KILSLUG "God's Funeral" 7"
(Necro-Tone Records)
Kilslug, one of the few bands who were running in the same bracket as Drunks With Guns, Flipper, Brainbombs and The Jesus Lizard influenced a bunch of newer bands like Pissed Jeans, Clockcleaner etc. You should really own all Kilslug records as they were defintely niche makers in their time. 3 years ago Kilslug returned from a 20 year hiatus. These 2 songs were recorded in 2010. It's the first studio recording since 1985's monolithic "Answer the Call" LP! Both "On the Rise" and "Human Sacrifice" capture the sludge/noise/punk sound these guys are known for. If you're expecting these guys to have changed with time, you're dead wrong. This sounds like the Kilslug you either love or hate and if you like any of the aformentioned bands, you seriously need this. 545 copies pressed of which 330 copies on black vinyl. The copies available from Kaos Kontrol come on white vinyl.

KILSLUG "Sins, Tricks & Lies" 11" 16€
(Limited Appeal Records)
Kilslug went to hell and back to deliver "Sins, Tricks & Lies". Don’t think that's an exaggeration… we wish it was. This three year project started after the band reformed after a 20 year hiatus. Kilslug have always been an oddball band from Boston so releasing an 11" record that plays backwards was the perfect oddball format. Due to the odd record size, everything else involving the record was now custom. Simple decisions on materials used constantly changed, from the sleeve the record slips into, to the poly bags. Every single first choice had to be rethought completely. What should have taken 2 months to record and release took over 2 years – delays with the pressing plant, finding an envelope to hold the record, artwork problems, settling on cover ideas, and being dicked around by vendors. Week after week there was problem after problem, but the band and Limited Appeal dealt with it with a 'fuck you, you're not going to kill this project!' attitude. It is a huge feat to get new material recorded from the band, and package it up and present a killer looking, unique product – an odd sized, backwards playing record that is packaged to look like an antique bible. This is the only thing worthy of a follow up to "Answer the Call". That was the record that got most people hooked on this band. "Sins, Tricks & Lies" is the record that will keep them as fans 20 years later. 11" record on blood red vinyl, playing from the inside towards a locked groove. Housed in hardcover bound leatherette jacket, made to look like an old bible. Limited edition of 275 copies. (High price due to expensive manufacturing.)

DIRTDRINKER "s/t" 7"
(Black Lake Records/Fuck Life Records)
Dirtdrinker are a new Scottish two piece from Aberdeen. From the name alone, you'd be guessing loud ugly sludge. It's a two thirds right guess - it is enticingly loud and ugly, but this is of a more hardcore/noise rock ouevre. This self titled three track is an impressive showcase, more so because, like the best two pieces (Big Business, Beehoover, Black Cobra) it sounds bigger than the sum of its members. This is great gig music for some above-the-bar room toilet size venue - aggressively full on, with bold riffs and a slightly gritty production that fits perfectly. Opener "Plaguescape" is probably the highlight, but the belligerent following "Wastewalker" doesn't mess around either and "Husks" wraps it all well, although the sample which concludes matters, a generally lefty rant, sours the ending a little - nothing wrong with the politics, but it seems a bit cliched. Dirtdrinker are one to look out for, for sure. Seeking comparisons, maybe Botch could be mentioned, but then maybe not that technical, it's hardcore for sure and definitely not on the looser punk side. KEN Mode are definitely a band that comes to mind and there's always a way to compare to fit Unsane into the comparisons, if only for the sheer amount of violence in the sound. Black vinyl in black/white sleeve with lyrics insert. Limited and numbered edition of 100 copies.

BURMESE "Monkeys Tear Man to Shreds, Man Never Forgives Ape, Man Destroys Environment" CD 10€
(Tumult)
If you lived in San Francisco a few years back, you may have seen these local never do well playing live, with set times ranging from 30 seconds to 15 minutes, and often covered in blood, writhing on the floor in a heap of destroyed instruments, charging wildly through the crowd, smashing tables and chairs (and playing with other club destroyers the Black Dice and Arab on Radar). So you'd be forgiven for expecting a messy sloppy record that is nothing without the live show. But boy, would you be wrong. Burmese's first record is a dense, ultra heavy, super low end (they have 2 basses and no guitar at all) crushing and pummelling onslaught. The opening track is an intense free noise explosion of rumbles, feedback, and spastic drumming (and that's a pre Thee Oh Sees John Dwyer behind the kit!). The next 20 tracks take the grind of Drop Dead, drop it a few octaves, and add some seriously fucked arrangements. The last track is an epic drone à la Earth: waves of subsonics weave in and out of malfunctioning electronics until the whole thing dissolves into a wash of turntables and instrument hum (you might recognise some of the turntable noise at the end, it's a bit of the last A Minor Forest recording, which Burmese recorded over). Somewhere between Drop Dead and Earth, this is some of the craziest, heaviest, noisiest low end grind/sludge you've heard in a while.

BURMESE "A Mere Shadow and Reminiscence of Humanity" CD 10€
(Tumult)
Smashed drum kits, blown bass amps, band and audience, drums and guitars, mic cords and stands, tables and chairs, all in a bloody, sweaty, writhing pit in the middle of the club. The return of the four headed hydra, Burmese, San Francisco's grind/noise/sludge behemoth. Cutting a swath of mayhemic brutality and entropic dissonance through the stale SF scene, Burmese make their table-tossing, audience-baiting, tantrum-throwing peers look like charm school graduates. Punk rock Gallants to Burmese's skull crushing, soul poisoning, ear shredding Goofus. Now with an extra drummer and a renewed, dangerously unhealthy obsession with Whitehouse, Burmese have slowed things down a bit. Gone are the hyperspeed blast beats and in their place are midtempo dirges, stumbling drunkenly through nihilistic, grinding sludge, spewing bile and ultraviolence. Pounding militaristic beats demarcate vast expanses of throbbing feedback, guttural growls, tarpit washes of bowel loosening low-end and 16 rpm grindcore. Things do speed up occasionally into blurry bursts of static and skree, but even then, they eventually devolve back into some sort of primordial and glacial caveman stomp, all murky thud and swampy roar, thick and suffocating and massively heavy. This is some seriously scary shit. Grinding and pounding. Punishing and pummelling. Relentless and brutal.

GUAPO "Great Sage, Equal of Heaven" CD 10€
(Tumult)
UK noise-skree-experimental rock duo Guapo really took their prog-rock obessions to the limit on this, their 2001 masterpiece, "Great Sage, Equal of Heaven", their first and only for Tumult, and for many their first exposure to Guapo, before they blew up, moving on to release equally amazing records on other labels such as Cuneiform, Ipecac, Aurora Borealis, Neurot and others. Guapo have always littered their heavy hardcore avant-pummel with prog-rock references, specifically of the "zeuhl" variety - they even had a 7" single entitled "Guapo vs. Magma". And their previous release was a live improv collaboration with Japanese beyond-prog madmen the Ruins. Now, with "Great Sage...", Guapo have made an intense, over-the-top all-instrumental prog masterpiece for the 21st century. From the truly bizarre cover and interior paintings to the mindboggling and completely fucked song structures to the sax blowouts of ex-Honkie Caroline Krabel to the lengthy drum solo that pops up in "Zero for Conduct" to the album-closing 16 minute epic "El Topo" whose heavosity rivals that of Tarantula Hawk, this disc is a must for all adventurous rock listeners ready for something that tops the progressive freakouts of the 1970s. Especially if you like the Ruins (their heavier, less spastic stuff especially) or Ruins' Magmoid side-project Koenjihyyakei, you should check this out!!

LIKE A KIND OF MATADOR "Halfway to Dangerous" CD 10€
(Tumult)
First and final release from this now defunct UK trio who meld crushing slow motion doom/drone/sludge with haunting prog and drifting abstract ambience. A swirling, slow moving prog-doom juggernaut. Massive downtuned riffage churns around fluttery flutes, while wheezing accordions whirl beneath angelic female vox and warm whirring organs, all wound into subtly complex expanses of slow motion heaviness and epic cinematic drone metal... almost like a magnificent, hypothetical Boris/Bardo Pond collaboration. Three long songs, the shortest just shy of ten minutes, the longest clocking in at twenty, each a slow burning slow build, layers of drones and hushed shimmer, often taking upwards of half the song before the various elements coalesce into actual riffs, the drums kicking in and the band lurching into a massive ultra doom start / stop groove, explosions of blown out buzz giving way to long stretches of hushed whisper, only to be swallowed up again by another roiling onslaught, a heaving wall of downtuned guitars, a pounding barrage of thunderous percussion. All the while, a simple, repeating motif, hovers above, or lurks just below the caustic grinding heaviness, floating like some sonic specter, the vocals dreamy and drifty, a subtle seventies pagan folk vibe infusing the otherwise crushing doom. The flute unfurling dreamy melancholic melodies over vast expanses of crumbling distortion, laced with glistening harmonics, and warm blurred soft focus shimmer. The drums slipping from abstract minimal crush to monstrous lumbering groove. Hypnotic, repetitive, mesmerizing, trance-like. At once familiar, and essential listening for fans of Sunn O))), Harvey Milk, Earth, Monarch and all things slow, low and heavy. But at the same time, strangely alien, with a subtle muted beauty lurking at the heart of Like a Kind of Matador's gloriously epic crumbling black mass of sound, within each song a breathless subtlety, a deep haunting otherworldliness, transforming dense low end explorations into something much more expansive and divine. Even at its very heaviest, it still manages to sound woozy and dreamlike, haunting and pretty, and utterly breathtaking.

TAR "Feel This" 7"
(Chunklet)
Tar, the Chicago four-piece, known from their releases on Touch and Go and Amphetamine Reptile, packed it up after a set at the Lounge Ax in 1995. And here, seventeen years later, they're returning to perform this summer at the PRF BBQ in Chicago. To honor the occasion, Chunklet Industries and Tar are proud to bring you a limited 7" featuring two previously unreleased songs. "Feel This" and "Hell's Bells" were recorded during the "Over and Out" sessions in 1995 and have been unheard since. "Feel This" is practically two Tar jams crammed into one (and that very well may be the case) and yes, "Hell's Bells" is an AC/DC cover complete with service desk bell. Much like the magicicada, Tar is back for now. But get in on it now or you'll have to wait another seventeen years. Black vinyl (limited to 200 copies out of the 450 copies in total) in full colour sleeve, including a digital download code and a pack of Tar matches. This 7" is already sold out from the label, so this might be your last chance to pick up a copy!

AMEN RA "Mass II" LP 15€
(ConSouling Sounds)
Finally available is the re-release of Amen Ra's "Mass II", together with "Ritual II", for the very first time on vinyl. Belgium's premier doom/sludge/post-metal outfit's massive sound unfolds itself in its full potential this time around. Billy Anderson (Eyehategod, Melvins, Neurosis, Swans...) remastered the album and he truly managed to unleash the beast. The combination of moving compositions, the unique Amen Ra riffing and the violent outpours never sounded more intense, dramatic and profound. You haven't really experienced "Mass II", until you've heard this version! The edition is limited to 500 copies (75 clear/splatter, 125 clear, 300 black), all on 180 grams vinyl to contribute to the ultimate listening experience. Black vinyl available from Kaos Kontrol!

GNAW THEIR TONGUES "Per Flagellum Sanguemque, Tenebras Veneramus" 2x10" 18€
(ConSouling Sounds)
"Per Flagellum Sanguemque, Tenebras Veneramus"; roughly translated: with blood and whip, we worship the dark. This is the latest collection of atrocities from Gnaw Their Tongues, an eight song investigation into the rites and rituals that emerge from the copper-scented frenzy of the serial killer, the obsessive acts of death worship enacted by those that live on the edge of abyss, the limits of experience sought by black cults. The sound is, as always, immensely heavy, with fractured drums and tunderous tympani skins reverberating within a maelstrom of seething black doom, screeching classical strings, horns, piano, and some of the most vomitous vocals imagineable. However, "Per Flagellum Sanguemque" is marked by the most frenetic percussive attack heard thus far from Gnaw Their Tongues, with volleys of chaotic drumming, fractured blasts, and maniacally complex patterns that sometimes seem to border on free-jazz drumming. Two black vinyls in a gatefold 10" sleeve. Limited edition of 250 copies.

HAWKS "Pushover" LP 12€
(Rejuvenation Records)
Now signed to Learning Curve records, Hawks present their third album "Pushover". Listening to it, there definitely seems to be some meeting ground between what they've done with their previous couple of albums. The band has never been shy of creating an ominous and possibly threatening type of mood. Their first album "Barnburner" mostly succeeded because of the complete dedication to that, with some small help from a muddied and nearly indecipherable vocal sound/approach. With their follow "Rub", they dropped some of the overwhelming sleaze in favor of a much stronger and bass heavy lumber. The drumming in particular was massive sounding. Aside from some segues through, "Rub" seemed slightly more focused on overpowering the listener than creeping. The vocals had also moved away from the psychotic slurred Yow-ish style as well, giving hints of a band moving towards being a more complete rock'n'roll machine… well a noisy one at least. With that, "Pushover" seems to draw upon just about every past aspect of the band in a much more subtle way. The move towards a riff-centric unit and one that is focused more so on musicianship than shock has fully taken place on this album. There is no need to steam roll through with an exaggerated production when the songs themselves can create that type of necessary power. As far as overall style goes, the band isn't doing anything entirely different on the album. It’s just honed in and the result is another step forward. Good band, good album. This is the European vinyl version, released by the French Rejuvenation Records. White/red splatter vinyl in stylish sleeve with printed inner sleeve.

WARD & TRUE LORDS OF VATICAN "s/t" Tape
(Johnny Park Avenue Records/Black Floyd's Tapes)
After their split 7" with Hävitys, Ward returns with a two-song tape, this time collaborating with True Lords of Vatican who provide additional electronics to the otherwise organic Ward sound. The 20 minute tape captures and violates the listener at triple-D magnitude; darkness, despair, death. Slow and menacing sludge/doom crawl combined with crusty filth is what Ward delivers here and paired with the torturing ambient noise of True Lords of Vatican, the result is far from the happy-go-lucky stoner vibes contaminating the genre these days. THE 1985 "s/t" 7"
(Monotonstudio Records)
Three songs that could very well come from the very early 80s, New York underground/avantgarde scene. The theme of this 7” is a Simmons electronic drumset which gives the songs even more of an authentic feeling. The 1985 have been compared as the bastard child of Gang of Four, PiL and The Birthday Party. However The 1985 is no retro-cliché-disaster. The 1985 are very original and special while citing the past. Black vinyl in black/white sleeve.

HEXIS "Seputus/Fatum" 7"
(Monotonstudio Records/Black Lake Records/Enjoyment Records/Gardens/Braincrushing Records/Skaven Records)
This Copenhagen based young band have already in their history a bunch of releases and have toured across Europe. These guys have shared stage with great names like Celeste, The Secret and This Gift is a Curse and quote on their influences several great names such as Deathspell Omega, Portal, Shora, Celeste, The Secret and many others. Where some try to fuse a lot of their influences, such as black metal, hardcore, crust, sludge, only few have come back with their own formula to success. Hexis are definitely one of them and probably one of the most important bands of the genre in Europe right now, leaving a trail of devastation wherever they go. The secret of Hexis? Well, their unique blend of chaotic hardcore and blackened sludge metal that spits these powerful waves of destruction capable of throwing you against the wall in the most epic and brutal way. Their sound resembles the French band Celeste a lot, but Hexis could be that evil twin sister who was separated at birth. The one who is cold, raw, ugly and you really don't want to mess with for sure. This 7", "Seputus/Fatum", is basically a compendium of all the themes the band has dealt with so far. Hexis' music is like a tank crushing everything and everyone in its path and they're one of the best acts coming out of Europe at the moment. Clear vinyl with black haze (limited to 300 copies out of 500 copies in total) in black/white sleeve.

MR. PETER HAYDEN "First Cycle Complete" 7"
(Post Rock Cafe Hietakulma)
It's a spooky little record, this one. Apart from some scrawling on the inner label, which reveals its origin as probably Finnish, there's not much info here, and the music itself doesn't give away much. Esoteric, gloomy, repetitive, dark, occult doom metal with occasional vocals far behind in the mix and arbitrary voodoo drumming on top. Two alternate versions of one song, one of which sounds like Black Sabbath, the other like Hawkwind, both of which sound like they crawled out of the tundra and belong to some secret order. Black vinyl.

THIS GIFT IS A CURSE "I, Guilt Bearer" LP 12€
(Monotonstudio Records/Bloated Veins/Braincrushing Records/Enjoyment Records/Discouraged Records)
This Gift is a Curse is a band from Stockholm, Sweden playing a great style of music that combines elements of hardcore, black metal, and sludge into a dark, crushing, and oppressive style of music. All the while, the band displays a strong punk undercurrent that gives the band a really rough and jagged edge to their music. "I, Guilt Bearer" is the band's second release and first full length LP. The nine songs on this LP are heavy, ominious, and leave you feeling like you're suffocating under their oppressive weight. During the late summer and early fall of 2011 the band recorded what came to be "I, Guilt Bearer" at a secret location north of Stockholm. To be free from any time limit, they asked the producer Magnus Björk (who worked with bands like Meleeh and Children of Fall) to move his studio to this specific location so the band could work with the recording without boundaries and whenever they felt like. What you hear is a harsh, honest and straight forward sound combined with a solid core of musical - as well as dark blunt emotional depth. Black/red splatter vinyl in full colour sleeve with printed inner sleeve. Limited edition of 500 copies.

KIM PHUC "Copsucker" LP 15€
(Iron Lung Records)
Originally slated to be released on Parts Unknown but delayed for a near eternity, and eventually landing in the hands of Iron Lung Records, this is Kim Phuc's debut LP. "Copsucker" is the pinnacle sound of a band that has been crafting, honing and re-imagining the way punk music should be played, with so much raw atmosphere and energy that it will probably rip you apart. Be careful. We believe they are that good. If you have had the good fortune to see these guys live then you already know that they are unbelievably tight and intensely powerful without having to lean on novelty or pretense to hook you. Rob might accidentally rub some sweat mud on your pants front but once he's come down he'll most likely offer to clean that victory stain off lickety-split. For those unfamiliar with the Kim Phuc sound, it lands somewhere near the idea of Warsaw -era Joy Division on steroids with a distinct Pittsburgh edge. Second pressing of the LP comes on light blue vinyl in black/white sleeve with poster insert.

SLICES "Still Cruising" LP 15€
(Iron Lung Records)
"Still Cruising" is the second full length from this Pittsburgh crazed out noise rock band. The albums opening chords for "Still Cruising/Trying to Make a Living" lead the listener to believe that this could head in the direction of the previous album, an unsettling trip into grimy bad vibes hardcore, but that's all flipped on its side when the sound of motorcycles fire up and Slices dive right into full on rock'n'roll mode. Littering the tune with the needed distortion and more importantly riffs to make it a true stomping good time, it's a furiously paced tune that hints at some of the Didjits' higher points. A good portion of the more flat out rock moments on this album do actually. As the band would have it though, those are only a few key parts of this record. What Slices do with "Still Cruising" is somehow inject the bits of hardcore/noise in places and in ways that don't even seem unusual at all. It's fused together so smoothly that the transition from a thirty-nine second blast of hardcore like on "Human Resources" into the catchy rock styling of "Why Do You Make Yourself Sad" and then into the calming elevator tones of "Forever Cruising", makes all the sense in world. Pink vinyl in full colour sleeve with insert and digital download coupon.

TRUE RADICAL MIRACLE "Cockroaches" LP 15€
(Iron Lung Records)
It's hard to believe that True Radical Miracle has been largely ignored outside of Australia until now. Maybe it's because "Cockroaches" was only available on CD in Australia back in 2006. Maybe it's because the world wasn't quite ready for the cruel haunted ugliness that makes them a staple in the Aussie noise rock scene. "Cockroaches" reflects on The Bad Seeds and "Filth/Cop" era Swans but takes it's primitive nature to new level by smashing the mirror and hacking those bands to chunks with the shards. It's spent 5 years in the shadows of the outback but now it's time for the world to experience this madness. Let the cockroaches crawl all over you. Black vinyl in full colour sleeve with digital download coupon. Limited edition of 500 copies.

TRUE RADICAL MIRACLE "Termites" LP 15€
(Iron Lung Records)
The current Australian underground music scene is quickly becoming something we will be talking about worldwide in the same way that "80's US hardcore" or "West Coast Power Violence" are now. True Radical Miracle offers their second LP of jagged sunburnt noise rock in the fashion of these modern times of struggle and woe. This will not cheer you up. This may drive you further into oblivion. Best material to date. Black vinyl in black/white sleeve with insert and digital download coupon.
http://trueradicalmiracle.bandcamp.com

USELESS CHILDREN "Post Ending//Pre Completion" LP 15€
(Iron Lung Records)
Iron Lung once again dives back into Australia, particularly to the Melbourne based Useless Children and their new album "Post Ending//Pre Completion". Safely categorized as noise rock and obviously a band that was likely aiming for that recognition anyway, this is the swirling mess of big bass rattling and fuzz that gets fans of the genre extremely excited. So do that, get excited because this record is pretty damn good. At eight songs, Useless Children get a bit expansive with their sonically overwhelming experiments by somewhat utilizing the styles/approach of psych/shoegaze with huge sheets of feedback coating the crushingly heavy bass that trudges forth. However, don’t expect obvious riffage or melody here, no this is some nasty stuff. Useless Children are prepared to give the speakers of your stereo an intense work out with the collage of noise that takes place over the duration of the album. Alex Newport handles the production work here and he's no stranger to fuzz peddling and ample effects from during his days in Fudge Tunnel and so on. So he's probably right at home here with handling production duties on "Post Ending//Pre Completion" and one who can allow the multitude of sounds going on here to shine through most effectively. A powerful representation of how wonderful "noise" can sound. Black vinyl in full colour sleeve with insert and digital download coupon.

VINYYLIT:

16 "Curves that Kick" LP 15€
(Relapse Records)
"Curves that Kick", the long out-of-print debut album from the SoCal quartet 16 threw the doors open to a new, post-Helmet/AmRep sound of discordance and discontent. Originally released on Pushead's Bacteria Sour label in '93, the album exposed the nascent beginnings of the soon-to-be infamous quartet. As "Curves that Kick" proved then and underscores now in its remixed and remastered form, 16 is its own unique, belligerent human animal. Black 180g vinyl in newly designed full colour sleeve. Limited edition of 500 copies.

16 "Drop Out" LP 15€
(Relapse Records)
The beastly, throbbing riffs and tortured screams of 16's now-legendary "Drop Out" album sent shockwaves through the international music scene upon its '96 release. It's obvious why over a decade later; the band made visceral anguish, angst, and disillusionment sound downright anthemic. 16 put an ugly, angry face on disenfranchised youth and "Drop Out" became a touchstone and soundtrack for the next generation of heavy rock trail blazers and trendsetters. Limited edition of 500 copies on black 180g vinyl in newly designed full colour sleeve.

16 "Deep Cuts from Dark Clouds" LP 15€
(Relapse Records)
Southern California’s godfathers of bum-out, 16 return with another masterpiece of bleakness on "Deep Cuts from Dark Clouds". 16 maintain their position atop the mountain of sludge-metal. What has always set 16 apart from their doom and sludge contemporaries has been their ability to set the utter bleakness of singer Cris Jerue's lyrics to undeniably catchy and heavy riffs and grooves, and "Deep Cuts from Dark Clouds" finds the band absolutely perfecting this already addictive combo. Never has extreme depression and despair sounded so good! Limited edition of 500 copies on red vinyl in full colour sleeve.
www.myspace.com/16

SEMTEX "Sex, Drugs & Sludgecore" LP 13€
(Bluntagram)
Semtex have never kept their weedian tendencies hidden and the title they've chosen for their debut vinyl certainly spells out the band's agenda loud and clear. Heavy, groovy, spaced out stuff inspired by the likes of Bongzilla and Weedeater is what Semtex delivers, still managing to bring some elements of their own to the mix. Thematically less depraved and self-destructive than a lot of the older Finnish sludge bands, but Semtex are definitely among the best bands in the current wave. Black vinyl in full colour fold-out sleeve with lyrics insert and a poster. Limited edition of 200 copies.

TODAY IS THE DAY "Willpower" LP 15€
(Relapse Records)
Nothing if not emotionally devastating, "Willpower's" warmth and accessible breadth proved the perfect complement to "Supernova's" calculated coldness and musical mysticism. Exploring distrust, loyalty, death, passion, memory, and excess in the span of nine songs, this album certainly runs the emotional gamut. Changes in mood are echoed by sea changes in volume and dynamics, Austin's high-pitched scream yielding to a breathy, near-silent spoken whisper in the space of a few measures. Though its time signatures are still tricky in a mathematical way, "Willpower's" greatest strength is its appeal to the human heart through whatever means necessary. Opening with a particularly telling audio sample, Today is the Day's sophomore effort is the sound of man's struggle to keep it together despite all odds. This album is as beautiful and striking as it is painful and charged with darkness. The reissue comes with a bonus track as well as a digital download coupon. Limited edition of 504 copies on black vinyl.

TODAY IS THE DAY "s/t" LP 15€
(Relapse Records)
Having subtracted bass from Today is the Day and added keyboards, noise rock auteur Steve Austin thereby altered his outfit stylistically, moving from the warmth and emotional appeal of "Willpower" to an icily digital landscape of painful, high-frequency tones, screeched vocals, and even more painful guitar. "Today is the Day" is a brutal record, owing a bit of its industrial nature to acts like Skinny Puppy and Merzbow. However, this is hardly textbook industrial music. Still utilizing guitar and organic drums, Today is the Day is not driven by the keyboards so much as augmented sonically by them. The keys produce more of an atmospheric than a melodic effect, thereby leaving the essential constitution of Today is the Day intact and guitar-driven. The reissue comes with two bonus tracks as well as a digital download coupon. Limited edition of 499 copies on black vinyl.

16 "Zoloft Smile" LP 12€
(Bastardized Recordings)
Ten sludge filled tales of urban decay, domestic despair, and misery delivered courtesy of this Los Angeles, CA based troupe. Terminally deviant tirades, fuzz enshrouded riffs, and bleary narco-rhythms conspire to lay waste to your eardrums (and frontal lobe). For fans of anything and everything heavy (and cough syrup). Don't fight it, you need this album! Limited edition of 900 copies on black vinyl in full colour sleeve with lyrics insert.

FLESHPRESS "Rebuild-Crumble" MLP 13€
(Throne Records)
Something of a concept EP concerned with the act of natural creation and the law of entropy as it applies to the ephemeral state of humankind's achievements, "Rebuild/Crumble" is one of two great Eps that have come out recently from the mighty Fleshpress, those Finnish sludgelords who poison their grueling, grinding slow motion heaviness with a terminally hateful worldview and some interesting psychedelic elements. Clocking in at just under twenty minutes, this two song disc might be on the short side, but it's unrelenting in it's skull-crushing heaviness. "Rebuild" opens with looped backwards sound and airy room hiss, a strange environmental ambience that becomes filled with swells of feedback that converge into a moody post-rock instrumental. Twangy clean guitar ripples over shuffling slow-paced drums, and for a moment, Fleshpress seem to be channeling the brooding slowcore of Codeine. Then, out of nowhere they kick into a lurching crusty assault, snarling sludge that abruptly shifts gears and slows down into even more sluggish depths of heaviness before grinding back into the droning sludge. In response, "Crumble" layers slow pounding toms, mysterious scraping sounds and percussive clanking in an unsettling abstract intro; an ominous guitar melody creeps in, again forming into sinister slowcore, but slowly building into another blast of snarling apocalyptic sludge, and this time when the band peaks into the crushing riffs and thunder of tribal drumming, it has this Amebix / Neurosis-like vibe, all bleakly apocalyptic till they suddenly drop out at the end, with just a dark, ominous piano minor key melody hovering in the blackness. Limited edition of 400 copies on black vinyl in full colour sleeve.

HARVEY MILK "The Singles" 2LP 18€
(Relapse Records)
Too heavy to be post rock. Too weird to be metal. Too everything to be anything, Harvey Milk are unconventional and wholly unique, both structurally and sonically. Harvey Milk crafted inconceivable slabs of mesmerizing, ultra dynamic sludge, as well as precious moments of effortless grace and restraint. "The Singles" delivers all the hard to find moments of their career and is at once hypnotic, repetitive, jarring, unpredictable, exhausting and perplexing. Harvey Milk are the unholy matrimony between the Melvins, ZZ Top, Kiss and Leonard Cohen - sounding like none and all. This double-LP collects the band's 7" vinyl singles and compilation appearances from 1992 to 1996. Limited edition of 500 copies on blue vinyl in full colour sleeve with insert including liner notes etc.

UNEARTHLY TRANCE / SUMA "MK Ultra" Collaboration LP+CD 15€
(Throne Records)
Spawned loosely from the mysterious lore of the CIA black operation known as Project MKULTRA, the Unearthly Trance and Suma tracks on this collaboration feature the other band's vocalist along with some additional noise. "Sleepwalking Through a Maze" consists of music that Suma recorded in Malmö and sent to Ryan Lipynsky in Brooklyn where he recorded his vocals. Unearthly Trance tracked their music for "Victim No. 581" in NYC which was then sent to Jovan where he promptly returned the track back with his vocals and additional sounds. The other track "Month of Treatment" is a harsh noise track where each Unearthly Trance member recorded a "layer" and then sent to Suma. Jovan tracked his voice and more noise was conjured up in Sweden. Unearthly Trance members Jay Newman and Ryan mixed and mastered the songs respectively. Limited edition of 400 copies on black vinyl in deluxe gatefold sleeve. Comes with a CD version of the album.

DEATH TO PIGS "La Horse" 10" 10€
(Down Boy Records/213 Records/Bande Noire Records)
Another nice release from this French noise rock/no-wave outfit, this time presenting seven songs, one of which is a cover version of the Brainbombs classic, "(It's a) Burning Hell". The cover song choice alone should already give you a pretty good idea of what sort of filth we're dealing with here. There's a definite post-punk edge to Death to Pigs along with the obvious Jesus Lizard influences, but everything's mixed up nicely in the best French noisy punk manner so that you won't need to go immediately reaching for your "Goat" vinyl when listening to this one. Black vinyl in full colour sleeve. Limited edition of 500 copies.

DEATH TO PIGS "Castro Secret Sex Casino" 7"
(Down Boy Records/213 Records/Contre Plaqué Records)
The latest 7" offering from Death to Pigs, released back in 2010. Four songs of unhealthy guitar abuse and general depravity in the form of post-punkey noise rock/no-wave. Names such as Drunks with Guns and Butthole Surfers have been thrown to describe the sound of Death to Pigs although these Frenchmen might not be as chaotic and drugged out as their American next of kin, they do their best to come up with the worst kind of racket within the genre. Black vinyl in black/white sleeve. Limited edition of 500 copies.

DIVORCE "s/t" LP 12€
(Night School Records)
This album is the culmination of four years of uncompromising noise rock brutality and the debut full-length statement from a band who have set new standards in underground extremity. Since their formation in 2008 they have progressed from no wave dirge practitioners to an unique cult that blurs the boundaries of what 'punk', 'noise rock' or 'metal' are presumed to sound like. Remaining slippery in definition but relentlessly focused, Divorce have evolved into a singular, incomparable unit. First pressing of 1000 copies, half on green vinyl and half on purple (please, specify which colour you want if it matters to you). Screenprinted sleeves and insert plus a digital download code.

SHORTY "Thumb Days" LP 15€
(Gasoline Boost Records)
Well deserved re-release of one of the best noise rock albums ever! "Thumb Days" (originally released in 1993) is the first and only album by the legendary Chicago band Shorty, who broke up in 1994 and members went on to form Mount Shasta and U.S. Maple. This album was recorded by Steve Albini and the original edition of the vinyl has been sold out for a decade now. Ten tracks which combined form a crucial piece of U.S. noise rock history. The remastered reissue comes on black vinyl in unique silkscreened sleeve with insert. Limited edition of 213 copies.

BLACK CONGRESS "Defeated / Slums of Heaven" 7"
(Death Exclamations)
Hands down one of the best new U.S. noise rock bands as of late! This five-piece from Houston, Texas has obviously done their homework on the classic AmRep catalogue, but manage to build a sound of their own on that foundation and the Black Congress sound is noisier and far more menacing than that of their 90s forefathers. The two tracks here present a violent and sweaty gangbang scene of feedback, reverb and noise forcing the listener on his knees to receive the drenching climax. Black vinyl in black/white sleeve. DEMONIC DEATH JUDGE "Skygods" CD 10€
(Inverse Records)
Almost exactly one year after the release of their debut self-titled full length, Demonic Death Judge present their sophomore effort, "Skygods". Those familiar with the band's sound won't be disappointed by the sheer magnitude of the riffage this time around either, but the development compared to earlier works can be heard in the song writing and even wider range of sounds utilised. The hooks are stronger, the groove is... well, groovier and the occasional spaced out psychedelia is deeper than before.

Second cassette release from this Reading -based four piece. BLACK SHAPE OF NEXUS "Negative Black" 2LP 18€
(Exile on Mainstream Records)
During the four long years since Black Shape of Nexus started working to get this new album finished, they underwent numerous line up changes, short-term hiatuses, phases of utter productivity and periods of calm as well as those of energy. All this has been channelled into an album drawing a true emotional landscape of the current Black Shape of Nexus. 80 minutes of pure sonic assault! Recorded in the mild winter of 2011/12 and twisted into shape at the mighty Tonmeisterei studio, this album marks a new step for Black Shape of Nexus, postulating a path into their forseeable future. No need to rave about the fact that this is their best recording to date, once the needle hits this record on your turntable, you'll know it's true. Black 180g vinyls in heavy gatefold sleeve. Limited edition of 500 copies.

BULBUL "6" LP+CD 12€
(Exile on Mainstream Records/Rock is Hell Records)
If you belong to that unique population of true music lovers you'll understand why this band needs to be loved. Their musical approach is a unique blend of the unexpected and the unpredictable throwing monolithic rhythms down your throat that make you dance. Once your legs start moving, they've already left your body, crossed the motorway, crashed straight into the roadside trees, and started cutting wood or maybe searching for small furry animals. Bulbul incorporate pop music's superficiality as well as the structure beneath – they can annihilate the cheapest rhythm and morph it into the most virtuous and complex arrangement, all within the blink of an eye. As monstrous walls of sound channel into introspective patterns you just stand there, mouth agape while you ask yourself "how the hell is this possible and why does it feel so good?" You'll find yourself searching to categorize Bulbul with familiar band names such as Melvins, Tar, Slint, The Jesus Lizard coming to mind – these names kind of come close, but then refuse to arrive. Welcome to the world of Bulbul! Marble green 180g vinyl in screenprinted sleeve including a CD version of the album as well. Limited edition of 507 copies.

OBELYSKKH "White Lightnin'" LP 12€
(Exile on Mainstream Records)
"White Lightnin'" is a monstrous pound of sonic heaviness, psychedelic approaches and emotional riffage – ingredients that, if mixed together with love for the music can bring stunning results. Like here, Obelyskkh fear no boundaries and no flavour of the heavy: "White Lightnin'" draws from pure sludge filth through psychedelic soundscapes into post-rock and back. Sure, this album is heavy and massive but it also breathes some kinda repetitive mantra-like ambition, which clears the air here and there and thus declines total negativity. "White Lightnin'" was recorded, mixed and mastered in winter 2010/2011 by the great Billy Anderson (Sleep, Neurosis, Eyehategod, Melvins etc.) providing the record a raw live sound that gives you a hint of what an immense experience it is to witness Obelyskkh live – clearly something you shouldn’t miss. Black 180g vinyl in beautiful gatefold sleeve including a digital download coupon for the album plus two bonus tracks! Limited edition of 500 copies.

WINO & CONNY OCHS "Heavy Kingdom" LP 12€
(Exile on Mainstream Records)
The Legacy of Scott "Wino" Weinrich in the world of heavy music is indisputable. Many have postulated his influence in the underground rock scene over the last decades. Now Wino teams up with Conny Ochs, a songwriter so pure and honest in his output that he seems to be the perfect partner. Both met for the first time in 2010 when Conny was supporting Wino on his acoustic solo tour promoting "Adrift". From the beginning there seemed to be an extraordinary vibe rotating between the two individuals. Through music they discovered a very similar approach to life and art and a shared wisdom in creating music. It really seemed like two souls becoming one after they learned to know each other. By the end of the tour they had achieved this and shared the stage every night and Conny would lay down his skills on Wino tracks. After both recorded an infamous "Latitudes" session in London by the end of the 2010 tour it was now time for a full album. And here you have it: 11 soulful tunes that speak for themselves, personalities shine, truth within. All songs got written and performed by Wino and Conny together. The album contains one coversong by Townes Van Zandt – an artist Conny and Wino deeply admire. 4 of the songs the both wrote in one day in Berlin in summer 2011, among them "Heavy Kingdom" which marks the first song they ever wrote together. The artwork contains drawings by both artists and follows the dedicated and deeply intense approach of the whole album. Black 180g vinyl in special fold-out sleeve with screenprinted artwork. Limited edition of 1000 copies.

KEN MODE "Venerable" LP 13€
(Throatruiner Records)
Known for effortlessly blending noise rock reminiscent of old-school Amphetamine Reptile bands with the raw and aggressive nature of modern hardcore, KEN Mode has become one of the most devastating bands in the underground, following suit in the lineage of forward thinking heavy music to come out of the Great White North – what you might hear if Voivod and Cursed had a baby that started a noise rock band. Songs like "Batholith" and "Book of Muscle" cling to the traditions of hardcore music that resonate with fans of Converge or Trap Them while "A Wicked Pike" takes on spastic noise rock elements, and "Flight of the Echo Hawk" pushes forth as a mind-bending instrumental masterpiece, clearly influenced by the post-rock movement of the 2000s. "Venerable", the band's fourth full-length album was produced by Kurt Ballou (Converge), mastered by Alan Douches at West West Side, and features artwork by Randy Ortiz. This is the European vinyl version of this record, originally released last year by Profound Lore (CD) and Init (LP). Solid red vinyl in full colour sleeve with printed inner sleeve. GREAT FALLS / PINK CITY Split Tape
(Tapes of a Neon God)
Two bands here that have one common goal of being fairly loud and noisy. Great Falls has a bit more of a metal thing going on and has connections to Playing Enemy and the Revelation Records greats Kiss It Goodbye. Their contributions of "Wound Instructions" and "The Head Opens its Red Mouth" act as one long continuous piece on their side of this split. It comes out to a blast of low end followed by the effect of some rapid fire drumming that switches off throughout the track with some slower crumbling post-metal like distortion. At times it carries a similar guitar tone to that of Godflesh, which isn't necessarily surprising since Great Falls shares a member with Broadrick's post Godflesh endeavor Jesu. Great Falls certainly lean more to the Godflesh side of things though, however without the industrial tinges and more of hardcore influence mixed in. The track continues on in this fashion before really grinding to a halt that locks into a lengthy repetitious pound that certainly comes off as an exercise in some of the moodier and darker elements of later period Neurosis. Even the vocals of Demian Johnston seem to have some resemblance. Johnston musters up one last drawn out yell before allowing the song to wind itself down with three minutes or so of feedback. On the flip side, Pink City get right to the point with "Justine" with sludgy churn of distortion paired up with a rather tuneful bass line. Compared to some of the stuff on their debut album from last year, "Justine" is a rather aggressive tune that loses a lot of the Swans type of influence that they have and focuses more so on the primal pigfuck noise of the 90’s. "Loop One" is a solid track to be featured here and certainly contains a lot of the gloomier textures that were heavily spread out on their album with a notable post-punk sort of influence. Their side finishes out with the two tracks "Traditional", a brief but ultimately effective ambient noise piece, and the appropriately titled "Final Curtain". The track starts off innocently enough with some rather faint guitar noodling before unleashing a frighteningly heavy wave of noise that rivals the pure aggression displayed by the opener on the Great Falls side of the split. Much like that track though, "Final Curtain" retreats back to a slower restrained, but no less frustrated, approach. Gathering itself for a final swing, it devolves into a swirl of feedback before fading out. More or less, we get the best of both worlds of Pink City here on this split and upcoming material should be a treat to listen to whenever that may be. Pro-duplicated clear tapes with gold liner tape and hot pink ink in full colour sleeve.

VINYYLIT:

THE BLIND SHAKE "Carmel" LP 15€
(Learning Curve Records)
Sweat trickles down the small of your back, you lose your cost but you can't cool down. Can you believe this band is real? The Blind Shake are going apeshit on stage, hammering out each song with perfect precision. Their second full length album, "Carmel" is a double-barrel cannon of a record. Riding the wave of their first release on Learning Curve Records, "Rizzograph", and a recent collaboration with psych hero Michael Yonkers, The Blind Shake hit their basement studio to crank out this coffee and pick-up football fueled recording. Recording "Carmel" in their homemade studio, The Blind Shake cultivated a sound that captures their live aggression and heart, minus the smoke and mirrors found in a professional studio recording. Each track attacks your sonic sensory. Head bobbing percussion, straight line wind guitars and cadence vocals move the listener into a frenzied motorized caustic party fuck fest. "Carmel" is the off post punk, anti noise anthem free for all call to arms. "Carmel" could be the best record to come out of the Twin Cities' vibrant underground since Lifter Puller's entertainment and arts. Hold on to your roots ecause you will be tossed in a fit of espresso charged factory work. The band of brothers, The Blind Shake are gonna make you sweat. Black vinyl in screenprinted and hand assembled sleeve.

THE BLIND SHAKE "Seriousness" LP 15€
(Learning Curve Records)
Minneapolis' The Blind Shake have a band name that aptly describes the reaction that comes from listening to their music. The spastic, rumbling, anxious noise punk that Dave Roper and brothers Mike and Jim Blaha produce on "Seriousness" is a serious feat of frenetic, nervous energy. The 13 sharp-edged, guitar-heavy tracks that comprise the album barely cover 30 minutes, feeling like a smack in the face without any sort of explanation. Sure, it stings a little, but you're left wondering where that hand came from. Jim Blaha's sort-of "Misirlou"-y, very punk guitar riff dominates the opening track and lead single "Hurracan", while brother Mike's baritone guitar scrapes along the bottom and Roper's aggressive, thrashing beat keeps things consistent. The semi-nonsense lyrics feel tossed off, but it's hard to notice a single word in the middle of the punky hurricane. The high-pitched guitar on "Man Leaves House" (when combined with the lo-fi, bassy rumble and danceable rhythm) is vaguely reminiscent of Death from Above 1979, while even the acoustic-based "Hand Me Down" hums with dark energy. The trembling "No Rags" might be the best track on the record. The song opens on another crackling structure, a James Bond-theme baritone guitar rumble with shout-along vocals. But the real difference is the band's ability to shift between danceable rhythms and pure, improvised chaos. Just when the memorable verse and chorus run their course, the guitars start squealing and the rhythm crumbles into a mess of jagged rocks, ready to be assembled again. The band doesn't lose steam musically but rather thematically. The short bursts begin to blur together, one track difficult to discern from another. However, the base line that "Seriousness" hits is high enough that this isn't a fatal flaw. The Blind Shake is very much in the punk vein, challenging the listener to like what they're doing but at the same time diving into the noisy end of the pool. Black vinyl in full colour sleeve with insert and digital download card.

DISASTERATTI "Transmissionary" LP 15€
(Learning Curve Records)
Hellbilly cowboy acid surf crunch. These are the words that spew from an unfiltered mind. The catalyst for this outburst is simple. Disasteratti. The Twin Cities' newest low brow core artist to break out with a heavy slab of wax on Learning Curve Records. Their debut full length, "Transmissionary" is a masterpiece of beer driven pig stomp surf alt wave festival shenanigans. The 11-song gem is a solid boo-ya of the glory days of 90's style rock. Aggressive rhythms, dark introspective vocals and pure redness abandon. "Transmissionary" is like the zipper ride at your county fair, you get in the cage, scream like death is at your door, adrenaline pumps through you. Up, down, backwards, forwards, fear and ecstasy all within seconds. This is the ride of this LP. Take a listen, you might end up bobbing your head, jumping around your kitchen or smashing the closest object. Disasteratti has been playing shows in and around the Twin Cities for a couple years now, as well as touring though the Midwest, developing a loyal underground fan base. Playing together for many years, Antoine, Brandon and Dari exist as a brotherhood, which is seen when they feed off each other in a live setting. Throttling their audience with mind pulsing rock. Black vinyl in full colour sleeve with insert and digital download card. Limited edition of 300 copies.

GAY WITCH ABORTION "Opportunistic Smokescreen Behavior" LP 15€
(Learning Curve Records)
The Twin Cities is always overflowing with awesome bands that seem to fly under the radar to most music critics and fans, but you certainly can't ignore the scene there when a release as loud and vitriolic as the new LP by Gay Witch Abortion is released. Their new album "Opportunistic Smokescreen Behavior" out on Learning Curve Records is just the kind of sludgy noise rock blast you need in your life right now. Gay Witch Abortion mixes and matches some of the best heavy rocking influences of the past 30 years into one helluva ear-splitting speaker-busting noise rock epic! Imagine Hammerhead, Melvins, The Cows and all the other awesome AmRep bands and the classic Touch & Go bands, then turn up the volume until everything sounds blown out and about to catch fire. Gay Witch Abortion don't just borrow from that spurt of beloved 90s aggro rock though, they yank plenty of noise mongering moves from their Load Records contemporaries Lightning Bolt and Clockcleaner and predecessors such as Arab on Radar and Harry Pussy. "Opportunistic Smokescreen Behavior" is the perfect mix of gutter sludge riffage, psych rock mindfuck and noise rock boundary-busting explorations. Black vinyl in amazing gatefold sleeve with digital download card. Limited edition of 500 copies.

HEX MACHINE "Fixator" LP 15€
(Learning Curve Records)
For Hex Machine grunge probably never really became a thing of music past. As through an album, an EP, and a 7-inch they've been laying down rippers that carry the distinct markings of such a label. And as much as people probably would like to declare it dead, it still pops up in present day. It's just not often that it remains the least bit interesting. So it's kind of extraordinary that Hex Machine have gotten such mileage out of it. But then again, this isn't exactly the clean agreeable radio rockin' that made the rounds during the genre's heyday. Rather, Hex Machine have clearly become familiar with the discographies of AmRep, Trance Syndicate, Satan's Pimp, and whatever else label that dished out healthy amounts of bottom feeder scuzz punk/noise during the 90's. On their new album "Fixator", they return to the era they love all so much and give the listeners ten more cuts of meaty riffed out noise. Nostalgia continues to run high here, but one thing that flows pretty consistently through this album that really brings it back is the notable metallic guitar tone they choose to employ. It greatly reminds of the earlier periods of grunge where it was starting to catch on to the masses, but still had vague hints of metal infused within before abandoning it altogether in favor of the chunk heavy rock that would soon follow. Hex Machine pull it off rather well without burdening themselves with the problem of sounding far too dated and in fact comes off as a nice little nod. Assumably it would be easy when reading about Hex Machine to write them off, but it would certainly be a mistake. "Fixator" is a fine example of working in the aspects of the influences that drive the band, but in the end their ability to construct songs that are both catchy and interesting inevitably win out. Black vinyl in full colour sleeve with printed inner sleeve and digital download card.

SNAILS "Pins and Needles" 7"
(Learning Curve Records)
Snails are an ace noise rock/grunge power trio featuring two guys from Guzzard (the guitarist/vocalist Dan Beeman is currently also a member of Helmet), who were an ace noise rock/grunge power trio from the early nineties. So there's no real musical development from the blueprint laid down on "In Utero". But that's hardly a criticism, as "In Utero" was/is fucking brilliant, and so are the two songs on this seven-inch. Too often, tuneful rock bands end up falling between two stools: they make a loud noise without a decent, memorable tune to back it up with, or they come off being insipid and boring. Few bands can successfully weld the two together, but Snails really do pull it off with aplomb, effectively and effortlessly experimenting with song structure along the way, wielding melodies that are menacing yet instantly memorable. This is the only release the band did with the Snails name, later changing it to We Invented Tornadoes. Black vinyl in full colour sleeve.

VAZ "The Lie that Matches the Furniture" LP 15€
(Learning Curve Records/Narnack Records)
Paul Erickson and Jeff Mooridian were in Hammerhead. That band smashed everything in it's path. They broke up. Paul and Jeff then formed Vaz. A darker, introspective two piece, with more of a pop sense than total destruction outburst. Vaz is a band that gets in your craw, twisting the inner weavings of your emotions, fears and thoughts. Vaz will change your life. Add in longtime Seawhores member, Adam Marx and the team is all there. Vaz is what you get when you pull some boys out of Fargo, ND and jam them into Brooklyn, NY. "The Lie that Matches the Furniture" is a crunchy sonic masterpiece. Bending and flexing, forcing you to contort and react to your own personal demons. Black vinyl in full colour sleeve with printed inner sleeve. Limited edition of 500 copies.

CD:

WE INVENTED TORNADOES "s/t" CD 10€
(Learning Curve Records)
We Invented Tornadoes, previously known as Snails, was a trio made out two members of AmRep greats Guzzard and the guitarist/vocalist Dan Beeman has been a member of Helmet since 2008. This self-titled debut remains their only output and features 12 songs of heavy, riff-laden noisy rock, retaining the ultra tight groove of Guzzard mixed together with a new sensibility in terms of melodies, but also more intricate structures. There's enough shouting and noisy guitars to satisfy fans of Karp or early Helmet, but definitely a catchiness to it as well, not too far from the sound perfected by Quicksand.

WORKIN' MAN NOISE UNIT "Serious Power Hour" Tape
(Doubledotdash!?)
Second cassette release from this Reading -based four piece. Workin' Man Noise Unit continue to make a big racket in the dirty noise rock tradition not too far from the sounds spat out by Amphetamine Reptile Records back in the day. This time around the band comes across more focused, spicing their feedback scuzz with some Stooges -styled catchiness and double vocals which at times sound like Karp resurrected - now how could that sound anything but good!? Orange pro-duplicated tape in full colour sleeve with digital download card. Limited edition of 75 copies.

VINYYLIT:

BOTTOM FEEDER "s/t" 7"
(Raw Birth Records)
Raw, unrelenting sludge that delivers a severe aural beating lasting just over 11 minutes, leaving a taste for violence in your mouth. Following up a sold out cassette demo, Bottom Feeder (out of Copenhagen) deliver a primal dose of sludge that is reminiscent of Iron Monkey, Grief, and Noothgrush. Not wasting one second, these degenerates dive right in and smother you with thick licks and blistering vocals while violently beating skins behind it all. These songs are barely enough to keep your teeth grinding and fists clenched but a killer debut EP from a band that is just beginning to creep out of the shadows of Europe's sludge scene. Second pressing of 200 copies on black vinyl in black/grey sleeve with insert.

METH DRINKER "s/t" LP 12€
(Raw Birth Records)
Based in Wellington, New Zealand, a city with it's own seedy undertow, Meth Drinker—with James Quick on bass and vocals, Sam Thurston on guitar and Tony Pearson on drums and vocals—grind out some of the nastiest slow-baked doom-laden sludge heard in years. With a sound that harkens back to sludge's more visceral years, when bands like Buzzov*en, Grief and Eyehategod still had the power to shock audiences, Meth Drinker have a gravity about them that drags things down from the nihilistic to down-right suicidal. Meth Drinker's view of NZ society is marked out via an insanely heavy quagmire of the muddiest filth imaginable; but it's the drums that mark out the lethargic pace on their debut—setting the mood for the guttural vocals and riffs to follow. "Deprivation", with it's chilling indistinct vocal intro, cut with a dragging guitar line, begins the album and immediately Meth Drinker set about pushing the limits of suffocating tones. "Incurable Density", brings the doom to the fore, with a stepped up pace, "Ganja Mutt" kicks off furiously and has a great late section collapse to drone out on waves of feedback and "Combat Shock" has a great little sample of hellish suburban life to introduce it's churning misery. "Shining" goes hard on the feedbacking intro, and "Narco Sub" is just the sort of track you'd play if you were trawling canals for victims of heinous crimes. Originally released in 2011 on the Always Never Fun label and quickly sold out, this is the European re-press on black vinyl in black/white sleeve with full colour insert and sticker. Limited edition of 300 copies.
