FORKBOY "1993-1999" CD 10€
(Kaos Kontrol/Arkisto Rekords)
"A fork is a cold shiny tool / To pierce, tear and ingest / Whoever has the fork in hand / Controls the meal of its choice." The opening lines for the Lard song, "Forkboy" which in turn gave the name for an Oulu-based quartet formed in 1993. Born out of love for AmRep noise, AC/DC, Dead Kennedys and driven by twenty-something angst, Forkboy recorded three demos and one previously unreleased session during their 6 year existence and it's all documented here on one disc. Furiously rocking songs packed with gritty guitars and feedback, rhythm section heavy as an elephant turd and as the band puts it, "lots of shouting". The original recordings have been carefully restored and remastered by Pentti Dassum and the sleeve features original artwork and photos by the band along with liner notes. If you were there during the late 90s noise rock craze or if you have only recently discovered its splendour or if you just have a boner for hidden gems of Finnish punk/noise/rock, this CD is for you! Standard jewel case with full colour sleeve. Limited edition of 300 copies.

RUSTED SHUT "Hot Sex" 12" 13€
(Dull Knife)
Rusted Shut from Houston, Texas have been around since 1987. This four-song 12" was recorded already in 1997 during the same sessions as their "Rehab" album, but weren't released until 2008. That alone should tell you Rusted Shut are not here to entertain. This is pretty close to the dirtiest and most chaotic sound you can still call noise rock and no matter what you call it, it will blow your mind. Shiny Grey Monotoned pinned down Rusted Shut's sound nicely: "Take every instrument you got, plug them into something shitty, something with blown out speakers preferably, mic the drums via the next door neighbors house, and lodge the vocal mic halfway down the singers throat. Got all that? Great. Now, turn everything on. Good. Then, turn all available knobs all the way to the right, clockwise. Yeah, keep turning. Just keep turning until they snap off. Great. Perfect. Alright, now go....play something. Play whatever noisy, crazed racket you can conjure... just keep fucking playing!" This 12" has been sold out for years now, but Dull Knife managed to track down a few copies. Black vinyl, limited edition of 500 copies.

Containing the classic tracks "Dirty South", "Plead the Fifth", "Burial" and "Salvation" and more; this release will quench the thirst of rabid southern metal fans and obsessive record collectors who have waited years for this album to be available once again. The cover artwork has been recreated in the spirit of the original CD concept, but updated to represent the idea intended to be put forth by the band originally. Contains 8 tracks, 40 minutes and an insert. This super limited first pressing is only 200 clear gold copies with gold cover (available through Kaos Kontrol) and 100 deluxe glow in the dark editions with a glowing cover as well as the wax itself!

HELL DEMONIO "Discography" CD 10€
(Robot Radio Records/Wallace Records)
Brusque dose of smart, punky post-hardcore/noise rock here of a type that recalls a more raucous take on what the likes of Thumbnail, Bluetip and the Rye Coalition were peddling a few years back, rammed to the proverbial gunwales with energetic yelps, yells and tightly-wound, treble-heavy riffing. Each track is short-lived but manages to pack plenty of punch, rocking and rolling through such uniquely strange titles as "How to Enter a Church Within a Transparent Sphere" and making for yet another smart little number from Italy’s really rather spiffy Robot Radio Records. Very stylish sleeve in jewel case and slipcase.

LUCERTULAS "Tragol de Rova" MCD
(Robot Radio Records)
The first two tracks on this CD are really great, sounding like Arab On Radar covers of Speedking songs and the rest of the album follows this kind of dischordant messy post-punk trail with several more songs of lovely noise, even slipping in a headbangingly heavy riff in "Miss Ratched" that oddly doesn't seem that out of place. There are some melodic and quiet bits here (especially in "Tintinnio") but luckily they are few and far between and thankfully Lucertulas don't spend long with that accessible nonsense. There is however an ill-advised seven minute foray into ambient noise towards the end of the album. Luckily they do set things right on the last song and end the 26 minutes the right way. It is sometimes difficult for this kind of band to translate a live show to a record but if "Trago De Rova" is anything to go by this band would be a riot. Digipak.
www.myspace.com/lucertulas

LUCERTULAS "The Brawl" CD 10€
(Robot Radio Records)
"The Brawl" is Lucertulas' personal vendetta, a response to an out of touch society, based on the concept of punishment and surveillance, challenging the right to be oneself. A magmatic flow taking in and transforming everything in its path into energy, drawing its impetus from dizzying structures and oblique textures of voracious guitars, scathingly furious vocals and a rhythm section of grinding anger. Over these 13 tracks, without holding back, Lucertulas let their energy explode, on an album to be listened to from beginning to end without respite. Digipak.
www.myspace.com/lucertulas

PUTIFERIO "Ateateate" CD 10€
(Robot Radio Records)
Another odd bunch from Italy courtesy of Robot Radio, this time with a clusterfuck sound suspended partway between latterday Racebannon and first-album Blood Brothers, the whole thing yapping and squawking over disjointed riffs that pull in all manner of different directions like a bagful of cats tied at the tail. Amidst the crunching thud and froth-mouthed vocals (think equal parts Mikes Patton and Anderson with some odd bouts of "Space Oddity" Bowie) there's a sense of experimentation threading its stumbling way, from patches of wobbly electronica to moments where you seriously have to wonder whether this lot absorbed a trick or two from Zu the last time their carnival made its lolloping way through town. High points are plentiful, but the gradual build and seismic *whudd* of "Putiferio Goes to War" probably edges it, perfectly showcasing the band's multiple personalities as it shifts and clunks toward oblivion. Digipak.
www.myspace.com/putiferio

TIDE OF IRON "Sow" CDr
(Shy Bairns)
Some raging stuff right here, this Newcastle mob barfing out a glorious, noise-rock mess that recalls such big ugly buggers as Cherubs, Big'n and Pachinko. While others who've adopted this sound in recent times (Black Elk or KEN Mode, say) have tended to let their ditties hover around the four or five-minute mark, Tide Of Iron channel everything into terse blasts of hardcore-infused brevity. Everything is taut and highly-strung, riffs angrily wrenched out like limbs from sockets and possessed of a weird wet n' squelchy edge that adds to the unease rather than serving to dampen it. Icing on the cake is the bloke fronting the whole bastard din, his coarse, aggrieved screams seeming to just about hollow him out and lend things a sense of raw, unbridled desperation and might render him a shivering, empty husk by the end of it all but leave the rest of us smacking our livery lips and banging our cutlery on the table for more, goddammit, more! Comes in a special screen printed sleeve with insert. Limited edition of 100 copies.

BAXTER STOCKMAN "Romance" 7"
(Kult of Nihilow)
Finally, after two small EPs and one compilation track, Baxter Stockman unleash their first vinyl release. The bruised ass on the cover promises a violent spanking and this Helsinki trio doesn't fail to deliver it! Connecting the dots from Jesus Lizard's frantic groove to Steve Albini's testicles would make a shape resembling Baxter Stockman, but how many years (even decades!) do you need to count back until you find a new band succeeding in making this sort of racket sound fresh? After drawing a blank with your calculations, just get a copy of this 7" and get the gut-punch you deserve. Black vinyl in full colour sleeve. Limited edition of 261 copies.

HEBOSAGIL "Herätys" 7"
(Kult of Nihilow)
Hot on the heels of their brilliant second album "Ura", Hebosagil spits three new songs in your face, delivered on a shiny black 7" vinyl just like they're supposed to be. "Herätys" might be Hebosagil at their most abrasive, dissonant and chaotic yet at the same time there's a catchiness and such energy in the songs and performance that you'll need to cancel your online Viagra order now. Stick this 7" on your turntable and you'll be pounding like a locomotive!

BAD DRUGS "White Powder" LP 15€
(Rotted Tooth Recordings)
BACK IN STOCK! Bad Drugs is one of Chicago's absolute best noise rock bands, not just of now, of all time. And with the storied history of noisy rock bands formed by the oppressive nature of the Windy (not to mention cold, hot, overcrowded, and stank-ass) City, that's saying something. "White Powder" is an absolutely punishing, brutal, and gnarly noise rock record through and through. Other bands in the genre sometimes hide their lack of ability behind noise, which is fine and dandy 'cause we're all about non-musicians making a racket, but this is not the case with Bad Drugs. Each of these dudes is totally adept at their respective instruments. So adept that even the thick layer of noise that resides between phrases can't mask the skill residing in these dudes' skulls. By now you should know the Bad Drugs drummer well. He's been trapped behind the trap set for years now. Remember the awesomely monickered Lightning Bolt-ness of Slut Barf? Remember the post-Coughs art metal of Cacaw? Remember the heavy-handed cave punk of Heavy Times? Kyle Reynolds was the man keeping time and breaking sticks in all of those bands prior and/or during his Bad Drugs tenure. The burnsided bassist Andrew Martinec can also be found making noise with stringed instruments in the (literally) mentally challenged Arts of Life Band and raping skulls in the incredible Psychedelic Santa Traveller around the holidays. We're not exactly sure where guitarist Patrick LaBahn came from, but we imagine he spent the better part of his youth mastering the electric six-string in a dingy basement somewhere rather than developing standard social skills. You know one must learn the rules in order to break them successfully, and Patrick breaks 'em all with precision. He must know more rules than Coltrane knew and he's as good an axe-wielder as Dave Knudson. If Knudson had played with Unsane, and Unsane were from Providence, that'd be as close an approximation of the Bad Drugs vibe as we can think of. They have a better sense of humor (not present in their music, but) in their song titles than most bands too. There's the Windy City-centric "Ga'an Fishing" and "Go Ghost a-go-go". The RATM-spoofy "Chilling in the Name of" and the Verhoevenian "Robo Clop". And the album's called "Raw Powder". How brilliant is that? Fucking brilliant! Each and every single goddamn one of these songs R-I-P. Oh yeah, and the vinyl glows in the dark. Each side ends in an obnoxious locked groove. The art is fucking amazing, just like the rest of the Rotted Tooth releases. And it's limited to 300 hand-numbered copies.

CONDOMINIUM "Warm Home" MLP 13€
(Condominium Records)
"Warm Home" is the highly anticipated LP from St. Paul hardcore scuzz slingers Condominium. It follows a string of rather impressive 7-inches that saw the band emerge from more straight forward hardcore/punk to the realm of weird and abrasive that has since ushered in numerous comparisons to one of their home state staples, Amphetamine Reptile. While the singles certainly had a penchant for the noisier outsider vibes of hardcore, it was still difficult to fully connect the dots between the two. However, with the bands debut LP "Warm Home" it's certainly a much more logical and appropriate link than ever before instead of just merely being a convenient one. With "Warm Home" the band is allowed some freedom to really outdo themselves with the weirdo vibes here, setting aside a couple tracks of strange tortured strings and tuneless noise to greatly drive the point home with "Why Be Something That You're Not?" and album closer "An Arbitrary Choice Between Infinite Coexisting Realities". However it's the albums lead track "Life is Amazing" that is up there as one of the best tunes on the LP and is no doubt one of Condominium’s best moments thus far, combining a nearly perfect balance of hooks and bad attitude aggression. This is the second limited edition pressing of this LP, the first run of 752 copies sold out quickly. Black vinyl in black/white/orange sleeve with insert.

CD:

FLESHPRESS "No Return" MCD
(Kult of Nihilow)
One of two recent EPs released by the Finnish sludgelords Fleshpress, "No Return" is a nightmare of a million eyes, an outburst of misanthropic black energy lashing out at the world surrounding them. Featuring two long tracks, the disc comes in at around twenty two minutes, but every second is weighed down with some of the heaviest, most torturous psychedelic doom you could ask for. The first song is called "Dead End Life Crawling Thru Shit and Blood Soul Burning" and isn't subtle about what sort of mood they're in; a slow, determined drum plod opens this joined by a lumbering bass line and soft delayed guitar forming into dark hovering chords, and it's quite minimal and somber at first. As ululating electronic cries and the sound of sparking circuitry drifts in from afar, it begins to blossom into ominous slow motion black doom, coming together into a saurian dirge as the guitar gets heavier, the bass rises to the fore, until the music suddenly lurches into a monstrous blown-out dirge, a crushing mid-tempo groove surrounded by those strange electronic noises and psychedelic fx. Deep chanting vocals show up towards the end, right before the song bursts without warning into fast paced crusty thrash, ending the song in an uproar of grinding Disrupt-esque thrash. The arcane "Spiral Filter Forcing You Down to Black Pyramid" starts with a watery, flanged guitar before dropping into the rhythmically crushing demon-boogie, a sort of swinging doomcrust of putrid snarling vokills, angular Southern sludge riffage and swampy, bloozy soloing that winds its way through the almost the entire song. Later on, it dissipates into pure cosmic whoosh, a long stretch of space noise and swirling black hole fx with just the fading pulse of the drums and bass keeping it from completely drifting into the abyss, then re-emerges as a pounding tribal metal outro at the end. Grisly, human-hating psych sludge.

FLESHPRESS "Rebuild-Crumble" MCD
(Kult of Nihilow)
Something of a concept EP concerned with the act of natural creation and the law of entropy as it applies to the ephemeral state of humankind's achievements, "Rebuild/Crumble" is one of two great Eps that have come out recently from the mighty Fleshpress, those Finnish sludgelords who poison their grueling, grinding slow motion heaviness with a terminally hateful worldview and some interesting psychedelic elements. Clocking in at just under twenty minutes, this two song disc might be on the short side, but it's unrelenting in it's skull-crushing heaviness. "Rebuild" opens with looped backwards sound and airy room hiss, a strange environmental ambience that becomes filled with swells of feedback that converge into a moody post-rock instrumental. Twangy clean guitar ripples over shuffling slow-paced drums, and for a moment, Fleshpress seem to be channeling the brooding slowcore of Codeine. Then, out of nowhere they kick into a lurching crusty assault, snarling sludge that abruptly shifts gears and slows down into even more sluggish depths of heaviness before grinding back into the droning sludge. In response, "Crumble" layers slow pounding toms, mysterious scraping sounds and percussive clanking in an unsettling abstract intro; an ominous guitar melody creeps in, again forming into sinister slowcore, but slowly building into another blast of snarling apocalyptic sludge, and this time when the band peaks into the crushing riffs and thunder of tribal drumming, it has this Amebix / Neurosis-like vibe, all bleakly apocalyptic till they suddenly drop out at the end, with just a dark, ominous piano minor key melody hovering in the blackness. Packaged in a card sleeve with metallic silver printing.

THROAT "Licked Inch Fur" MLP 12€
(Kaos Kontrol/Verdura Records/Made in Kansas/At War with False Noise)
BACK IN STOCK! "Licked Inch Fur" is the latest four-song EP from top-notch Finnish noise rock act Throat, and somehow it's even better than the "Adult Situations" 7" that I wrote about three months ago. I mentioned last time that the band seems to draw frequent comparisons to 16, Unsane, and Fudge Tunnel, but regardless of whether or not I agree with that, I will say that this EP puts Throat right up there with those highly regarded acts in terms of overall quality level. Surging rhythms, plodding basslines, eerie feedback, ringing dissonance, harsh vocals… it's all here in fine form. The songwriting has an unexpectedly dark heaviness to it as well, and that definitely pays off. And it's all wrapped up in an excellent recording that keeps everything sounding warm and natural – giving each element its own breathing room in the mix. Awesome, awesome stuff. There's absolutely no reason why fans of this particular style shouldn't be absolutely flipping out over this band!

FELLWOODS "Wulfram" CD 10€
(At War with False Noise)
Portland, Oregon's Fellwoods give us a slab of bluesey, hard-edged rock with a great vintage 70s sound. Undoubtedly these guys (formerly The Moss) will be lumped in with the current "retro-rock" revival, which includes some great bands, and some questionable bandwagon-jumpers. The major differentiator is the ability to just write a good tune - unconsciously and without pretence - and Fellwoods most definitely do that! It's very stripped-down, direct and raw blues rock which gives a heavy nod to the proto metal of the self-titled Bang LP, the first Sir Lord Baltimore record and even early Judas Priest. The vocals aren't a million miles away from Halford early caterwaul either and fit with the sense of kinetic urgency throughout. There are some fantastic psychedelic spacey passages going on too, reflected in the beautfiful cover art by vocalist/guitarist Adam Burke. Limited edition of 500 copies, comes in standard jewel case.

MARZURAAN "Five Years Worth of Fuck All" CD 10€
(At War with False Noise)
BACK IN STOCK! This collection comprises of demos, live stuff, rarities and rehearsals from the UK's most consistently interesting, forward-thinking, and just plain fucking great band of the last decade. Starting off from now and moving backwards through time to the early bedroom demo days, this CD shows Marzuraan's evolution from simplistic droning minimalism of the two bass lineup to the full-on rock beast of today. The album kicks off with a cover of Loop's "Afterglow", putting it through the post-Ginn blender and coming out with something great. The other cover here is a raging, lo-fi recording of Rollins Band's "Turned Inside Out", performed at the inaugural Glasgow Implodes fest a few years ago. There's a fierce, noise-ridden performance of "Nice Wang" recorded on Julian Cope's last tour, the epic dark drone rock of GMT recorded at the Lord Clyde in Byker, and the aptly-named Kraut-esque monotone riff of "Earth 3" from the confusing Manbyrd cassette. All in all, Marzuraan do it better than anyone else going right now; be it bleak minimal droning walls of sound, controlled experiments into feedback or baws-out "post" rock, without the scene points. They sound like the late, twisted Flag stuff on a mid-period Voivod album, with Swervedriver on in the background. Played by Helios Creed. Or maybe I just talked a load of bollocks, fuck knows! Buy this record, dickhead. Totally great packaging by the guys at Thumbprint Press; three-panel chipboard sleeve, double-sided print, with stark black letterpress and clear varnish.

REDRIGHTHAND "They Sang and Chanted for Hours, then the Locked in Hundreds Set Themselves Ablaze" CD 10€
(At War with False Noise)
Redrighthand played quite a bit in the UK and built up quite a name for themselves over the years, and this record is a perfect distillation of their sound: incredibly slow, interminably heavy and possessing an atmosphere of complete and utter despair that has rarely been matched since. This record is probably one of the best documents of the UK sludge/doom sound and should be held in the same regard as many others who have came and went since. The bands other Redrighthand members were in/went on to be in speaks for itself: vocalist Peet was in Hard to Swallow and Narcosis, Robbo went on to do They Are Cowards, Thomas and Paul were both in Charger and now play in Ocksen, and Paul Rauschen was in Like a Kind of Matador and went on to Gruel. Limited edition of 500 copies, standard jewel case with a "manifesto" insert hidden behind the CD tray.

SOFY MAJOR / MEMBRANE Split LP+CD 12€
(Impure Muzik/Bigoût Records/Ocinatas Industries/Basement Apes Industries/Prototype Records)
This split LP features two of France's best noise rock/hardcore bands. The first band on the album is Sofy Major. Sofy Major is a band from Clermont-Ferrand, France and play a great style of music that incorporates noise rock and hardcore influenced by Neurosis, Unsane, and Botch. At times Sofy Major adds an atmospheric post rock sound that gives the band a powerful, sincere, and urgent sound. Membrane on the other hand take a different approach to their sound and play a style of discordant, noisey, and blown out hardcore, noiserock, and metal. Membrane has been in existence since 2000 and is influenced by bands such as Neurosis, Helmet, Jawbox, Deadguy, and Coalesce. Clear vinyl with white haze in black/white sleeve, also including a CD version of the album. Limited edition of 500 copies.

XNOYBIS / PORD Split 7"
(Ocinatas Industries)
Great split 7" from two French noise rock/hardcore bands. Both bands blast one song of tight, violent noise rock with a definite hardcore feel, comparable to such greats as Deadguy, Botch or Coalesce, not forgetting the likes of Unsane or Neurosis from the noisier end of the spectrum. Black vinyl in black/white sleeve.

PORD "Valparaiso" CD 10€
(Ocinatas Industries/Rejuvenation Records/Prototype Records/Contre Plaqué Records/Gabu Records)
Pord is a three-piece from Lozére, France and "Valparaiso" is their second full-length release. Very typically for a French noise rock band, Pord manages to draw influence from the 90s classics and update them with their own touch. Here you can find the quirkiness of Dazzling Killmen as well as the ever-present violence of Unsane, but similarities to newer bands such as Tantrum and Knut can be drawn as well. Intense, surprising and uncompromising - Pord delivers a nice punch in the gut for any noise rock afficionado. Limited edition of 500 copies comes in a nice fold-out digisleeve.

CIRCLE "Taantumus" CD 10€
(Ektro Records)
"Taantumus" just turned ten years old. Originally released by the Finnish label legend Bad Vugum, the album was born into a tumultuous world. Bad Vugum soon fell under, and after the small CD pressing sold out, "Taantumus" became an instant cult rarity. Finally a remastered CD version has materialised, including a nine-minute bonus track, "Veitsi". Compared to other titles in Circle's oeuvre "Taantumus" is a bit closer to traditional rock music in terms of song structure and length. The album is an astonishingly varied package, full of explosive rock'n'roll moments, minimal caveman-style ambience and metallic epic rumble. A transitional masterpiece and a cornerstone of the band's long career.

CIRCLE "Panic" CD 10€
(Ektro Records)
Another release from Circle, yet again. This time these experimental veterans study both ends of the previously unheard static / hyper-active scale. Soundwise they have clearly proceeded to the 21st century, jumping from limpid synthesizer soundscapes to wall-smashing "speed-kraut" bursts. The triptych construction of the album along with the cover art that portrays war and street riots raise various associations on the history and the current state of Western civilization.

PIGS "You Ruin Everything" LP 13€

When Unsane bassist Dave Curran started writing songs on guitar with drummer Jim Paradise (Player's Club, Freshkills, Hellno) the name they tossed out for their fledgling project was simple: Pigs. "We figured it was short enough that press and promoters couldn't fuck it up." Producer Andrew Schneider (Slughog, Barbaro) was invited to fill-in on bass for a couple of shows and, much to their delight, has refused to leave. The sound? Pigs sound like the last forty-five minutes of that interminable haul from Portland to San Francisco when both patience and air conditioning are long gone; like a petty, early-morning drunken argument in a gravel parking lot about the stupid, impossible math of how to divide forty-one dollars three ways; like when the left rear bearing on the van that's been squealing and then grinding for days finally gets hot enough to weld itself into the axle and the ancient Detroit Deathtrap grates to a final, shuddering halt. Pigs sound like three guys who have played countless shows in many bands for a couple of decades in several dozen countries and still can't leave it alone. Black vinyl in full colour sleeve, limited to 300 copies.

UNEARTHLY TRANCE "V" Tape
(Witch Sermon)
Unearthly Trance summons forth "V"; an electric, urban funeral drone and their most epic full-length to date. With "V" the trio has come full circle - combining the expansive leanings of "Electrocution" and "The Trident" with the sparing, brooding doom of their earliest works. Unearthly Trance's unwavering dedication to their principles and craft has yielded some of America's best metal with "V". This is the tape version licensed from Relapse Records. PIGEON HUNT "s/t" 10" 10€
(Spelling Trouble)
Excellent new Finnish band featuring old dogs who have done time in several Finnish punk/hardcore greats over the years. This is the vinyl version of the sold out tape released on Brown Records a while ago. Dissonant and raging hardcore meets noise rock with a bad attitude. Heavy rhythmical foundation topped with quirky guitar riffs and demented vocals. Definitely a record worth checking out! Limited edition of 300 copies with 100 copies on clear vinyl (available from Kaos Kontrol).

SOKEA PISTE "Ajatus karkaa" MLP 11€
(Karkia Mistika/Mouse/Trujaca Fala)
Sokea Piste may be a newcomer in the Finnish punk/noise rock/underground/whatever scene, but it's members are no greenhorns when it comes to creating noisy, crusty and uncompromising soundscapes. As the cover art already reveals, this 20 minutes of paranoid desolace delves into the darker sides of the human mind. It's not too often you stumble across an album this concentrated on the inside of the mind. Surely many punks have been shouting out their anger to the world for many years, but "Ajatus karkaa" wants to find out the problems and the solutions from the inside. Naturally those problems are caused by the outside world, which – according to the manic shouting of Heikki – is going towards a dead end. It's a world in a peculiarly grotesque state, where both the economy and the breadlines are growing. No wonder your mind starts to tear itself apart. Album contains lyrics translated to english for easier follow up. "Ajatus karkaa" is an excellent follow up to the chaotic paranoia of the "Oire" 7” EP, released in 2011 by Peterwalkee Records. Albeit being most certainly related to more or less punkish roots, the bizarre charm in the band's performance is it's mesmerizing originality. You can't really pogo to this along with the hardcore punks, yet the complexity of Seppo's bass and Jukka's drum lines are still far away from the jazzyness of acts like NoMeansNo. Maybe if The Jesus Lizard would've tuned their guitars like Thurston Moore and added some cocktails of mental medicine, the cool melancholia of the Finnish personality and... Motörhead? Hard to tell, go find out for yourself. You may remember some of its members from the hc-punk collective Kyklooppien Sukupuutto or the no wave of Finnish folk music behemoth Kuollut Muisto. And just like these names, also Sokea Piste leaves no "blind spots" (as their name says) in their debut album, when it let's their thoughts run away (as the album title says) in the dark abyss of loud guitar walls by Heikki and Juhana and sometimes even gothic or industrial tones. Chilly, cruel, chaotic, crusty. But oh so cathartic! This is the 2nd pressing on black vinyl and different colour artwork.

AMEN RA "Mass III" 2LP 18€
(Music Fear Satan)
This is the third press of the debut album by this Belgian band. Amen Ra just joined Neurot Recordings for their third album ("Mass V" scheduled for 2012). This first record really defines the Amen Ra sound: a mix between dark post-metal and rough sludge with screamy and oppressive vocals. Like the previous press on Sound Devastation, this one includes the four tracks from "Mass III" and two bonus tracks which initially appeared on "Mass II" ("From Birth to Grave, from Shadow to Light" and "Ritual"). This gatefold double-LP is limited to 1000 copies, 300 on dark green and 700 on black (available from Kaos Kontrol).

KONGH "Counting Heartbeats" 2LP 18€
(Music Fear Satan)
Majestically heavy. Mammoth-sized riffs, huge pounding drums and thunderous bass lines. Dynamically blending ultra low crushing doom vibes with brighter and more atmospheric soundscapes, "Counting Heartbeats" is a versatile, yet uniform experience. The debut album from Sweden's new doom/sludge masters Kongh, is nothing less than a display of the ultimate heaviness. This is a repress of the vinyl originally released on Trust No One Recordings. The double-LP gatefold sleeve was designed by Seldon Hunt and the record is limited to 1000 copies (150 on clear, 150 on pink and white swirl and 700 on black (available from Kaos Kontrol)).

KONGH "Shadows of the Shapeless" 2LP 18€
(Music Fear Satan)
The Swedish trio Kongh return with the follow-up to their critically acclaimed 2007 debut album "Counting Heartbeats" which established the band as a force to be reckoned with. On "Shadows of the Shapeless", the band has taken their dynamic and riff-driven thunderstorm a huge step forward, and the album will surely place Kongh at the very forefront of the European sludge/doom/metal scene. This is a repress on black vinyl.

GHÄST / ABANDONER Split CD 8€ (SALE!)
(At War with False Noise/Choking Hazard Records)
Two tracks each from bands coming at dark heaviness from different ends of the spectrum, but who compliment each other perfectly. The two Ghäst tracks are painfully slow, heavy and unrelentingly repetitive funeral dirges of ultradoom. There are some definite sludge ovetones going on there but this is definitely for fans of bleak doom/sludge: think Moss/Burning Witch/Corrupted etc. Abandoner is Jay and Ryan from Unearthly Trance but this is a different proposition altogether: post-indutrial soundscapes, this is almost like an alternative soundtrack to Eraserhead. Drenched in feedback, almost lost vocals, buzzing, processed guitar all come together in a massive, dark, almost symphonic whole. Total void music. Limited edition of 500 copies.

SLOTH "A Whole Other World of Fun a.k.a. 13 Songs 13 Samples" CD 8€ (SALE!)
(At War with False Noise)
Ohio's Sloth have been creating some of the most fucked up, weird, funny music of the past 10+ years and this is their first ever CD full-length album! Known for split records with bands such as Corrupted, Grief, Floor, Upsidedown Cross, Noothgrush etc... etc..., this album sees Sloth in a much more musically diverse frame of mind than usual. The painful sludge noise is still there but there's an altogether more considered approach. There's piano on it for fuck's sake. Weird lo-fi songs that sound like they were written by a fucked up kid happily mixing garage rock high end jams and tar pit slo-mo doom dirges. The "13 samples" are bang on and the humour is as bizarre and hilarious as ever. Full colour 4 page booklet, drawn by artist-in-chief Uberneecie and coloured in by a group of five year olds from Glasgow.

A BUTCHER'S WALTZ Compilation LP 15€
(Learning Curve Records)
Opening things up on the a-side of A Butcher's Waltz is the collective known as Seawhores. The band put out a one-sided 12" on Amphetamine Reptile just last year. The songs "Our Embassy" and "The Cleaning Lady" are steamrollers of vaguely groove oriented noise-rock. And of course, they manage to throw in a bit of the spontaneity that has become sort of a signature to what they do with a track like "The Architect" that sounds more like Freddy Votel's other project Skoal Kodiak here. Good set of tunes! Filling up the rest of the main side is Power Take Off, which is the project of former Grids member and Made in Kansas head honcho Gus Engstrom. The track "Plow Share" is the lone helping here from the band, however it happens to span a lofty 10 minutes. If you’ve ever had the pleasure of hearing one of Rusted Shut’s lengthier noise excursions on any of their records, then you already have an excellent idea of what Power Take Off sound like. The track leaps into a slow distortion heavy trudge that rolls along for a good portion of the track, really only taking a very small break somewhere in the middle of the song for what assumably is a sample of an auctioneer at a cattle auction. Ah, the Midwest. This isn’t as hateful/miserable as Rusted Shut, but certainly has the same crunch to succeed in the same type of way. On the b-side is Skoal Kodiak leading the way with two songs that certainly fit the bill for this project of mutated noise and dub heavy beats. They are fresh off a solid record that was just released on Load Records, and it’s safe to say that those of you out there enjoyed that, then these tracks will likely be of interest. Often sounding like every part of every appliance you own circling the drain, Skoal Kodiak skillfully sketch together funk laced beats and the swirling noise to present something that often truly sounds otherworldly. It’s no secret that Minneapolis has been a breeding ground for this type of experimentation over the years, and with Votel’s time in both the Cows and Seawhores, this almost seems natural. Almost. The pairing of Skoal Kodiak and Gay Witch Abortion on the b-side was a good idea, as they both tend to explore an uncomfortable mutoid type of rock and give this record somewhat of a tale of two sides feel. Gay Witch Abortion kind of sit closer to something like Lightning Bolt, with a rather significant focus on percussion. They have six songs on the LP, and as you may have guessed, they are quite short in length. The briefness of it all almost makes it sound like the entire thing runs together for one longer bi-polar track, which actually kind of works in their favor. Limited edition of 500 copies of which 300 copies are on black vinyl (available from Kaos Kontrol).

CROWN ROAST "A Nose Has Many Jobs" LP 15€
(Unclean Records)
Criminally underrated U.S. noise rock gem from 1994! Great first album by this Austin, Texas trio who carry on the legacy of angst created by such heavies as Butthole Surfers and Scratch Acid. 11 songs of soaring, heroic noise that's an exercise in alternate guitar tunings and multiple-time signature changes. Features the blockbuster single, "Warthole," which became a favorite of UK DJ John Peel. Craig Clouse (ex-Hammerhead, later TODD and Shit and Shine) on bass. Black vinyl.

WHEN DINOSAURS RULED THE EARTH "Jeans Shopping with Jesse" LP 15€
(Made in Kansas)
The title "Jeans Shopping with Jesse" might lead you thinking about some hipster-types competing on who can fit in the smallest girly jeans, but rest assured, the scuzzed-out racket delivered by Austin, Texas' When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth will have those guys filling their tight pants with the stuff us normal folks use the toilet for. Six tracks that defy categories, ranging from jangly noise rock riffs to all-out noise blasts (featuring Shit and Shine as guests making sure all frequencies remain on red) and the almost psychedelic jamming on the closing track, "Jah Fingies". Sure as hell not a record for everyone, but for those enjoying a little sonic manhandling from time to time, this is worth checking out! Black vinyl in rough hand screened sleeves with full colour insert. Limited edition of 100 copies.

SHINY BEAST "Stop Looking at Us... We're Waving Goodbye" CD 8€ (SALE!)
(Little Mafia Records)
Shiny Beast - imagine a mix between "Killing Technology" -era Voivod and The Jesus Lizard with Germbox and Drive Like Jehu and mathier Black Flag/Greg Ginn, you get the idea! Finally, after almost 6 years of waiting, they have a reissue compilation filled with unreleased tracks etc., all in all 37 tracks long! The release collects a good majority of Shiny Beast's recordings that contains their first single for Boner Records, their side of the split they did with fellow North Carolina group Regraped on Blast-O-Platter, a complete set of their last live show, and a number of compilation tracks. It’s a fantastic release for those that had some interest in the band or are just big fans of the past Chapel Hill scene. This is a good snapshot of one of the more outliers from that era, splitting off and taking a noisier/mathy sounding path than you'd be likely to find from the large group of bands that made a name for themselves in the same scene. The guitarist David Sullivan is in the Relapse Records band Red Fang now. The sleeve includes liner notes from all three main members of Shiny Beast along with recording information etc.

Workin' Man Noise Unit is a noisy rock band from Reading, U.K. in the spirit of Drunks With Guns, Killdozer, or really just about anything AmRep related in the earlier days. Six songs in total here that lays on looping feedback for pretty much every track that gives it the feel of a psych-rock record gone terribly, terribly awry. DEAD IN THE WATER "In the End of Hope" CD 8€ (SALE!)
(Dead in the Water)
The second full-length by Dead in the Water, the Finnish sludge/post-hardcore outfit who tend to take their time with releasing new material. "In the End of Hope" presents four colossal tracks moving somewhere between the Neurosis -style apocalyptic sludge and more delicate, almost shoegaze-y atmospheric moments. The usual "rock band" elements have been spiced up with string arrangements as well as female vocals, helping to create Dead in the Water's most accomplished work to date. Digisleeve.

MR. PETER HAYDEN "Faster than Speed (or Violating Special Relativity)" CD 8€ (SALE!)
(Winter Records/Post-RBMM)
In the album notes for Mr. Peter Hayden's "Faster than Speed" album it states "The songs deal with time" and time is exactly what you need to fully appreciate the spacious, lush sounds that are projected over two tracks that both have playing times of over 30 minutes each. Using sounds created by guitars, bass, drums, percussion and finished with synthesizers, piano, wind instruments and various acoustic elements. The soundscapes here are very cinematic as styles from doom metal, drone, psychedelia, space rock to experimental prog-rock are interwoven into an endless stream of ambient, flowing hypnotic music. It's pure music made for meditative listening as there is no catchy hooks, no riffs to make you grab your air-guitar and while it has certain melodic segments, the emphasis is on slow-building atmospherics. Stylish fold-out sleeve.

Able and free, Mr. Peter Hayden, a five-piece from northern Satakunta, Finland, bring you their time-cultivating improvisations and visionary metaphysics with an ever-changing approach towards presentation and incomparable knowledge of the future. This space-age travelogue of a drug-lazed time-trip will be all you need to feel. Voyage to fringe of freedom and mental stability, lesson in self-medication, guide to overcome this plane of existence, a trip to live through to be whole once again. Stylish fold-out sleeve.

AUTHOR & PUNISHER "Drone Machines" CD 8€ (SALE!)
(Heart & Crossbone Records)
By squelching, triggering, amputating, stretching and tormenting sounds achieved from the execution of heavy machinery into vivid instruments, Tristan Shone, the man behind Author & Punisher, offers "Drone Machines", one of the most eviscerated and innovating albums to come out in years. Nonetheless, "Drone Machines" is beyond avantgarde, in that exciting sense that it brings together slow-paced doom whips, modern technology, an eerie flood of vile drones and heavy machinery in a whole new perspective. It's also an album that is reviving the industrial metal genre from its ashes and rephrasing the primeval passion for that classic bestial drum pound with rancid low end and sonic-metallic scraping - and this unblemished contrast - between concrete innovation and the reinvigoration of lost sounds, is exactly what makes "Drone Machines" such an important, groundbreaking and iconic album. For years to come. Recommended if you like Godflesh, HALO, Swans, Human Queena Orchestra, Dead World, Grave in the Sky, Khanate, Black Mayonnaise, Caspar Brötzmann Massaker, Trust Obey etc.

MONE¥I$GOD "M.A.R.K.Z" CD 8€ (SALE!)
(Heart & Crossbone Records)
Japan's best kept secret are back with a new album! Fronted by Kan of the legendary 80's punk-thrash act The Asbestos, MONE¥I$GOD has been flooding the Japanese underground scene with sheer originality for over a decade by practicing their perpetual belligerence and inimitable crossover between virulent sludge-doom, grim noise rock and endless post punk latitudes. "M.A.R.K.Z" kicks off with the tribal pummeling of "Cancer" and continues with the supposedly friendly "Murasaki", but it's only a devious act of diversion before "Black Rainbow" smoothly barge in with a caustic ska rhythm section, super-thick bassline, and above all, Kans' matchless gargling vocals that rumble throughout the entire album like a decisive instigator. "Waltz" lashes right after as a scorching crescendo with its perforating and frantic gradual guitar parts and functions as a great build up for the epic "Hate Song" - a panegyric-like wayward track of unblemished loathing for humanity. The doom-dubbed remix for "Black Rainbow" by Balata (David OPP & Finkelstein of Lietterschpich fame) is the final aggressor that perfectly ends this veritable album of gashed hymns and surged audacities. Recommended if you like Killing Joke, Zeni Geva, LEWD, Pailhead, Arab on Radar, Christpunchers, Six Finger Satellite, The EX, Nomeansno etc.

SUPERBUGGER "AKU" CD 8€ (SALE!)

New Zealanders Antony Milton (Mrtyu/Glory Fckn Sun) and James Kirk (Black Boned Angel/Sandoz Lab Technicians) are back with a mighty newborn noisy rumble - a renewed gospel debauchery of massive psychedelic chunk! And a savage chunk it is! "AKU" is a sordid and relentless swirl of blunted in-the-red lo-fi noise, subhuman rock'n'roll structured decomposition and marbled psychedelia splendor solipsism, reminiscent of the seminal recordings made by Les Rallizes Denudes, Mainliner and Skullflower blended with the New Zealand natural and almighty trademark of savant-guitar-noise, from The Skeptics to The Dead C to Wolfskull that result in a splendid colossal noise coming down from the sky while shouting at the ground.

THEME "Valentine (Lost) Forever" CD 8€ (SALE!)
(Heart & Crossbone Records)
The third album from Theme, a band comprised of Stuart Carter, Jeanne Boyer and Richard Johnson (from '90s influential industrial-experimental band Splintered and head of the Lumberton Trading Company label), is a hallucinogenic intersection, where the exploration of twilight spaces, dreams, bitter reflections and hopes collide with a sense of escape (to better places?) or an abandoned 'self', either lost or searching for much needed identity. More 'song'-based than their previous album, on "Valentine (Lost) Forever" Theme often witnesses barbed yet oblique words cut-up and formed into mantras over a mesh of cascading drones, textures, blissed-out guitar strums, submerged tamboura, metallic sheets of electronic frah, occasional drum pounds and chilling swells 'n' flecks of musique concrete. Overall, it catches the group exploring their environment, in more senses than one, with renewed vigour and nothing but questions left either open-ended or vying for interpretation. It's a world of rubble, dust and sprawling collapse, psychological or otherwise, screaming for meaning and purpose in a world gone mad where inner conflicts, vulnerability and regret are drowned in vast existential pools... With an additional remix by ex-Siouxsie & the Banshees bass player Steven Severin, this genuine album offers an apocalyptic sound mirage that recalls the experimental and post industrial works of Zoviet*France, Throbbing Gristle and Coil, as well as the occult-like numbness of Current 93, the bleak avant-electronica of Andrew Liles and the psychedelic drones furrowed by the group's own previous work in both Splintered and Theme. In that sense, "Valentine (Lost) Forever" is a definite masterpiece in the ever-evolving legacy of the U.K. industrial scene, and if this is the end, then it's time to burn the truth.

CHESTBURSTER "Secret Sex Tape" Tape
(Chestburster)
This Finnish three-piece has been active for some years now and "Secret Sex Tape" is the latest addition to their back catalogue of small scale releases. Stoner rock would probably be the easiest category to file Chestburster in, but the amount of energy and filth in their sound is much closer to The Stooges or even Boris on the original "Heavy Rocks" album than some second-rate desert rock copycats. On top of the 6 songs Chestburster have also included a cover version of Decadence's "Slam", best known from the This is Boston, Not L.A. compilation. Save for the kittycat on the front cover, there's nothing pretty about this tape, just dirty and pissed off rock'n'roll. If you can't handle it, you probably should check that you still have a pair of balls in your pants. Pro-duplicated orange tapes in full colour sleeves with insert. Limited edition of 100 copies.

FISTULA "Goat" CD
(Crucial Blast)
Ohio is rotting. Fistula once again team up with Crucial Blast to deliver another heavy dose of their septic, filthy, lumbering death-sludge in the form of "Goat", a five-song Ep of low-fi and low-end nihilistic filth and rabies-laced caveman thrash with songs based on the ghoulish discovery and subsequent investigation of the eleven decomposing bodies found in the Cleveland home of Anthony Sowell in the Autumn of 2009. This new disc delivers more of the pulverizing, slime-covered sludge and primitive death metal rot that these buckeye barbarians have been carving out in the back of Medina garages over the past ten years, continuing to follow in the coagulated blood tracks of Celtic Frost, Autopsy and Winter, but filtered through Fistula's uniquely mangled and inebriated scum-haze and utterly negatory worldview. Digipak.

GEISHA "Die Verbrechen der Liebe" CD 10€
(Crucial Blast)
This hour-long, six track monolith follows Geisha into a psychedelic black storm, their blown-out and raw rock infused with a bone-rattling recording and covered in a thick sheen of white noise and gritty distortion. As with their previous album, the spirit of seminal noise rock / sludge rock (think Cherubs, Melvins, My Bloody Valentine's "Isn't Anything" for coordinates) is combined with violent, chaotic noise and tainted with blurred VHS cassette visions and vague allusions to BDSM, and then jammed through an orgone accumulator, forming a ferocious, crushing rock beast that reveals it's powerful hooks and melodies underneath the churning distorted bass rumble and sludge metal riffage, blasts of psychedelic drone-noise and corrosive skree, percussive pummel, and deranged singing. The sound is immense, and the first five tracks on "Die Verbrechen der Liebe" deliver Geisha's in-the-red heaviness and hooks in surplus. "Prelude to Amber Pays the Rent", "A Wilderness, Except by Sight", "Sportsfister" - every one is a crusher. But then Geisha pull out the monstrous thirty-minute, thirty-five second closer "Theme from Diana", and the tone changes completely. This track is a re-working of a "metal percussion" set that Geisha originally performed live several years ago, and it begins as a slowly building fog of voices and effects and shimmering metal that blooms into an expanse of droning, fx-heavy guitar, looping samples, cosmic effects, and improvised percussion. It's a kind of rumbling industrial dronescape that stretches out forever, until suddenly in the last few minutes the drifting drones and psychedelic guitars and sampled voices suddenly explode in an immolating nuclear blast of overdriven, speaker-annhilating noise and the track immediately, terrifyingly changes shape into a monstrous lumbering noise-metal dirge that bulldozes out of your speakers, whooshing Hawkwind effects swooping overhead, the band knotted together into a white-hot blast of ultra heavy riffage, distortion, and a wall of percussive force. "Diana" is one of the most crushing pieces of music ever heard from Geisha, like some majestic and brutal conglom of Swans, Skullflower, Merzbow, and Burmese forged into a destructive space-metal supernova. The CD comes in a limited edition of 1000 copies, packaged in a full-color gatefold jacket.

TREES "Freed of This Flesh" CD 10€
(Crucial Blast)
The mysterious Portland ensemble Trees return with their second offering on Crucial Blast, "Freed of This Flesh", with two new fetid death rituals scraped from the crypt. Each of these tracks averages around fourteen minutes, an extended death-rattle formed from black glacial riffs suspended in space, tectonic percussive rumbles, anguished shrieks of torment and abject suffering, deep guttural demon-toad throat singing, and endless sheets of glistening metallic feedback that spill and drift to the far edges of their extreme time-stretched ambient doom, a crumbling, blighted majesty, noxious ambient blackdoom adrift on putrescent tides. The wretched vocal effluvium creeps formlessly across austere slabs of crushing heaviness arranged into ghoulish constructs of atmospheric dread, moving so slow that the music seems to lose all sense of propulsion at times, becoming lost in a fog of howling amplifiers and buzzing feedback, the guitars stretched into massive decomposing drones, the spaces between infested with controlled bursts of drums that skitter and rumble, almost "jazzy" in a vague sort of way, but still incredibly slow and ponderous. "Freed of This Flesh" inhabits the same sort of black-tar depths as the likes of Burning Witch, Monarch, Khanate, and Bunkur while stripping the slo-mo heaviness into their own twisted, skeletal configuration. Digipak.

WOLVSERPENT "Gathering Strengths / Blood Seed" 2CD 12€
(Crucial Blast)
Previously known as Pussygutt, the duo of blackened psychedelic dronemetallers from Boise, Idaho changed their name to the much more ominous sounding Wolvserpent in 2010. The name is the really the only thing that changed, as the occult hypno-doom and grim, folk-stained nightmares that populated their previous albums are all intact here. This double disc collects both the "Gathering Strengths" LP and "Blood Seed" LP, both of which were previously available only on limited edition vinyl. The material has been remastered for this format, and comes in an eight-panel digipack that features both the original album artwork as well as new imagery that further compliments Wolvserpent's avant-garde witch-sludge. Originally released under the name Pussygutt, "Gathering Strengths" offers more of their signature blackened dronescapes and ominous metallic ambience that we heard on the amazing albums "She Hid Behind Her Veil" and "Sea of Sand", with two massive tracks, each one a mysterious and abstract slab of twilight drift and formless low-end blackness. The beginning of "Gathering Strengths (Silence Within)" is a spacious blend of abstract doomdrift and eerie nocturnal field recordings, the chirping of crickets and other nighttime forest sounds surrounding the slow deep wheeze of a clarinet drifting through the woodland shadows, the tones of the clarinet stretching and winding into tendrils of dark drone, a subtle undercurrent of rumbling heaviness deep beneath all of this. As the track continues to unfold, clinking metal and the whir of prayer bowls and distant tolling bells drift in, along with what sounds like a detuned banjo, muted strings, blurred streaks of violin, the sound smoldering for quite awhile, a sort of cinematic chamber-doomdrift, looped and scraped strings becoming more intense, joined by a gorgeous violin melody that begins weeping over the dark diaphanous ambience. And then the calm is split apart as a billowing black fog of metallic heaviness rumbles across the landscape, crawling over the horizon, seething and roiling just behind the mournful violins and creaking, whirring drones. The second begins with black wavering buzz floats across the simple pound of hand drums and a slowly beaten tambourine that begins "Gathering Strengths (Spirit Walker)", slowly joined by violins playing a simple keening melody, the mood bleak and sorrowful, with buzzing cello-drones slowly swarming beneath. The sound gradually builds into waves of rumbling doom riffage hovering over the horizon, never becoming overly heavy, instead spreading out and forming into a hazy doomfolk ritual with hypnotic violin melody and deep strings and soundtracky synths, becoming a dreamy funeral processional, dark and beautiful, austere and apocalyptic. The band's fourth album "Blood Seed" was released as a limited vinyl edition in 2010 on 20 Buck Spin. The first half is mostly made up of swirling nocturnal folk-drone, the second shifting into fractured, crushing heaviness. The first side is titled "Wolv" and starts off with the soft warm blur of a synthesizer drifting through a black expanse, very dark, dreamy, and cosmic, slowly joined by the sound of a violin playing a melancholy minor key melody that drifts over the soft swirling hum of the keys. Right from the beginning, the sound is dramatic and moving, and heavy with a feeling of loss and grief. This feeling is amplified as more layers of violin are gradually added, the strings sometimes falling away into pure drone. After a few minutes of this, the guitar finally appears, playing a slow creepy figure plucked in slow motion, and combined with the violin and keys creates something resembling atmospheric, funereal chamber music. Bits of slide guitar are draped over top, and it almost sounds like an extremely depressed and despondent Amber Asylum. About halfway through the side, the drums suddenly kick in and the guitar swells up in a rush of heavy distortion, and the duo lurches into this massive heaving sludge riff, all pounding slow mo drums and down tuned metallic crush, the grinding riff and pounding ultra heavy pace reminiscent of the Melvins, but with the violins and keys continuing to swirl around, transforming the heaviness into some kind of mysterious folk-doom ritual. Up to this point it's been more or less instrumental, but now the howling unintelligible shrieks begin to appear, the sound of demonically possessed throats screaming in the midst of a monstrous doom jam taking place in the middle of the woods at midnight, a single riff grinding over and over, backed by a legion of classical violins, layered and intricate yet totally trance inducing. More effects start to appear, as well as strange echoing noises and droning guitar notes, the violins taking off on haunting counter-melodies, the sound becoming incredibly huge as the side approaches the end of the first side, until the drums fall away and the guitar dissipates into a cloud of dense feedback fug and it winds down into those witchy violins and clouds of amp buzz. The "Serpent" side picks up from there, with soft wisps of violin licking at the edges of a buzzing guitar leaning against an amplifier, gushing black feedback. Then we hear the distant howling of wolves, their cries actually forming into a sort of melody that merges with the other elements, the strings diffusing into a soft circling melody over that rumbling guitar hum. After a few minutes, all of this fades out once more and a creeping, muted guitar appears, playing a menacing Sabbathoid riff for a moment before the full band drops in again, grinding out another massive sludgy metallic dirge, wolf howls reappearing behind the pummeling slow mo metal. The chorus of strange nocturnal cries is joined by other yelps, moans, echoing shrieks, and chanting voices, evoking images of a midnight garage doom jam performed by a coven of witches, the sludgy riffing and heavy drumming speeding up into a pounding groove and slowing back down into pure tar-pit sloth, a serpentine gothic sludgefeast that stretches out to the very end of the album.

WRECK OF THE HESPERUS "Terminal Eulogy" Tape
(Fort Evil Fruit)
Wreck of the Hesperus slithered into miserable existence in Ireland in 2004, with the intention of expressing the filthy weirdness of Autopsy through the pure doom of Reverend Bizarre. This uncivil union of influences is evident on their first two, long-unavailable demos, compiled here: "Terminal Dirge" (2004) and "Eulogy for the Sewer Dwellers" (2005). Though displaying a slightly more conventional doom sound than more recent releases, the band is shown arriving fully (de)formed, with intelligent composition and experimentation always at the service of unrelenting grimness. This is the beginning of the band's progressive decent into hitherto unexplored depths of abjection and despair, leading to the mutations heard on the acclaimed full lengths, "The Sunken Threshold" (2006) and "Light Rotting Out" (2011). Over an hour of sonic misery with appropriately squalid new artwork from frontwretch AC Rottt (with a larger version on a separate insert) and a download code for the false. Wimps and posers will not be asked to leave the hall. There is no hall. Merely a vast, viscous, oily black pool, rank with the putrefied insanity of a thousand generations. Escape is impossible. Limited and numbered edition of 100 copies.

GRACE / TIDE OF IRON "The Hard Work E.P." 7"
(SuperFi Records/Shy Bairns/Tombs in the Valley Records)
Grace are a band made up of former members of Jinn, who were a pretty scary band to watch back in the day, they've slowed down for Grace, but are no less intimidating. With roared, raw vocals and a more epic feel than their hardcore past would suggest, this almost sounds like sadly-gone scene gods Taint gone aggro. This is a good thing, their two tracks are over too fast. The second one literally, it stands at a rippling 90 seconds, amazing. Unhinged metallic hardcore for fans of Coalesce and Deadguy. Tide of Iron are a bit more chaotic, but no less of a intimidating prospect, their Amphetamine Reptile-esque scratchy guitar sound and rough as hell vocals give the impression of a band more at home in a dusty pub back room than anywhere else and that's how we like it. No pretention, just tunes to forget your mind to. The song titles seem to reflect this view, talking of condiments and dirty protests. Compared to such greats as Big'n, Cherubs and Helmet, you can't go wrong with Tide of Iron! Black vinyl in black/white sleeve with obi-strip and a bunch of stickers.

CHEST "Cursed to Live" 12" 10€
(Chest)
Chest storm their way into the Finnish sludge/doom scene with the ballsy move of self releasing their vinyl debut hot on the heels of their 2011 demo. Luckily there's no sign of haste here as the two tracks, "Cursed to Live" and "Burn Again" present an accomplished sound and carefully structured material. The riffage weighs a ton with the occasional bleak melody creeping in to keep things moving, the pace ranging from Grief -like crawl to High on Fire styled stampede. Chest obviously come from the more metallic school of sludge/doom, keeping their shit tight yet retaining enough dirt in their sound to please the more nihilistic and primitive fancies. Black vinyl in stylish sleeve with lyrics insert and mp3 download card. Limited edition of 500 copies.

NOOTHGRUSH "s/t" LP 12€
(Fuck Yoga)
Crusty torturous doom, truly refined in it's execution. Unlike the later releases that defined the sludge genre, this album is leaning more towards the psychedelic side with clean, depressing vocals in symbiosis with noise and moog synths - existing on the territory between Winter and Hawkwind. Noothgrush recorded these songs shortly after the band was conceived in 1994 and were released only as a short run cassette. None of them appear on any other release except a rearranged version of one song. The cover artwork is envisioned and materialized courtesy of Jason Barnett. Black vinyl. Secong pressing on vinyl limited to 500 copies.

NOOTHGRUSH / SUPPRESSION Split 5"
(Fuck Yoga/Blow the Reactors)
After 14 years of delay, the split single between Noothgrush and Suppression is finally out! Noothgrush have managed to compress an elaborate piece of doom on their side; trademark crushing crusty riffing complemented by caveman drums, heavy bass and narration fueled by disgust making for one sick, sick song. Suppression open the flip side with a mental power electronics section leading to a grinding hardcore tune, heavy on the freak sauce. Sludge, noise and brutal hardcore - this split is a time travel trip to the mid-90's mutant underground as presented by two of it's most prominent units. Black vinyl. Limited edition.

RAT AT RAT R "Amer$ide, Rock & Roll is Dead, Long Live Rat at Rat R" CD 10€
(Ektro Records)
Noise rock quartet Rat at Rat R was formed in 1981 by guitarist Victor Poison-tete. Originally hailing from Philadelphia, the band soon relocated to New York City's Lower East Side and became one of the highlights of the NYC noise rock scene. With Sonic Youth, Live Skull and Swans among their contemporaries, the music of Rat at Rat R can best be described as no wave guitar-oriented noise music. In response Ektro Records proudly announces the 27th anniversary re-mastered re-issue of the groundbreaking recording, "Amer$ide, Rock & Roll is Dead, Long Live Rat at Rat R" including the songs "Plague", "Asshole", "Assassin" and seven other brutal tunes, chock full of political overtones and playful sonic chaos, it still continues to resonate in these tumultuous times.

SHAVED WOMEN "s/t" CD 10€
(Ektro Records)
From the barren streets of middle-America come Shaved Women. Reigning as the supreme harbingers of chaos in Saint Louis, Missouri, this nihilistic quartet has risen to the top through an effective mix of brutal noise rock and self-destructive hardcore punk. Informed by the caustic nature of small city-towns, the band focuses its feedback-drenched dirge into a cross-section of existential anxiety and landlocked depression. With the ability to simultaneously smolder and combust, Shaved Women seamlessly blend the warring guitar riffs of Black Flag, the rabid mania of The Jesus Lizard, and Drunks With Guns’ reckless abandon. Singer Ben Salyers’ animalistic vocal approach barrels in the red with self-loathing rage over guitarist Chris Eck’s grinding walls of feedback. Referencing the buzz-saw warp of Black Flag’s Greg Ginn, Eck weaves through a maze of discordant riffs while maintaining total control of the band’s uncompromising progression. Anchored by the dialed-in rhythm section of bassist John Birkner and drummer Tom Valli, the band easily transitions from erratic breakneck speeds to a headstomping trench crawl with metronomic vitality. The band’s unmatched tenacity results in a bevy of AmRep-style breakdowns hinged on unforgettable mid-tempo hooks and complete brainwave annihilation. Lyrically, Salyers lends to the downer nature of the band as he wades through a sea of mediocrity and complacency with songs like “Choices” and “Every Day Life”. On “Circles,” Salyers barks, “It starts again! It starts again!” as he asserts the pain of mundane existence and the depravity of routine life. Too lazy for suicide. Too apathetic to change. Straying away from the typical “blown-out” sounds of their contemporaries, Shaved Women’s self-titled record offers a balanced focus on the band’s defiant sound and innovative songwriting. Wielding a domineering death rattle, Shaved Women’s volatile brand of corrosive hardcore continues to bridge the gap between acid punks and hardcore weirdos. Fear. Anxiety. Depression. Isolation has never been so real. The CD reissue of Shaved Women's debut album also includes the rare "Live @ APOP" tape material as bonus.

DEATH TO PIGS "Live at Karachi" LP+CD 12€
(213 Records)
Death to Pigs have been mucking about France for some time now, releasing a couple of albums and a handful of other EPs and singles, all of which have gone to represent the seedier underbelly of their surroundings in a rather fantastic way. Their third album, titled "Live at Karachi", is actually not a live album at all. Nope, this is thirteen studio tracks and shows a band that has made a particularly noticeable shift from the straight forward grind and pound of Jesus Lizard-ey noise rock to a greater challenging brand of post-punk/no-wave influenced noise rock at times, maybe more so towards the punk side of things than anything else. Occasionally the band chooses to incorporate some dub elements into their sound, sort of in the same way that fellow creepers Balaclavas have managed to do over their past couple albums so successfully. While not quite the same, there are still a few similarities to be found between the two for sure, embracing many of the same fixtures amongst the past post-punk/no-wave set. It’s evident however that Death to Pigs haven’t fully committed to that era of expansive skronk, but are certainly heading in that direction. The tracks that do choose to blend those sharp tones with the ounces of sax and beats seem to greatly excel on "Live on Karachi" as opposed to some of the more head on punkers scattered about. Whether or not the welcoming of a new guitarist has contributed to the bands push towards this, it’s certainly a move that didn’t detract in any shape or form. Real solid sleazeball shit here, as France has been greatly delivering for awhile now. Black vinyl in full colour sleeve with xeroxed insert and CD version of the album. Limited edition of 300 copies.

HAWKS "Barnburner" LP 15€
(Army of Bad Luck Records)
Rising out of the cacophony come Hawks, Atlanta's newest and most distrubing rock quartet. Their debut "Barnburner" showcases ten tracks of booze fueled noise that has been described as a "sleazy orchestra" of "ungodly racket." Empty bottles clanging, spare change rattling, antique brass bellowing from beneath the clamor - all of this swirling together into an amalgam of tonal chaos. Guitarist Andrew Wiggins screeches and whirs against the primal and destructive cannonade provided by the rhythm section composed of bass player Sean Fitzgerald and drummer Shane Patrick. Among this pandemonium, vocalist Michael Keenan howls like a feral child, if that child were to have the capacity for speech. And yet, these songs have an infectious quality about them. They wriggle their way into the listener's mind and set up residence like a clew of earworms. These are hymns of sex and violence, of death and transformation, of public humiliation and private perversion. "Barnburner" is a dirty and unseemly snapshot of a damaged and seedy group of individuals. Too imperfect to exist on their own, Hawks have stumbled upon a strange sort of synergy - together. This, their first full length record, showcases the band's ability to document their own self-destructive tendencies, and in doing so, present something of horrific beauty. Black 180g vinyl. Huge poster insert and download code coupon.

HAWKS "Rub" LP 15€
(Trans Ruin Records/Army of Bad Luck Records)
Hawks are back with their second album "Rub" out on Trans Ruin/Army of Bad Luck, the follow up to what was a pretty damn impressive debut a couple years back with "Barnburner". Carrying on in the same eerie and deranged spirit that they have in the past, Hawks move away a bit from the less threatening rambling slurred psychotics of old and delve deeper into some darker and downright creepy territory on some of these tracks. A case where less is more is certainly at work in the presentation, strewn along by a couple of segue pieces that leave a definite chill in their wake. The bands overall sound has also gotten an added boost in the production department (courtesy of Kyle Spence of Harvey Milk/Dinosaur Jr.), scaling back on the ear ravaging distortion and focusing more heavily on a backdrop of drums and bass that results in a hulking mass of noise. Hawks have certainly taken a step up with "Rub" by presenting a set of songs that shows a couple or so different sides of the band while in no way losing the upfront and physical nature that they operate oh so well in. If you were a fan of what they have done before, then this should hit the spot. Second press on white vinyl and standard sleeve with insert and download code coupon.

HAWKS / CAFE FLESH Split 2x7"
(Trans Ruin Records)
Hawks have a well-earned reputation as relentless noisemongers; their cacophonous, go-for-the-gut rock and certifiable stage antics have been striking fear and discomfort in the heart of timid concertgoers for almost three years running. And, in fairness, to listen to their their music is to invite a certain amount of punishment—atonal and abrasive guitars rip at your face while violently lumbering bass lines and thundering drums try to drag you under. Standing firm in the face of such rusty, mean aggression is no easy task. In many ways the two tracks on the group’s latest effort, a double split 7" with France’s Cafe Flesh, picks up where their impressive debut, "Barnburner", left off. "Hey Regina" and "Pity Party" are both lean and ferocious, and just a little bit paranoid. Of the two, "Pity Party" is slower and moodier, a jagged, belligerent stomper fueled by buzzsaw guitars and Michael Keenan’s furious snarls and howls. Not to be outdone, "Hey Regina" is a brutal battering ram that flies by at a blistering pace and obliterates everything in its path. No band in Atlanta delivers music this raw and bruising. Their scorched-earth songs may sound unhinged, but, musically, everything is airtight and maniacally on lock. For their part, Cafe Flesh deliver two songs that skew slightly more towards the melodic, but that are no less pummeling. It’s easy to see why Trans Ruin would want to pair these two bands together. They’ve got the steel-chewing AmRep sound down cold with serrated guitars that churn seamlessly through piercing noise rock and discordant hardcore punk. "Stopping Speaking" is the standout track, a tense, tightly-knit effort that rumbles along ominously before plunging headlong into a jarring chorus. Two gold/black swirl vinyls in a nice double-7" sleeve.

THE SUNGLASSES "Bad Happy" LP 15€
(Trans Ruin Records/Darkwolf Records)
Released in August of 2009, "Bad Happy" was The Sunglasses' official coming out party — a dirty, abrasive, 11-song trudge through muddy, grunge-y sludge and caterwauling noise rock. It's a relentlessly aggressive, oftentimes brutal mess, the sort of pummeling, discordant dude-rock. This is music tailor-made for sweaty, beer-soaked basement shows, especially when its hardwired to the sort of indomitable hardcore punk spirit exhibited on tracks like "Boosh" and "100 Names". There's nothing particularly innovative or new here — unfortunately, channeling The Jesus Lizard and the dissonant, atonal AmpRep aesthetic does tend to date your music at least a decade — but The Sunglasses play with such abandon and "fuck all" attitude that it hardly matters. Clear/red splatter vinyl in full colour sleeve.

CD:

HAWKS "Pushover" CD 10€
(Learning Curve Records)
Now signed to Learning Curve records, Hawks present their third album "Pushover". Listening to it, there definitely seems to be some meeting ground between what they've done with their previous couple of albums. The band has never been shy of creating an ominous and possibly threatening type of mood. Their first album "Barnburner" mostly succeeded because of the complete dedication to that, with some small help from a muddied and nearly indecipherable vocal sound/approach. With their follow "Rub", they dropped some of the overwhelming sleaze in favor of a much stronger and bass heavy lumber. The drumming in particular was massive sounding. Aside from some segues through, "Rub" seemed slightly more focused on overpowering the listener than creeping. The vocals had also moved away from the psychotic slurred Yow-ish style as well, giving hints of a band moving towards being a more complete rock'n'roll machine… well a noisy one at least. With that, "Pushover" seems to draw upon just about every past aspect of the band in a much more subtle way. The move towards a riff-centric unit and one that is focused more so on musicianship than shock has fully taken place on this album. There is no need to steam roll through with an exaggerated production when the songs themselves can create that type of necessary power. As far as overall style goes, the band isn't doing anything entirely different on the album. It’s just honed in and the result is another step forward. Good band, good album. The CD comes in carton slip sleeve.

This split tape, released in 2010, pairs together Atlanta's Hawks with San Antonio's The Grasshopper Lies Heavy. Hawks storm through five songs (2 studio tracks and 3 live tracks) in their usual no-holds-barred noise rock fashion. Bass-heavy rhythm foundation glazed with scuzzy guitars and seasoned with Michael Keenan's mustard-in-rectum vocals. Can't go wrong with those ingredients! The Grasshopper Lies Heavy is a different kind of beast, blasting five tracks worth of low-end instrumental ear candy comparable to early Floor, 5ive and newer acts such as Black Cobra.
