emerged in the early part of the 20th century on 78rpm recordings from 1925 to the early 1950s. This limited edition LP comes enclosed in a beautiful tip-on jacket with a two-sided insert featuring extended liner notes by compiler Robert Millis.
