DROSE "A Voice" 7"
(Drose)
The first vinyl release by the Ohio-based group Drose is this absolutely mind melting four song single that they've put out themselves. Think of a meeting ground between the vocal theatrics of Oxbow, the industrial pummel of Swans, and the sludgy distorto crumble of Fleshpress. Basically, this shit is heavy in ways that aren't immediately apparent until you find yourself reaching the end and the realization of how exhaustive it was sets in. Working in a space that sounds cavernous, the tracks contain a faint echo that adds to the overall onset of despair that ranges from slow motion bottom dwelling to the sudden rapid fire shots of paranoia and irrational lashing out. Certainly a twisting and representative display of life from places that most of us wouldn't dare to think of. Black vinyl (limited to 200 copies out of 300 copies in total) in full colour sleeve.

CD:

DISTORMINAL DEADWAX "s/t" CD-R
(Gibbon Envy Recordings)
Distorminal Deadwax is a special project put together by Gouédé Oussou of Gibbon Envy Recordings, featuring members of Distorted Pony (David U.), Terminal Cheesecake (Gordon J. Watson), Alien Sex Fiend (Mat Rowlands) and Headcleaner (Erick Legrand). The disc contains six tracks with the aforementioned musicians performing cover versions of two Distorted Pony and Terminal Cheesecake songs as well as songs by Headcleaner and God. Interesting interpretations of noise rock/post-punk/industrial classics which at times stay true to the originals, but often take a life of their own. Pro-duplicated CD-R disc in full colour sleeve.

FIREPARIAH "s/t" CD-R
(Gibbon Envy Recordings)
FirePariah is an industrial punk/noise rock project of Dave Cochrane (Head of David, God, Sweet Tooth, Greymachine etc...), Joel Brown and Gouédé Oussou (Gibbon Envy Recordings) featuring guest appearances by Andy Newman (Glazed Baby), David U. (Distorted Pony), Joe Breuer (Bastards), Gordon Watson (Terminal Cheesecake) and many others. The sound is reminiscent of the cold U.K. style rhythmical industrial from the late 80s/90s combined with Big Black's noise rock. Pro-duplicated CD-R in full colour sleeve.

GOUÉDÉ OUSSOU "Nothing Matters" CD-R
(Gibbon Envy Recordings)
The "Nothing Matters" album by Gouédé Oussou was released in 2007 on the Gibbon Envy Recordings label. With 20 intense tracks, this is a collision of old school industrial and distorted punk rock. Their sinister rhythms and nihilistic atmospheres give this CD an intense yet surprisingly mellow experience. The experimental music takes an older style of industrial punk and brings it up to date in a different way to most other current alternative music in the genre. It's a bit sick to be honest but brilliantly atmospheric. As the pulverising drums, heavy bass tones, and clanging metal samples pound away, the warped aggressive yet mellow vocals relate a discernible undertow of disgust and horror at personal experiences. Pro-duplicated CD-R in full colour sleeve.

BERLINE0.33 "Planned Obsolescence" LP 12€
(Rejuvenation Records)
Formed in 2007 in Lille, France, this female-fronted quartet look back to the times when what later became known as noise rock was born with the arrival of bands such as The Birthday Party and Scratch Acid. That coldness of the late 80s post-punk sound is present in this French outfit as well, not to mention the untamed punky noise rock of King Snake Roost or the impossible-to-define rudeness of Lydia Lunch. Black vinyl in full colour sleeve. Limited edition of 375 copies.

CHOOCHOOSHOESHOOT "Playland" LP 12€
(Rejuvenation Records)
ChooChooShoeShoot is a post punk/noise rock outfit from Nantes, France who formed in 2004. "Playland" is the band's second eight song LP, which was released via Rejuvenation Records in 2012. Musically, ChooChooShoeShoot play a cerebral style of post punk/noise rock that draws inspiration from a variety of sources. On one hand, the band bears a strong resemblance to bands such as Jesus Lizard, Shellac, and other early Touch and Go bands. On the other hand, ChooChooShoeShoot gives nods to Skingraft/31G bands such as Arab on Radar and Chinese Stars. The band also has a really great rock/punk background reminiscent of bands like Drive Like Jehu and The New Brutalism. Overall, "Playland" makes for a stellar listen and ChooChooShoeShoot is a definite must listen for fans of Shokei, The Falcon Five, Kurt, and Trapdoor
Fucking Exit. Black vinyl in full colour sleeve. Limited edition of 300 copies.

HAWKS "Pushover" LP 12€
(Rejuvenation Records)
Now signed to Learning Curve records, Hawks present their third album "Pushover". Listening to it, there definitely seems to be some meeting
ground between what they've done with their previous couple of albums. The band has never been shy of creating an ominous and possibly threatening type of mood. Their first album "Barnburner" mostly succeeded because of the complete dedication to that, with some small help from a muddied and nearly indecipherable vocal sound/approach. With their follow "Rub", they dropped some of the overwhelming sleaze in favor of a much stronger and bass heavy lumber. The drumming in particular was massive sounding. Aside from some segues through, "Rub" seemed slightly more focused on overpowering the listener than creeping. The vocals had also moved away from the psychotic slurred Yow-ish style as well, giving hints of a band moving towards being a more complete rock'n'roll machine… well a noisy one at least. With that, "Pushover" seems to draw upon just about every past aspect of the band in a much more subtle way. The move towards a riff-centric unit and one that is focused more so on musicianship than shock has fully taken place on this album. There is no need to steam roll through with an exaggerated production when the songs themselves can create that type of necessary power. As far as overall style goes, the band isn't doing anything entirely different on the album. It’s just honed in and the result is another step forward. Good band, good album. This is the European vinyl version, released by the French Rejuvenation Records. White/red splatter vinyl in stylish sleeve with printed inner sleeve.

PANZRAM / SHOPPERS Split 7"
(Feeble Minds/IFB Records)
Panzram and Shoppers come together for a noisy rock/punk parade on this little platter. Syracuse NY’s Shoppers play the catchiest noise drenched punk you’ve ever heard, totally drawing you in with riffs that just remain in your head for days. All that backed up by great vocal work – haunting and full of attitude. Panzram returns from Ft. Myers, Florida to dish out another dose of mean and ugly non-traditional HC laced with hints of post-punk. If bands like Pollution, Walls, and Drugs of Faith are your thing, you will be right at home with Panzram’s offerings. Black vinyl in 2 color silkscreened sleeve. Limited edition of 200 copies.

SCUL HAZZARDS "Landlord" LP 12€
(Rejuvenation Records/Whosbrain? Records)
Scul Hazzards are a deconstructionist rock band from Brisbane, Australia who combine elements of noise, math and indie rock to create aggressive and relentless music using fractured arrangements. Referencing the likes of The Jesus Lizard, Rapeman, (early) Sonic Youth, Swans, Birthday Party and (early) Blonde Redhead, but sounding like none of them in particular, Scul Hazzards' similarities focus on the core ideals of these bands rather than emulating their musical aesthetics. "Landlord" is the second album from Scul Hazzards and serves a more powerful blow compared to their already impressive debut album. Black vinyl in black/white sleeve with inserts. Limited edition of 500 copies.
http://sculhazzards.bandcamp.com

SHOPPERS "Silver Year" LP 15€
(Feeble Minds/Drugged Conscience)
Shoppers are a couple ladies and a guy out of Syracuse, NY that have apparently spent a lot of time spinning records from past wall of noise aficionados in the not so distant NYC. That's meant in the best of ways, as their debut record "Silver Year" is a rubble reducing blast of incredibly dense noise rock/punk. The syrupy thick doses of max effort distortion on the record are greatly reminiscent of the under appreciated noise making unit Dustdevils who on many of their records created a very similar atonal type of sound while also working hints of melody that was audible at different levels/times throughout their records. Shoppers maintain this approach for all of the eight of the tracks, not letting up for even a second. To some this may sound like it would wear thin on their patience, but Shoppers play it smart and keep the songs strictly to the rock side of things and at a pace that leaves little time grow to tired. They also do well by not acting out in a free noise type of way in the way earlier Sonic Youth would with the nearly same style of music. This is some killer stuff. Do check it out. Black vinyl in black/white sleeve with insert. Limited edition of 500 copies.

SHUB "The Snake, the Goose and the Ladder" LP 12€
(Rejuvenation Records)
Shub is a no wave/noise rock/post-punk trio from Nîmes, France. "The Snake, the Goose & the Ladder" is the band's second release and showcases their ability to combine Chicago -style noise rock à la Shellac to rugged Sonic Youth-ish no wave and the likes of The Ex and Hot Snakes are the usual suspects mentioned when talking about Shub. Quirky, groovy, rhythmically heavy, even melodic. Shub is not meant to be described in words, give the record a listen instead. This is a 2012 repress of the already sold out 2008 pressing. Four different colour choices of vinyl and four different choices of artwork, all picked up randomly. Limited edition of 300 copies.

SHUB "Fuck My Luck" LP+CD 12€
(Rejuvenation Records)
The third Shub album develops their sound, not necessarily to a new direction, but rather just tighter and better. The guitars offer more hooks than before and those hooks are the kind that leave you hanging from the ceiling. As usual, names such as Sonic Youth, The Ex, The Fall, Chinese Stars and others are brought to mind by Shub's sound, but there's no trace of blatant copying, it's a similar feeling in the approach that these bands share. Black vinyl in full colour sleeve including a CD version of the album. Limited edition of 1000 copies.

ULTRACOÏT "The Sperm EP" LP 10€
(Rejuvenation Records)
This LP, although labelled an EP, is the first album by these French delinquents. For a band that has a clearly went all in on the shock approach of the sexually offensive, the music is actually pretty rockin’ in an Unsane-if-they-were-complete-perverts -way. Despite the imagery, Ultracoït keep a good balance between letting the music kind of dictate things while still being able to dawn gleeful smiles from things like being able to interject samples of a woman reaching orgasm in the background of their low end pummel. Pretty solid noise, which is certainly not an uncommon deal from the French at this point. If you really dig porn (and of course you do!), then it’s even better! Black vinyl in full colour sleeve. Limited edition of 300 copies.

DO YOU COMPUTE "And We Are the Winners..." LP 10€
(Rejuvenation Records)
Coming from Paris and featuring former members of Belle Epoque, Do You Compute named themselves after a Drive Like Jehu song and just like their name would lead you to believe, these guys play it all jittery, driving and claustrophobic almost as well as Jehu played it. Now, some of you might scoff at that sentence, seeing as how Drive Like Jehu were and continue to be one of the most revered post-hardcore bands of all time. There have been many bands over the years who have tried and failed to emulate the urgency and raw emotion in the way those boys from San Diego did it. Do You Compute have succeeded. The 10 songs on this full-length can go from caustic, throbbing post-hardcore to distortion drenched, AmRep-style noise rock to an almost crust-n-roll barrage of machine gun riffs in a single turn. The vocals aren't screamed so much as hoarsely shouted, which makes it pretty easy to understand what everyone in the band is yelling about. While some of the songs do pull heavily from that Jehu influence, they aren't overly reliant on that one sound. You can detect everything from Jesus Lizard nihilism to the mathy aspects of Hero of a Hundred Fights to the wall-of-sound confrontation of Tragedy or His Hero is Gone. From post-metal to aargh-core to indie-thrash and everything in between. There is going to be something here for fans of any and all forms of heavy music. Black vinyl in full colour sleeve with insert. Limited edition of 500 copies.

SILENT FRONT "Dead Lake" LP+CD 10€
(Rejuvenation Records)
In a fickle underground scene made of relentless research for the sound of the next generation, the newest use for the oldest piece of gear, or the latest oddity in terms of harmonic choices, someone has chosen to express a neat and straightforward burst of rage, and to present it properly, promote it coherently and perform it impeccably. "Dead Lake" estabilishes Silent Front as one of the most promising outfits in London's underworld. They deservingly play a key role in the "family" they belong to, that cartel of heavy-avantgarde bands committing themselves to a spontaneous and passionate way of playing, recording, producing and pushing their works, aka DIY. Alex Polakowki, graphic designer and James Plotkin, mastering engineer give a taste of the creative talent involved in "Dead Lake". This is indeed a serious work, a '90s-flavoured collection of post-math-core blast: introspective and dark lyrics set up a soulful screamo driven by saturated clanky guitars and large roaring basslines, while some of the finest drum patterning heard for a while progresses over tendencially slow and low-pitched themes. It somehow brings things back to a more down-to-earth approach the listener, running fluidly, heavy, somewhat bristly, possibly Some Girls and Drive Like Jehu inspired, but wrapped in that cloudy south London bitterness. Black vinyl in beautiful full colour gatefold sleeve including a CD version of the album. Limited edition of 1000 copies.

JOE 4 "Njegov Sin" LP 12€
(Whosbrain? Records/Geenger Records/Fidel Bastro)
Joe 4 must be the band with the most Chicago-ish sound in Zagreb, Croatia. This three-piece already proved to be a noise rock powerhouse with their debut 10", "Enola Gay", drawing strong influences from genre staples such as Shellac, Tar, The Jesus Lizard, Janitor Joe and others, still managing to sound interesting and unique enough to make you want to keep spinning the vinyl on your turntable. This first full-length album by Joe 4 still retains the same rhythmically heavy and at times intricate Chicago -style sound, but with a wider range dynamics all thoughout the record and with lots more Joe 4 included in the songs. "Njegov Sin" was recorded and mixed by Steve Albini in November 2011, over the course of three days at the Oxygen Recording Studio, Italy. Everything was done in a completely analog setting and recorded directly to tape. The record was mastered by Bob Weston. Black vinyl in full colour sleeve.

ATTITUDE PROBLEM "s/t" LP 12€
(Forcefield Records)
Attitude Problem is a Philadelphia based tornado formed from the ashes of Facedowninshit joined by the maniacal vocalist of Resin and Faggot. Their debut release comes crushing with double drums, bass and whiskey soaked vocals straight from the gutter. Sounds like the whole band's been taking swampwater bong hits all summer while listening to the Black Flag catalog backwards. Add in a switch up as one of the drummers takes to the guitar, and side B blows up into a full on hardcore-got-the-boogie-blues beating. The harsh and sparse vocals help tie this hulk together for maximum clobbering. You can hear a little Man is the Bastard and a little Southern hate, like Buzzov*en. Black vinyl in screenprinted full colour sleeve.

THE CATALYST "Voyager" LP 15€
(Forcefield Records)
After nearly seven years and numerous mind-bending demos, EPs and splits, and a litany of tours criss-crossing the United States and Europe, Richmond, Virginia's best kept secret The Catalyst offer up their second full length album, "Voyager". Over two years in the making since 2009's "Swallow Your Teeth", The Catalyst offer up ten songs of noisy, mathy, spacey, heavy, feedback-soaked music. Still channeling a wide range of hardcore, punk, grunge, noise rock, and sludge influences and not afraid to show their love for Nirvana, Fugazi, Sonic Youth, The Jesus Lizard, Born Against, Breather Resist, and Today is the Day and most of the Amphetamine Reptile back catalog, "Voyager" displays the band's creative prowess and power fully matured and realized. Definitely worth the wait and highly recommended. Orange vinyl in full colour gatefold sleeve with digital download coupon.

COUGH / THE WOUNDED KINGS "An Introduction to the Black Arts" Split LP 15€
(Forcefield Records)
Two very different brands of doom come together on this split, which has one song each from UK occult doom heathens The Wounded Kings (who traffic in a more traditional old school sound), and Richmond, VA sludge metal bruisers Cough, who deliver more of their psychedelic, Southern sludge, each song around twenty minutes. Looking this over, it might seem like an unlikely match up pairing traditional doomsters like The Wounded Kings with the punishing magma crush of a band like Cough, but each side ends up complimenting the other pretty well and both songs are pretty fucking amazing... Dropping their first new material since the release of their Relapse debut "Ritual Abuse", Cough are back with "The Gates of Madness", which sounds very similar to the acid sludge that they delivered on the album. It opens with massive suspended downtuned chords and gong-like concussive strikes that reverberate throughout a massive cavernous expanse, unleashing this bleak, abstract ritual-like ambience for several minutes. Finally, the band crashes in with lumbering slow motion drums that are spaced out and drenched in reverb, the intense shrieking vokills echoing through the depths, monstrous doom riffage slipping into gargantuan drone-chug; then about halfway through, the vocals change into something entirely different, a melodic drugged croon sort of reminiscent of Jus from Electric Wizard, all swaddled in reverb and echo, and the guitars begin to spin out some killer dramatic leads, shifting into fuzz-drenched wah-wah soloing that soars above the narcotized sludge. It's fucking killer, the music gradually slowing down, becoming more and more sorrowful and funereal, before making its way back into the grueling skeletal dirge that the band started with, the vocals once again shrieking and howling, finally drifting off into a sea of feedback hum and decaying drum eruptions. Once we flip over to The Wounded Kings' side, you're instantly sucked into the intoxicating doom of "Curse of Chains", a slow motion whorl of muffled organs and shimmering cymbals introducing the song, and then the guitars descend with a killer ominous Sabbathian riff, then the entire band crashes in and get underway with this creepy, witchy doom jam, the organs and Mellotron hovering over the creeping doom laced with an occult 70s vibe, swirling guitar fx and wah whirl overhead, and when the vocals finally come in, they're this tremulous croon, a rich baritone reminiscent of Peter Murphy. The song eventually falls away into a stretch of shimmery organ drone and drifting dark psych ambience for a moment, then the drums slowly fade back in and the band drops back in to the lumbering psychedelic slowmo prog, growing more majestic towards the end, until everything drops out once again and a piano ends the song with a sad, brooding little coda. Heavy black vinyl in gatefold sleeve. Limited edition of 1500 copies.

LORD BY FIRE "s/t" 7"
(Forcefield Records)
From Richmond, VA and formerly known as simply Sword (whose sole release was titled "Lord by Fire"), Lord by Fire's debut under their new name is this self-titled 7" on Forcefield Records. With just two tracks in 10 minutes it's over all too soon, but the band's approach to dark, dingy, “doomy” rock/metal remains intact with the added bonus of an absolutely awesome recording that's loaded with warm, natural tones and plenty of crisp breathing room that allows all of the subtle intricacies of the elements' textures to shine through perfectly. Expect hoarse, strained shouts over an assortment of pounding midpaced power chords; choppy, chugging rhythms; sludgy, textured grooves; and occasional layers of searing feedback. It's neither too rocked out nor too overly aggressive and in your face, and that balance works out quite nicely for the end result. Black vinyl in full colour sleeve. Limited edition of 500 copies.

PANZRAM "Reform" 10" 10€
(IFB Records)
This Florida band pays tribute to one of the world's great sociopaths, the legendary Carl Panzram, and makes you wonder why more bands don't turn to the Great Destroyer for inspiration. The hideous din that Panzram whip up on the twenty-two minute 10" "Reform" (the title yet another reference to CP's world-hating philosophy) is as ugly and skull-cracking as possible, a hybrid of lopsided hardcore punk and brutal noise rock possessed by frantic percussion and tons of dissonance created by their cavernous wind-tunnel production, with screaming howls that border on black metal style shrieking. As this record spins, one can hear bits of early Die Kreuzen in here as well as strains of the heaviest of the Am Rep stable, some NYC pigfuck stench and very subtle strains of black blast. The whole fucking EP is a rager, but some of the standout tracks include opener "Bad Teeth" with it's seething brutal bludgeon, the crawling bad feelings of "Bobby Fuller", and the grueling noise dirge "The Lie". Despite all of the references listed out, these guys are a little harder to pin down, and are definitely doing their own thing... this should be right on your list if you've got a taste for the discordant, off-kilter dark hardcore that's been coming out on Iron Lung lately. Black vinyl in special hand-screened and hand made sleeve.

SOURVEIN / COFFINS Split 7"
(Forcefield Records)
Ultra heavy Japanese death-sludge warriors Coffins team up with southern sludge core legends Sourvein to deliver new, exclusive songs on this limited edition 7" from Forcefield. First up, Sourvein unfurl the filthy, feedback-infested deathcrawl of "Dingy Haunt", a blooze-addled dirge that sounds, as always, like a more cancerous and tar-covered version of Eyehategod's swampy doom-crust. From lurching Sabbathian swing to mutated hardcore slog to putrid punk corrupted by bayou gas, Sourvein drag themselves (and the listener) through a mile of muck, with T-Roy's distinct, tattered yowl guiding the way. On their side, Coffins bring us "Axes of Vengeance", a new battering-ram of a song forged out of their slow-motion death metal assault. Uchino belches out a cautionary tale of warfare and revenge painted in glistening viscera and cracked-open skulls, while the painfully slow doom-death creeps forward on tank treads, the ultra-torpid downtuned crush encased in concrete and conjuring similar agonies as Autopsy or Winter at their absolute heaviest. Total devastation... Black vinyl in black/white sleeve with insert.

TOURNAMENT "Years Old" LP 12€
(Forcefield Records)
The late 80s/early 90s indie noise rock is making a comeback and Tournament have the love for bands like Jesus Lizard, Surgery and Helmet with a bit of Sabbath -like groove moments thrown in just to make it all the more of a kick ass sound. Also if you remember bands like Green Magnet School, Guzzard and Janitor Joe then you got a very good cross reference on what this band is doing; the manic guitar, vocals just spewing out anger and the drums and bass just looking to be loud, dirty and nasty. This band would have been Sub Pop, Touch and Go or SST golden boys back in the day. This release reminds you of when rock bands cared about making creative forward thinking songs that were not 3:30 4/4 beat based commerical fodder. Black 180g vinyl in special die-cut sleeve with printed inner sleeve and digital download coupon.

WINDHAND "s/t" LP 15€
(Forcefield Records)
From Richmond, VA comes the self-titled full-length debut from Windhand (featuring ex-members of Facedowninshit and Alabama Thunderpussy). This album should be put right up there with Electric Wizard in terms of just fucking superb, unstoppable doom. The songs range from five to 10+ minutes and are all powerfully ominous, heavy as hell, and aside from some droning, fuzzed-out leads they don't really mess around with that rocked out stuff either. Just top-notch slow, pulsing riffs in that classic, Sabbath -influenced vein (as opposed to more of a death/doom leaning) and killer singing that has a darker, more somber feeling than most acts of this nature (and adds some nice melody, too). Windhand take an existing approach and perfect every single aspect of it, which results in an excellent sense of atmosphere all around. The recording is nice and thick with just the right amount of density and grit, the vocals are mixed deep in against the instruments… everything about this is just dead on. Third press coming on 180g white vinyl with purple haze in gatefold sleeve with screenprinted insert.

MEAT MIST "Smut" LP 15€
(XO Press)
Right out of Kansas City comes Meat Mist, who with their "Bleak Bisque" demo raised some eyebrows. While KC has had a rich musical history, it's probably not known as a hot bed for the type of trashy noise that Meat Mist are pushing with their debut LP "Smut". Released through their own label XO Press, "Smut" continues exactly with what they showed everyone on their demo and that's good old fashioned violent blasts of noise rock. The LP probably has a tiny bit better production qualities than the demo, but not nearly enough to risk dragging this thing out of the distorted sleazy depths in which it lovingly calls home. There is a notable punk undercurrent going on with their sound, if you can cut through all the clashing noise, that helps give them a jolting effectiveness of having fourteen tracks that are fired off in rapid succession. There is very little time to gather ones thoughts as Meat Mist move from one disturbing blast of mangled noise to the next…sometimes almost seemingly cutting off prematurely, yet again something that works to their advantage. The trashy sounding nature of the recording and the way in which it is crammed together nearly feels as if you're listening to a frantically played live set in some dingy basement somewhere, allowing it to have a very raw aesthetic. Folks who love the near indecipherable brutality and atonal noise pummel of bands like Rusted Shut and The New Flesh will undoubtedly find something to like about Meat Mist. These fellas are legit. Black vinyl in black/white sleeve with black/white inserts.

MEAT MIST / WHITE SLAVE Split 7"

Split 7" between two young Kansas City bands. White Slave is full-on psychotic tear-you-limb-from-limb noisy hardcore with seriously distressed vocals. KEPONE "s/t" LP 12€
(Modern City Records)
Kepone was a band from Richmond, VA in the mid-90s who released a bunch of 7"s on labels such as Alternative Tentacles and three albums on Quarterstick Records. They often shared the bill with several AmRep luminaries such as Unsane, Helmet, Cows, Guzzard etc., although their sound could be more easier coined as post-hardcore instead of noise rock. Despite their sound being deceptively simple, describing Kepone is nevertheless a bit of a tricky task. They're like some sort of scratchy, pulsing, semi-funky amalgam that takes in Fugazi, NoMeansNo and the Big Boys. The rhythm section is locked down to inhuman levels of tightness while the guitars thrust and jerk with a sound like mallets hitting sheet metal. Star of the show, though, is frontman Michael Bishop. Allegedly the son of a preacher (man), his delivery is by turns keening and hectoring, a belligerent caterwaul one moment and sweetly melodic the next – a range of styles, voices and deliveries you can easily imagine being shaped by a childhood gazing up at the pulpit while tales of fire, brimstone, betrayal and redemption are boomed forth. Kepone probably passed a lot of people by first time around, and to be honest that's a bit of a sorry fact. This album's now some 15 years old, but if no-one told you then you'd hardly guess - it's a rare, shining treat so snag yourself a copy now or forever hang your sorry head in shame. This is the first vinyl pressing of Kepone's third and final album. Clear vinyl in special silkscreened die-cut sleeve coming in various colours and including inserts.

The stoner-ish riffs blend perfectly together with the hip-displacing-boogie-woogie grooves, the guitar solos have been exhumed from Ron Asheton's grave and the vocalist sounds like he's been emptying gallons of whiskey while waiting for you to kneel behind the glory hole. In short, Chestburster are one of the best rock bands in Finland at the moment. Black vinyl in full colour sleeve with lyrics insert, sticker and other surprises. Limited edition of 200 copies.

MEAT MIST / MORSE Split Tape
(Pain Frites Records)
Split tape between Meat Mist from Kansas City and Morse from Lyon, France. The Missouri three-piece blast through five tracks of their scuzzed out noise rock pulling no punches in order to deliver the filthiest, most distorted, feedbacking and bowel-warm heap of noise possible. Morse retain a more subtle approach with their post-punk/no wave sound. Four tracks of dissonant anti-pop. Hand painted tapes in partially hand painted sleeve with inserts.

BREMEN "s/t" 2LP 18€
(Skrammel Records)
Bremen is a Swedish duo consisting of members from such bands as Totalitär and Brainbombs among others, yet Bremen is something completely different. This double-album draws influences from minimalism, kraut rock, experimental music and space rock, the spectrum of moods ranging from laid back, almost jazzy improvisations to droney psychedelia to noisy space rock jams. Definitely not the sort of record you'd expect from these guys, but in a way it also makes perfect sense. Two black vinyls in black/white gatefold sleeve.

BILLY BAO "Buildings from Bilbao" LP 15€
(Burka for Everybody/Terminal Picnic)
If rock'n'roll was the sound of the city, then Billy Bao are the sound of the unemployment line, the empty backyards and the dark hidden places of that city. Concrete interferences provide a backdrop that alludes to the class war that emerged in Bilbao. After some line up changes, Billy Bao gives sound to this landscape by exceeding horizontally the nihilistic and individualistic discourse of noise: with 9ice, Flipper, Bobby Sox, an unstable afrobeat, the visceral freak outs of Red Krayola and distorted blues, as if Jimi Hendrix jammed with Throbbing Gristle, while Peter Brötzmann plays with his sax in the toilet. Black vinyl in full colour gatefold sleeve with full colour printed inner sleeve. Limited edition of 500 copies.

BIRTH "s/t" LP 13€
(Dead Beat Records)
Devastatingly punishing debut here from Chicago dirtbags Birth! Bathed in the same filth as Brainbombs, Drunks With Guns, Flipper and Big Black; Birth take cro-magnon riffs and shred 'em to bits as the sky collapses around them and they're buried in a pile of smoldering barbed wire. Think heavy, sludgey as fuck, proto-punk that sounds like the Electric Eeels covering the Stooges using Sabbath's gear if it were stolen from a scrap yard and made out of knives. Brutally harsh landscapes where beating the shit out of your instruments is therapy and masochism is fun. Black vinyl in full colour sleeve.

CELLOS "Bomb Shelter" MLP 13€
(Dead Beat Records)
Every once in a while a band will come out of nowhere and just flat out knock you on your ass. Cellos are definitely one of those bands. Stewing in the same sludgey, riff infected cesspool as mid to late 90's heavy hitters like Karp, Unwound, Godheadsilo and Unsane; this Windsor, Ontario three-piece write some of the most punishingly awesome tunes you'll ever hear. This is harsh, destructive music where warm, fuzzy riffs are king and loud, noisy feedback is lauded as they melt, slice, and demolish each song into acute ear fucking precision. Nods to the Melvins and Black Sabbath are pretty much essential as foundational purveyors in the genre. And Cellos fit right in with the above mentioned artists as a band that's pushing the boundaries of extremely heavy music, one crudely bashed low-end hit at a time. Black vinyl in full colour sleeve.

THE DAILY VOID "Identification Code: 5271-4984953784-06564" LP 13€
(Dead Beat Records)
In many ways the song ("You've Been Erased") that opens this debut full length effort by Chicago's abrasive garage combo The Daily Void is reminiscent of some of the old Butthole Surfers. It's got that jagged edge, you know? You can tell there is great rock'n'roll looming somewhere in this well of derangement, but by choice the makers have opted for marching at the beat of their own drummer. Read: be strident, loud and not all that easy going. So let's just hope that The Daily Void never finds commercial success in the tragic way that the Butthole Surfers have. The Daily Voids was formed from the ashes of the late The Functional Blackouts (guitarists Mac Blackout and Dr. Filth and Rob Karlic). Slightly more angular, difficult, disordered and destructive than the music of its predecessors, The Daily Void create the kind of nihilistic garage noise/punk rock that is bound to annoy the fuck out of anyone not used to these types. They are an affable quartet obsessed with monochromatic negativity, whose songs constantly walk the very fine line between actual organized but in your face brash punk rock music and destructive noise rock. The whole thing has during its most remarkable moments lower levels of sheer noise fuckery on the side. It's the whole Sonic Youth guitar noise principle, except played with pure contempt for artistic ambition and with visceral fury. "Devil's Gold Window" and "The Man with Out a Face" both are at times angular and at others straight ahead rockers built around one-to-two-note guitar ideas. The Daily Void are by no means an easy treat. It doesn't go down like hot chocolate on a December night. It's more like getting stabbed with a broken bottle right before midnight on the 25th. Black vinyl in black/white sleeve with black/white insert.

TORCHE "Harmonslaught" 7"
(Amnesian Records)
Fuck yes, "Power from Hell"!!! Well, not exactly even though the artwork of this new Torche 7" pays homage to the Onslaught classic and the return of the much missed bomb-string could easily be described as power from hell. The title track goes back to the early Torche days and even the Floor days by delivering a pummeling bomb-string feast backed up by the always hook-y melodies. The second track, "Rock'n'Roll Mantasy" is just that, a sweaty trademark Torche rocker which never manage to disappoint. Black vinyl in black/white/red sleeve. Limited edition of 1000 copies.

SOKEA PISTE "Välikäsi" LP 12€
(Karkia Mistika Records/Tuska & Ahdistus)
Sokea Piste have been at it since 2008 and have previously released one 7" and one 12", which were favorably received in the punk scene and beyond. Comparisons to a wide variety of bands on the noisier and gloomier side of punk have been thrown around to describe their sound, though as per usual all this is better taken with a grain of salt. With their new album "Välikäsi" they have dropped the pace a notch or two while retaining their energy and intensity levels. The lyrics remain depressingly accurate snapshots of a sick world we live in, where free market capitalism reigns supreme at the cost of immense human suffering, mass marketed goods and ideals, loss of individuality and brutal competition. Black vinyl in full colour sleeve with black/white printed inner sleeve.

Australia's Useless Children were born amid the wave of hectic speed-induced mayhem that marked the Melbourne punk scene in early 2008 and produced their first EP shortly afterwards. ROUGH ROPE / LOST COVES Split LP 15€
(Saw Her Ghost Records)
Brooklyn, New York's Lost Coves and Chattanooga, Tennessee's Rough Rope split a platter of vinyl to bring you brand new tracks you can split yer pants to. Lost Coves spiral even further out with four psychedelic adventures that mix disorienting walls of sound tied together with heartfelt and finely tuned vocals. The duo have created their heaviest opus yet. Speaking of heavy (bordering on obnoxious), Rough Rope's vinyl debut features six tracks of raucous noise rock that ranges from screaming three chord blasts to post punk instrumental juggernauts. Channeling odd rock greats like Jesus Lizard, Melvins, Pissed Jeans, and a lot of the Amphetamine Reptile roster, one thing is true above all - these dudes are Party Animals. Each band has their own cover for this package, both are included. Black vinyl is limited to 200 copies out of 300 copies in total. Also included is a digital download card.

BLACKLISTERS "s/t" LP 15€
(Brew Records)
To be blacklisted means to go about without any recognition. Well, not for long. Support slots for Rolo Tomassi, Chickenhawk, Melt Banana and being picked to play the Reading and Leeds Festivals has helped Blacklisters quickly establish themselves as a formidable live act through aggressive, confrontational performances riddled with dark humour. Their first full-length release is their heaviest and most visceral collection of songs to date, and announces the band's potential as a major force in underground rock music. From the moment album opener "Clubfoot by Kasabian" kicks in and throughout the next forty minutes or so that follows, "BLKLSTRS" is an unrelenting, ferocious, and somewhat anarchic tour de force. Dante Beesley's sharp guitar playing is forever in battle with Billy Mason-Wood's terrifying and in-your-face vocals. Combined with Own Griffiths' thunderous bass lines and Alistair Stobbart's full-throttle drumming, the album drives on at neck-break speed. Pointing towards Leeds-counterparts Pulled Apart by Horses, tracks such as "Swords", "Mouthpeace" and "Trickfuck" are real standouts. Album closer "Shush" is a fitting way to sign off. Maybe it is a demand to the people? Shush, be quiet, listen to us! It won’t be long before Blacklisters get the recognition they deserve. Red vinyl in full colour sleeve with printed full colour inner sleeve and digital download coupon.

DARK CASTLE "Surrender to All Life Beyond Form" LP 15€
(Brutal Panda Records)
Comprised of vocalist/guitarist Stevie Floyd and drummer Rob Shaffer, Florida's Dark Castle is often referred to as doom metal's version of The White Stripes. The male/female duo formed in the mid-'00s, first attracting the attention of the doom/sludge metal underground with their 2008 debut album "Spirited Migration". While among the heaviest groups in America, Dark Castle doesn't achieve this distinction with the elongated, time-stretching tracks of other doom bands — theirs are shorter, denser, more punishing and vitriolic songs that take in a wide variety of influences, from noise, drone, prog and even traditional Eastern music. Their live shows amaze crowds shocked by how two individuals alone could conjure such colossal, earth-rumbling heaviness. With "Surrender to All Life Beyond Form", Dark Castle at last properly captures their live energy on record. The album was produced and recorded by Sanford Parker in Steve Albini's Electrical Audio studio, and will be recognized not only the band's most crushing work yet, but as their most experimental and progressive as well. A dark, visceral exercise in focused sonic devastation, it features guest appearances from Mike Scheidt of Yob, Blake Judd of Nachtmystium, Nate Hall of U.S. Christmas and Parker himself. Second pressing on blood red vinyl in full colour gatefold sleeve with a 12-page 11"x11" booklet displaying the stunning artwork of Stevie Floyd. Limited edition of 300 copies.

HORSEBACK "On the Eclipse" 7"
(Brutal Panda Records)
With the "On the Eclipse" EP, Horseback mastermind Jenks Miller delivers us two brand new tracks of dark, ethereal beauty. "On the Eclipse" mixes kraut rock with acoustic pop while "Broken Orb" epitomizes the droney ambience that Horseback orchestrate so well. The stunning artwork, created by renowned artist Justin Bartlett, captures the eerie atmospherics of the songs. White vinyl (limited to 350 copies out of 500 copies in total) in black/white sleeve, including a custom Horseback vinyl cleaning cloth.

JAVELINA "Beasts Among Sheep" LP 15€
(Brutal Panda Records)
On the heels of their crushing 2008 self-titled Translation Loss Records debut, Philadelphia's Javelina have outdone themselves and furthered expanded the aural soundscape of brutal and sludgey music with their devastating sophomore release "Beasts Among Sheep"! This time around, Javelina enlisted the talents of Sanford Parker (Minsk, Pelican, Nachtmystium) to help produce the brutality that is "Beasts Among Sheep". Embodying the massive sludgy nature of Buzzov*en and Eyehategod with the raw punk intensity of His Hero is Gone and the straightforward nature of High on Fire help made "Beasts Among Sheep" one of the most aggressive and death-defying albums of 2009! Black vinyl (limited to 300 copies out of 500 copies in total) in full colour sleeve with 11"x17" poster insert.

LADDER DEVILS "Nowhere Plans" LP 15€
(Brutal Panda Records)
This is the debut full-length from Philadelphia noise rockers Ladder Devils, previously best known from their 3-way split LP with Fight Amp and Kowloon Walled City. The construction of "Nowhere Plans" is a little strange: the last five of the nine tracks appeared on their 2010 EP, "Forget English". Ladder Devils later added four new songs in a Thanksgiving 2011 recording session and the sum and total became "Nowhere Plans". The result is schizophrenic ― the second half of the record has a much looser, rolling, rollicking quality to it, messier, but also more relaxed. The first half of the album is tighter, but also tenser, more tightly wound. The production matches the patchwork identity, sometimes feeling rushed and haphazard, at other moments sounding achingly precise. But even at their most chill, Ladder Devils are a clattering, rapid bundle of nerves. There's desperation in the riffs and pace of the album, as though they were falling over themselves in a frantic attempt to blow off some steam. The vocals sound as though they're being wadded up and flung, as though getting the noise out and away will provide some kind of relief, release some terrible pressure. Recommended for fans of Young Widows, Liars and Nirvana. Blue vinyl (limited to 400 copies out of 500 copies in total) in black/white/silver sleeve with a lyrics insert.

MEGASUS "Menace of the Universe" 5"
(Brutal Panda Records)
At just over five and a half minutes long, the gorgeously packaged "Menace of the Universe" 5" from Providence, Rhode Island, bash and thrashers Megasus is over almost before it starts. Where their 2009 20 Buck Spin self-titled full-length offered a few minutes here and there of respite, on such a small vinyl, there's barely time for the songs themselves, let alone a breather, so you're in, you're out, all of a sudden you have a black eye, and that's it. The two songs, released via Brutal Panda Records, run 2:48 and 2:46, respectively. "Menace of the Universe" is a quick kick in the ass, guitarist Ryan Lesser's tone reminding of Entombed and drummer Brian Gibson (also known from Load Records favourites Lightning Bolt) hitting a bright, punkish snare to accent the riff. Jason Kendall's vocals are far back and similarly effected here as they were on the self-titled, but he screams maniacally on the first track, and is no less appropriate in doing so than he is the subtle, sub-psychedelic melody he throws in later on before Lesser's solo brings the song to a close. Bassist Paul Lyons has more of a role to play on "Damned Hammer", which is slower (still not as slow as some of the "Megasus" material was) and offers more room for him to run counter to Lesser's riffing. The Motörhead aspect of "Menace of the Universe" is all but gone from "Damned Hammer", and Megasus show more of their doom side in the shorter track, still managing to keep the immediacy of the a-side, just cutting the pace. Black 5" vinyl in special die-cut, six-panel sleeve including a silk-screened art print signed and numbered by Ryan Lesser. Limited edition of 500 copies.
http://megasus.bandcamp.com

NORSKA "s/t" LP 15€
(Brutal Panda Records)
Portland, Oregon doom/sludge titans Norska (featuring Aaron Rieseberg from Yob) unleash their mind-altering debut release. The 5 song, 40 minute eponymous LP was recorded by Adam Bradley Pike (Black Elk, Red Fang) at Toadhouse Studios in Portland, OR. Mixing heavy, meditative riffs and a thundering rhythm section with psychedelic flourishes, Norska prove that they are true masters of their craft. For fans of Yob, Electric Wizard and High on Fire. Black vinyl (limited to 300 copies out of 500 copies in total) in full colour sleeve with lyrics insert.

CD:

CASTROVALVA "You're Not in Hell, You're in Purgatory My Friend" CD
(Brew Records)
The audio equivalent of drunken headspins, Castrovalva have come back to taunt us with just under thirty minutes of chaotic electro rock which sounds like it was recorded by demented imps who have looted an instrument store. In short, it’s bloody brilliant. Fuzz heavy basslines and sci-fi guitar screeching are accompanied by frantically delivered lyrics which touch upon subjects such as friends, family, fatherhood and broken relationships. Album highlights include "Donut", a stomping, dubstep infused banger, "The Cavalry"; which is The Melvins covering Bloc Party and "I am the Golden Widow" which is what Fleet Foxes would sound like if they listened to more Dillinger Escape Plan. If the aforementioned analysis sounds a bit all over the place, it's because it's almost impossible to pin this bugger down to explain what the hell it is exactly, and that's a rare and beautiful thing.

HUMANFLY "Awesome Science" CD
(Brew Records)
As a band that has been in existence for close to 12 years now, Humanfly are somewhat of an institution in the UK. As purveyors of the mighty 'riff' they are without doubt one of the best. Humanfly's previous 3 albums saw them gradually edge away from their original fast, hardcore, DIY punk sound through to post-metal, now taking them to their current form which in the case of new album "Awesome Science" is a massive prog beast. There's been a shift in dynamics which may come as a surprise to many who were used to the 'quiet, loud, even louder' formula that worked so well. "Awesome Science" is very much and in every sense, shape and form a prog album. Humanfly have crafted an astonishing record that moves, shifts and at certain moments elevates the listener leaving them gobsmacked by the sheer musicianship on display. Think King Crimson meets The Mars Volta and you are almost there.

RADIOPUHELIMET "K.O." LP 15€
(Svart Records)
"K.O." is the second full-length by Radiopuhelimet, the household name of quirky Finnish rock defying strict categorization, at times sounding like a direct descendent of The Stooges or even MC5 and at times like a band that could easily have been a part of the Amphetamine Reptile roster back in the 90s. "K.O.", released in 1990 by Spirit, contains some of the sharpest guitar sounds in Finnish music history and the entire album is a feast of ultra-tight, garage-y, sharp edged noisy rock'n'roll . The album has been remastered by Pentti Dassum and the black vinyl is housed in a gatefold sleeve.

"Pian, Pian" is the third full-length by Radiopuhelimet, the household name of quirky Finnish rock defying strict categorization, at times sounding like a direct descendent of The Stooges or even MC5 and at times like a band that could easily have been a part of the Amphetamine Reptile roster back in the 90s. "Pian, Pian", released in 1991 by Spirit, marked a darker sound for the band which may have caught mixed reactions among the listeners, but remains an important step in the band's career and certainly a milestone in Finnish noisy rock'n'roll music. The album has been remastered by Pentti Dassum and the black vinyl is housed in a gatefold sleeve.

SINK "The Holy Testament 2" LP 15€
(Svart Records)
For over 10 years Sink has been confusing the black metal, drone and sludge scene. The sound of the band exists somewhere between drone, black metal and dark ambient with a strong presence of experimentation and occasional classical and choral influences. They have travelled the path from nihilistic psych-sludge of their early days to the highly acclaimed "The Process" which was a more detailed and diverse black-drone record. Their pace is accelerating with the last two song EP and a bizarre short film to accompany it. Now it's time for a new incarnation with a new two part opus "The Holy Testament". This time the music is more towards psychedelic black metal with plenty of diversity in soundscapes and instrumentation. Their sometimes hostile and mania-driven performances are cathartic and bizarre, uncommon in this genre of static totems. Black vinyl in gatefold sleeve. Limited edition of 500 copies.

An amalgam of classic rhythm-based hardcore and slight sludge metal influences, the band released "IIII" as a self-financed tape in 2011, now reissued on black vinyl, wrapped in gatefold covers and limited to 400 copies.

PIGS "You Ruin Everything" LP 15€
(Solar Flare Records)
When Unsane bassist Dave Curran started writing songs on guitar with drummer Jim Paradise (Player's Club, Freshkills, Hellno) the name they tossed out for their fledgling project was simple: Pigs. "We figured it was short enough that press and promoters couldn't fuck it up." Producer Andrew Schneider (Slughog, Barbaro) was invited to fill-in on bass for a couple of shows and, much to their delight, has refused to leave. The sound? Pigs sound like the last forty-five minutes of that interminable haul from Portland to San Francisco when both patience and air conditioning are long gone; like a petty, early-morning drunken argument in a gravel parking lot about the stupid, impossible math of how to divide forty-one dollars three ways; like when the left rear bearing on the van that's been squealing and then grinding for days finally gets hot enough to weld itself into the axle and the ancient Detroit Deathtrap grates to a final, shuddering halt. Pigs sound like three guys who have played countless shows in many bands for a couple of decades in several dozen countries and still can't leave it alone. Second pressing on black vinyl in full colour sleeve, limited to 200 copies.

THE CATALYST / AUSSITÔT MORT Split 7"
(Sieve and Sand Records / Aïnu Records / Moment of Collapse Records)
This split 7" features a new song from Caen, France's Aussitôt Mort and two new songs by Richmond, Virginia's The Catalyst. On the first side of the split is Aussitôt Mort, who offer up one new song that shows the band continuing where they left off on their "Nagykanizsa" LP, released back in February of 2012. "La Bourse ou la Vie" is a single six minute long song of epic and tense sounding screamo tinged post hardcore. The second side of the split features two new songs by The Catalyst, continuing with their patented style of noisy, mathy, spacey, heavy, feedback-soaked music. The Catalyst channel a wide range of hardcore, punk, grunge, noise rock, and sludge influences and are not afraid to show their love for Nirvana, Fugazi, Sonic Youth, The Jesus Lizard, Born Against, Breather Resist, and Today is the Day. Green vinyl in special fold-out sleeve.

VINYYLIT:

FUN "1/3" 7"
(Cut Half Records/Rejuvenation Records/Tenzenmen)
They've shared stages with The Jesus Lizard, Nomeansno, Polvo and Deerhoof. They've recorded their second album, "Zu-Pa!" at Steve Albini's Electrical Audio, with the great man at the helm; all of which should inform as to the level of intensity contained within these grooves, a mean alcohol fuelled journey through the underbelly of Helsinki's bars, the band hutling forward through an array of genres all underpinned by a looping bass; all around shards of guitar cascade with crashing cymbals, before a fragmented breakdown which propels in the other direction, eventually through the alcohol haze Fun recall which song they had begun and re-focus, by which time it's all over… a gloriously chaotic hedonistic maelstrom that the US version of Fun would run a mile from. Black vinyl in full colour sleeve with digital download coupon.

FUN "New 13" LP 12€
(Cut Half Records)
The long-awaited third full length from the loudest and ugliest Finnish noise rockers. 11 songs of heavy and twisted punk/indie/noise rock mayhem that your mom would hate and dad would probably hate, too. We love it. If you like Jesus Lizard, Minutemen, Deep Turtle and other good bands then Fun is your new best band in the world. Black vinyl in full colour sleeve with printed inner sleeve and digital download coupon.

ART OF BURNING WATER "Head of the Tempest" LP 12€
(SuperFi Records/Hate Life)
Art of Burning Water were born out of the 'white flats' of Hanwell and the pre-gentrified homes of Hammersmith in West London in 2001. The sound of suburban alienation and misfit isolation forged an awkward visceral sound that was too punk for the metallers, too noisy for the arthouse crowd and too weird for seemingly everyone else. AoBW continue to plough their own furrow despite personal injury and often chronic disorganisation. with self-promotion taking a back seat to the importance of sound creation to combat the often ugly hardships of everyday living. Like Slayer gone sludge, AoBW channel the prime noise-rock of vintage Zeni Geva and Godflesh with the more complex rhythmical riff obsessions of the Melvins, Keelhaul and mid-period Voivod. In saying that however, AoBW also adhere to the original punk philosophy of 'anything goes'. There are no restrictions. Punk isn't about Discharge (as good as they were and are), studded belts and crusty bum flaps. Punk is the heart to tell the narrow minded to get fucked. "Head of the Tempest" is the difficult second album following a lengthy post-production period, continuing the tightly-wound diamond-hard songwriting skills from the early days. Black vinyl in black/white sleeve. Limited edition of 300 copies.

All subject to opinion of course. Black vinyl in black/blue sleeve. Limited edition of 520 copies.

SNOWBLOOD "s/t" 2LP 16€
(SuperFi Records)
This is a passionate scream of an album. Sounds creep up on you, slamming into your cranium like a pickaxe. Hints of Mogwai and Spiritualized (the early Spiritualized, before they became pop stars with gospel choirs, Abbey Road EPs and "Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space") peek out at every turn, making it clear what kind of an audience this band are going for. These guys don't want mainstream acceptance, they want to do everything on their own terms. This is a sinuous, slow-burning, sexy album that takes its time to reveal hidden depths, drawing you further in with each listen, just as every good album should. It comes as no surprise to learn that the piece was produced in isolation (somewhere in The Scottish Highlands). This album has a heart but it is a cold, unforgiving, vengeful beast that will either kiss you or kill you. This marks the third and final album by Snowblood. Two black vinyls in beautiful gatefold sleeve with insert. Limited edition of 500 copies.

KASETIT:

CHESTBURSTER "Born to Disappoint" Tape
(Brownhill Mafia)
"Born to Disappoint" is the missing link in the Chestburster discography, recorded in the summer of 2011 and dating somewhere between the Chestburster/Stasi split 7" and the "Secret Sex Tape". Six tracks in 22 minutes and in spite of the title, you will be served the familiar pummeling by this power trio. Filthy riff-worship, sluggish vocal delivery and high-energy yet low-fidelity rhythm section. No doubt these cats would love you to hate their guts. Green tape in full colour sleeve with lyrics insert. Limited edition of 150 copies.

Päivitys 26.3.2013

VINYYLIT:

MULTICULT "s/t" LP 15€
(Multicult)
Strong debut album by the Baltimore trio Multicult. Dirty, rhythmically heavy noise rock having that gritty garage-y vibe all throughout, but also maintaining a clear emphasis on actual song structures, reminiscent of the sound once so prominently connected with the names Amphetamine Reptile and Touch & Go. Multicult has been compared to such bands as Big Black, early Unsane, Brainbombs, Birthday Party and Clockcleaner, so if any of those names ring a bell, check out Multicult. Black vinyl in red "disco" sleeve. Limited edition of 300 copies.
http://multicult.bandcamp.com

MULTICULT "Spaces Tangled" LP 15€
(Sleeping Giant Glossolalia)
The second album for Baltimore's Multicult following a cool single on the Amplified Noise label. "Spaces Tangled" certainly seems to capitalize on what the band laid down on that seven-inch and then some. Very cool stuff that seems to take some of the more interesting parts of the past years of Chicago. Definitely a big Albini Big Black/Rapeman vibe going on, but the bass work throughout the album and also strongly brings to mind past Chicago math-rock greats Table. The razor thinness and bass heavy bounce all point heavily to them, although Multicult seem to be more inclined to reach into abrasiveness more often rather than some of the loopy and disorienting techniques that Table played around with. People may read this and want to write the band off as yet another clone of an already well explored sound, however Multicult really show they have the chops to make it work by simply injecting some creativity into the songwriting and concurrently displaying a level of prowess that the best of the genre all seem to carry. Major leap forward from what was already an impressive single. Black vinyl in full colour sleeve including a digital download coupon.

SHAVED WOMEN "s/t" 7"
(Apop Records)
Here is the much anticipated second 7"€  from St. Louis'€™ Shaved Women. It is a harsh tale of disillusionment told in three new hope-crushing pummelers. The opening track "Anxiety" careens out the gate with desperate mania; offering the same thick, frustrated sound that earned their previous records references to Black Flag and The Jesus Lizard and continues as the second track kicks off in blistering fury. Halfway through the 7"€ , however, "Pressures" breaks down with the pace and ferocity of a whip self-flagellated. Golly, things are getting heavy, man. Long standing as a favorite live set closer and one horse-pill dose of a downer, "Adulthood" finds Shaved Women trading speed and vitriol for shades of sludge and self-loathing. It'€™s despair and self-defeat mantras cycle and redouble with heaving, head-banging repetition summoning an end to such youthfully quaint ideals like self-improvement, happiness or a future worth living. Black vinyl in black/white sleeve with xeroxed insert.

VINYYLIT:

BAXTER STOCKMAN "Punter" LP 15€
(Kult of Nihilow/Full Contact Records)
Baxter Stockman was founded in Helsinki, Finland in 2006. The aim was to form a band making harsh and strong rock-music. Over the years this collaboration of three young men has molded itself into a tight unit. Flesh has become stringy. Baxter Stockman sounds like a band, not like three musicians who just happened to wander in the same room at the same time. Previously the group has released two CD EPs and a 7" single. Baxter Stockman attacks with a mundane rage, toppling over it's prey. Rapeman at their meanest, Swans having cramps, G.G. Allin's forgotten grave… The drums are the size of a high-rise stone building. The guitar and the bass screech uncomfortably. Melodies are often based on just a couple of notes, but create a sonic world taking listener far beyond just that. The vocals range from declaratory murmurs to harrowing cries. "Punter" includes a collaboration with Umpio, mr. Pentti Dassum with his junkelectronix. This is not art for art's sake, this is simply rock'n'roll as envisioned by Baxter Stockman. "Punter" takes it's place in the continuum of abrasive music, starting from the destruction and rebuilding of punk rock, progressing toward american noise-rock and finally ending up in the Finnish underground. While Baxter Stockman respects it's predecessors, it takes a thorny path of it's own. Black vinyl in full colour sleeve.

PISSED JEANS "Hope for Men" LP 16€
(Sub Pop)
Following on the heels of their monumental "Don't Need Smoke to Make Myself Disappear" 7", Pissed Jeans drop album number 2 and their Sub Pop debut: "Hope for Men". For those who found a glimmer of the stuff on the aforementioned single, the album delivers more, and in abundance. That is to say, if classic, thick-as-glue punk bombast and Aussie sludge stoke the coals of your existence, you have found, not only your new favorite band, but a reason to get up in the morning. Since 2004 the Jeans have spent many a night playing in their hometown, no-rules hellhole, Allentown's legendary Jeff the Pigeon (RIP). Their first single, "Throbbing Organ" and album, "Shallow" (both on Parts Unknown) set many self-styled punk scholars' hearts a-flutter. Songs like "Ugly Twin" sent jaws floor-ward by including a plaintive piano part in a bruiser of a song. Such touches abound on "Hope for Men". The album is diverse, but the Jeans ain't no dilettantes. Mixing volatility with humor is a damned hard thing to master in music. Pissed Jeans do it with smarts and poignancy. Consider the bar raised. Black vinyl in sturdy black/white sleeve with insert and digital download coupon.
www.subpop.com/artists/pissed_jeans

PISSED JEANS "King of Jeans" LP 16€
(Sub Pop)
If 2005's "Shallow" was Pissed Jeans coping with moving out of their parents' homes, and 2007's "Hope for Men" their initial reaction to the mechanical lifestyle of a wage-earner, "King of Jeans" is their formal and uneasy acceptance of adulthood, by way of one hell of a rock record. Working with renowned producer Alex Newport (who holds a Fudge Tunnel pedigree and has worked with such luminaries as At the Drive-In, The Locust and Sepultura), Pissed Jeans have pushed further into the raw, minimal core of heavy rock music with "King of Jeans". Masters of the mundane, beasts of the banal, high priests of the humdrum: these four, white, male high school graduates hardly look further than their own appendages for artistic inspiration, content to execute their own brand of brash and heavy punk music in the Joe Carducci-approved standard rock formation of guitar, bass, drums and vocals. From simple minds and simple fabrics comes this "King of Jeans". And there can be only one. White/black marble vinyl in sturdy full colour sleeve with printed inner sleeve and digital download coupon.
www.subpop.com/artists/pissed_jeans

PISSED JEANS "Honeys" LP 16€
(Sub Pop)
Age and four full-lengths haven't mellowed Pissed Jeans; they can still unleash a blare that will exfoliate your cochlea. Formed in Allentown, Pennsylvania, Pissed Jeans released "Shallow", their first album, in 2005 on Parts Unknown Records. The band relocated to Philadelphia seven years ago, and Sub Pop released "Hope for Men" in 2007, and then "King of Jeans" in 2009. The latter was recorded by Grammy nominee Alex Newport, who also recorded "Honeys". Age and experience have, however, refined Pissed Jeans. Their ideas and execution have become more subtly focused. The songs on "Honeys" are direct without being obtuse, evocative without being vague, personal without being indulgent. They also rock like nobody's business. Forget all the claptrap you've heard about other bands delivering the goods. If you want bloodthirsty, you've got it… At times "Honeys" is the sound of being bashed over the head with a snow shovel. At times the band slows down and sounds like waking from a nightmare you can't quite remember. The songs are catchy, but in a way that would appeal to mental patients who only understand colors. "Honeys" stews on the kind of mundane, niggling things that keep you up late at night. It's an ode to the misery and shackles of being a responsible adult, and the shame of one's own narcissism. Pissed Jeans trucks in menacing songs about insecurity, and nobody has ever done it better. Black vinyl in sturdy sleeve with insert and digital download coupon.

STNNNG "Empire Inward" LP 12€
(Rejuvenation Records)
STNNNG (pronounced "stunning") are from the Twin Cities of Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota, USA. No, they do not sound like any of those three Minneapolis bands you can think of from VH1 Classic oversaturation or Rolling Stone's retro-active fawning. They sound more like a lumbering giant laughing madly while tangled up in some barbed electric fence. In other words, like heavy rock in the art-y/noisy Touch & Go vein. Think punk rock tenacity with metal power, classic rock riffage, vaudevillian showmanship and the hyper-literate lyrics of a man seemingly possessed by a full encyclopedia set of subtly deranged characters. Black/white marble vinyl in full colour sleeve with printed inner sleeve and digital download coupon. European vinyl edition limited to 300 copies.
