CD:

SPLINTERED "Turned Inside Out" 2CD 12€
(Totuuden Sarvi Levyt)
Splintered were a British experimental, post-industrial noise rock outfit that existed between 1990 and 1997. This double-CD release on the Finnish Totuuden Sarvi label is a collection of demos, singles, b-sides and unreleased material, most of which hardly pales in comparison to the material that actually ended up on a record. Splintered were rock in the sense that more than often their material resembled actual 'songs' instead of all-out noise. The industrial side of Splintered comes from the use of samples, tapes, junk etc. in addition to the more traditional rock instrumentation and even though they made actual songs, the repetitive and abrasive quality set Splintered apart from your run-of-the-mill industrial rockers. Two disc set in jewel case with black/white artwork and lengthy liner notes by James Machin and Richard Johnson.

VINYYLIT:

RECTAL HYGIENICS "Even the Flies Won't Touch You" LP 15€
(Torn Light Records)
Finally the vinyl version of the debut Rectal Hygienics tape that came out on Depravity Label. Stomping through seven tracks of noise rock filth ranging from mid-tempo to downright sludgy, this Chicago quartet crawls in the most nihilistic and perverse gutters previously inhabited by the likes of Brainbombs, Twin Stumps, Rusted Shut and other sorry fucks. Rectal Hygienics features former and current members of Socially Retarded, Sea of Shit, Hate Basement, Machismo, Abuse Patterns, CSTVT and Sharptooth. Black vinyl housed in a screenprinted sleeve with a fold-out poster/lyric sheet. One time pressing limited to 300 copies, already sold out from the label!

WHITE WALLS "Kevin "The Magnum Opus"" 12" 13€
(Torn Light Records/Video Disease Records)
The newest 12" from Ohio's White Walls shows the band revisiting and reinventing a song that was released on tape by Life Rot a few years ago. The recording on the tape however did not do the song justice, and the band decided it was time to enter a new studio for a sound different than their previous releases. The results are quite possibly the bands best, most powerful statement yet. As stated before "Kevin" has been re-recorded in the full glory that it was intended. Accompanying "Kevin" are two new songs that find the band at their peak. Somewhere between Black Flag, Shellac and Nirvana, they've managed to find an incredibly great disjointed sound that represents all of their talents. Rounding out the record is a jaw dropping cover of The Pixies' "Bone Machine" which rivals, if not surpasses the original. This cover is not simply filler material, it is done with the utmost care and precision and represents what the band is capable of and what things may come. Pink marble vinyl in full colour sleeve with full colour lyrics insert. Pink vinyl is limited to 600 copies out of 800 copies in total.

BRAINBOMBS "Disposal of a Dead Body" 2LP 20€
(Skrammel Records)
Pretty much out of the blue, Brainbombs presents their first new album in 5 years! Consisting of material recorded between 2006-2009 (or 2009-2011, depending on the source), this double-LP features a whopping 24 songs of bona fide Swedish debauchery. The song titles may have matured a bit, but everything here still has that sense of blood, bile and unwashed cocks rubbed on worn out copies of The Stooges records. Black vinyls in double-LP sleeve. Black vinyl limited to 800 copies.

PIGS "Gaffe" 10" 11€
(Solar Flare Records)
Pigs, the New York City group that includes Dave Curran from Unsane and renowned producer Andrew Schneider (Cave In, Converge, Made Out of Babies, Unsane, Keelhaul) return with a new 10" EP, "Gaffe". Serving as a stop-gap release between the band's acclaimed debut album "You Ruin Everything" and their forthcoming sophomore effort still in the works, "Gaffe" also serves to celebrate their imminent European tour along with label mates Sofy Major. Featuring three new tracks, "Gaffe" is simple and pure, showcasing a more relaxed approach than "You Ruin Everything", but still retaining the dirtiness of noise rock and the sludge heaviness masterfully explored on their debut album. Essentially, "Gaffe" is another positive step forward in the evolution of an already respected collective known as Pigs. Black vinyl in screenprinted jacket. Black vinyl is limited to 250 copies out of 500 copies in total.

USKO "Kullankukkula/Liipola" 7"
(Penny Whistles and Moon Pies)
Hot on the heels of the well received "Kuusi" tape and right before the release of their split 7" with the mighty Loinen, the Lahti-based Usko pummel us with a two-song 7" vinyl. The bulldozing twin-bass sludge attack has gained more variety compared to the older stuff and while certain influences definitely shine through, it's almost impossible to name another band that would sound quite like Usko. White marble vinyl in red/black sleeve with lyrics insert.

VINYYLIT:

TAR "1988-1995" 2LP 25€
(Chunklet)
What can you say about Tar? They were a band that existed in a very fruitful time for rock music to spin out of punk. When Tar started out in 1988, out of post HC/skate rock outfit Blatant Dissent, there were no eyes on anything remotely underground. You had to know people, or at least listen in on the right conversations, to figure out your ass from your elbow. It was a time when, if you were playing non-mainstream music, you would have to start riots and destroy venues, or smear yourself with shit and eat used tampons to get recognized in the media. When Tar called it a day in 1995, at least two bands they toured with, and five bands with whom they shared rosters on both the Amphetamine Reptile and Touch & Go labels, had signed to majors. What happened in between is history. And history is what we are here to celebrate. Even in their heyday, there weren't a lot of bands like Tar, either in their hometown of Chicago or anywhere else. There were bands that had the choreographed stage moves, the short hair, the loud amps, the promotional matchbooks, but few if any could manage what Tar did, which was to create a new, strict, limited vocabulary for rock-based music. Since you can’t spell "guitar" without "tar," their use in the band went uncontested. They had two really cool ones at that, belonging to deadpan frontman John Mohr and bassist Tom Zaluckyj, forged out of aircraft aluminum, which built one of the foundations of their sound: prolonged sustain, chords that rang out as long as they could hold out. So that was a thing. The rest of the Tar rulebook worked as such: capture the sound of three guitars playing different notes at the same time, discover harmonious sound in the discord that could erupt from the potential incompatibilities, and no leads, no solos, no posturing. What resulted was an architected noise, completed by Mark Zablocki's second guitar and Mike Greenlees' clean, solid drumming (and until 1991, bass guitarist, Tim Mescher) that sat firmly in the midst of the ugly American overkill of Midwestern noise rock, but with eyes on the shimmering expanses of shoegaze from afar. Studio engineers worked with the band to exploit the capacities of this approach; Steve Albini fused the guitar tones together on their 1991 album "Jackson", while Brad Wood found synergies in the spaces between them for the subsequent release 1993's "Clincher" EP. Their approach seems deceptively simple, but mindbreaking thought went into how that sound came to be. They had peers in both Savage Republic's desert psychedelia and Glenn Branca's and Rhys Chatham's guitar orchestras, but none of those artists were able to apply those ideas to catchy, driving three-minute rock songs the way that Tar could. When Tar broke up, other bands weren't citing them as a primary influence in what they were trying to do with their own music. In essence, rock gave up on Tar; bands no longer got beaten up for having someone playing a synthesizer, and the group's legacy was buried by history. Tar reunited for local performances in 2012, and to commemorate, longtime fan Henry Owings released a two-song 7” on his Chunklet label featuring session outtakes from the band's final album, "Over and Out". Now, the fruits of their labor can be found in "1988-1995", a double album which dutifully collects all of Tar's in between moments: 7" singles, splits, compilation tracks, unreleased material, and their entire John Peel Session. These 21 tracks reveal the hidden history of Tar's progression from mechanized thrash into gracefully strong, peerless rock-not-roll, and that even appearances on tour singles and multi-band collections were reasons to bring their A-game. Over fifteen years have passed since Tar's initial demise, and "1988-1995" presents a band due for serious re-evaluation as deafening iconoclasts of independent music.
The double-LP contains every non-12" vinyl release by Tar, including all singles, compilation tracks, unreleased, and a 1992 Peel Session, and covers of songs by Pere Ubu ("Non-Alignment Pact"), Jawbox ("Static"), AC/DC ("Hell's Bells"), and Dobie Gray/Bryan Ferry ("The In Crowd"). Two black vinyls come in an expanded jacket with liner notes from many of Tar's comrades. Bonus digital download features "Want/Need"; over two hours of live Tar recordings from the band's archives, spanning every period in the band's development.

Päivitys 1.12.2013

VINYYLIT:

DARK TIMES "Girl Hate" 7"
(Fysisk Format)
Dark Times springs from the elusive Black Hole Crew (Haust, Okkultokrati and more), and has – with only a 7" and a demo cassette – achieved a high standing in the Oslo underground. The band has been hailed by NME and Brooklyn Vegan and is the first Norwegian band ever to be profiled in the American punk-rock bible Maximum Rocknroll. The band consists of guitarist/lead singer AK and drummer Rikke, who both have a history of working in student radio. Baritone guitarist Sebastian Rusten is also a notable illustrator, with artwork for several Okkultokrati releases as well as Dark Times' first 7". Produced by Pål Bredup of Okkultokrati and Haust, their second 7", "Girl Hate", is pure musical passion and fire. Four short, precise tracks where nothing gets in the way of their agenda. The group's stylish monochrome and precise blend of nowave, noise rock and hardcore punk have led to comparisons to Black Flag and the early output of bands like Sonic Youth, Mudhoney and PJ Harvey. Untouched by the arch-Norwegian ideal of nitpicking and competence, Dark Times' fierceness will excite any fan of hard, raw rock. Black vinyl in full colour sleeve.

MESSERSCHMITT "s/t" LP 16€
(Fysisk Format)
Brand new heavy stoner rock trio from Halden, Norway. Although the label compares Messerschmitt to the likes of Kyuss and Fu Manchu, there's a much more Scandinavian touch to the riffage with the desert placed with snow and absence of light. This self-titled debut album by Messerschmitt was recorded in Halden's famous studio Athletic Sound by Kai Andersen and was mastered by Billy Anderson. Black vinyl in full colour sleeve. Limited and numbered edition of 500 copies.
http://youtu.be/1RNpGdO-Dis

NERNES/SKAGEN "Confession" LP 16€
(Fysisk Format)
With dissemination of anxiety, confusion, humiliation, darkness, conflict, cruelty, nihilism, inferno and all kinds of other evil, Lautréamonts fictional character Maldoror attempts to demonstrate the hated mankind its own badness. With the second album of their experimental project Nernes/Skagen, Kjetil Nernes and Stian Skagen, both members of the noise rock/chaos formation Årabrot, want to tell the story of a contemporary Maldoror. However, the Norwegian duo aims not to set the literary text to music, but to generate appropriate moods. Instead of coarse words, as with Lautréamont, "Confession" is told with massive guitar drones and abstract electronic noise. The inhospitable and distant sounds create a quite dark atmosphere. In the vein of Earth and Khanate, Nernes/Skagen create narrative soundscapes that are tentatively searching through an eerily desolate dark. Black vinyl in black/gold sleeve.
http://youtu.be/inQ2dy3oiVc

ÅRABROT "The Brother Seed" LP 14€
(Norway Rat)
Årabrot is a Norwegian band that plays some downright nasty sounding noise-rock. "The Brother Seed", released through Norway Rat records, is their third album after releasing two previous exceptional slabs of noise. This stuff is pretty killer and absolutely crazed in all the right ways. It's impossible to pinpoint what the singer is going to do, as it seems like every song he shouts, grumbles, and growls in different ways that sound equally terrifying no matter which he chooses. The music keeps things interesting as well, as Årabrot goes back and forth from a claustrophobic wall of distortion and drums to surprisingly melodic parts… or at least as melodic as something like this tends to be. Either way, the variations throughout the album help it maintain a level of consistent interest, along with propelling it to be what probably is their best effort to date. "The Brother Seed" was recorded and mixed by Steve Albini and mastered by Bob Weston at Electrical Audio in Chicago and that's the kind of namedropping that should make you reach for your wallet. Black vinyl in full colour sleeve.
www.arabrot.com

ÅRABROT "Revenge" 2LP 20€
(Fysisk Format)
Årabrot are a Norwegian noise rock trio who operate in a seriously '90s-besotted style; their rumbling, jagged guitar and pummeling, semi-tribal drumming are all equal parts Unsane, Jesus Lizard and Knut. Vocalist/guitarist Kjetil Nernes doesn't have David Yow's magnetic personality, but he's got vitriol on his side, and his two partners, drummer Vidar Evensen and effects-meister Stian Skagen, match the waves of noise coming from his instrument with a raw throb all their own. Årabrot patently reject black metal, which has somehow become their homeland's primary musical export over the last 15 years or so; instead, they keep their heads down and make an Amphetamine Reptile-style racket, occasionally turning positively hypnotic (but in more of a cobra-staring-down-a-mouse way than a you-are-getting-very-sleepy way). "The Dolorous Years" is over 12 minutes long, and the last four or five minutes of that are taken up with a pounding drum pattern, over which electronics hiss and roar; it's like a collaboration between Merzbow and Shellac. The final track, "The Primrose Path," is a death march/dirge that crosses Knut's relentless battery with the trudging resignation of Alex Newport's post-Fudge Tunnel band Theory of Ruin. This is an album for people who like their rock to rock, but in the ugliest, meanest way possible. Two black vinyls in full colour gatefold sleeve including a digital download coupon.
www.arabrot.com

ÅRABROT "Mæsscr" MLP 13€
(Fysisk Format)
In their eleven years of existence, noise rockers Årabrot have been an intangible and ever-changing orchestra. Forever amending and constantly in opposition, often towards themselves. Throughout the years they've touched many a different field, but seldom as eerie as on "Mæsscr". With pianos, pump organs and hissing, whispering vocals as main tools, Årabrot is molding a musical landscape that lugubriously signals sexuality, violence and morals. In addition to two new songs, Årabrot have done remakes of Lee Hazlewood's "Poor Man" and Death in June's "Kukuku" and "The Honour of Silence". The recordings have been made partially on American and Swedish ground, but the main recordings, mixing and producing was done by Emil Nikolaisen (Serena Maneesh) in Malabar Studios, Oslo, August 2011. "Mæsscr" is another fundamental outburst from a group that never stops being unpleasant. Black vinyl in full colour sleeve.
www.arabrot.com

ÅRABROT "s/t" LP+CD 16€
(Fysisk Format)
The entirety of Årabrot's self-titled sixth album concerns noisy, meaty, venomous sounds. That's how it was in the beginning, and that's how it is now, and who would want it any other way. Not that there aren't some fun developments in this latest stop along the group's timeline. The fantastically titled "Throwing Rocks at the Devil" includes some scratchy riffs that could have been plucked from Nirvana's "Bleach", while the hard-driving standout "Arrabal's Dream" features guest vocals by Kylesa's Laura Pleasants, which are harsh and searing enough to rival the band's own Nibby Needle. And "The Horns of the Devil Grow" is the album's most epic moment, packing into five minutes a lethal mixture of menace and melody that's worth the wait leading up to it. In more than a decade as a pummeling, amplifier-blowing noise-rock band, Årabrot went from being rejected from the table where the symphonic black metal goblets glisten to actually winning a Norwegian Grammy. And you can bet that their strategy for success is the same one that makes them such a brutal listen — their total inability to give a shit. Limited edition 180g green vinyl edition in full colour sleeve including a CD-version of the album.
www.arabrot.com

ÅRABROT "Murder as Art" MLP 13€
(Fysisk Format)
"Murder as Art" is a follow-up EP to Årabrot's celebrated sixth album, produced by Emil Nikolaisen of Serena Maneesh who also plays drums and bass on the release. The three new tracks also features Karin Park, Lasse Marhaug and Erland Dahlen (Nils Petter Molvær). The A-side features "Signifying Monkey", a loose decadent rocker and the pitch black noise track "Mystikum", whilst the B-side features a 15 minute sonic monster: "Story of Lot". The original story of Lot can be found in both the Bible and the Koran and tells the story of a man who, on God's command, leaves Sodom and becomes the incestuous father of a great tribe. Årabrot's take on "Story of Lot" was originally intended as the center-piece of the album, but as recording commenced, unexpected things started to happen. The motoric pulse at the basis of the track, sprouted a grotesque appetite for sounds. Generous amounts of boasting bass lines and opulent organs was fed to the mix, but this only amplified the unruly rhythm. The famed noise-jockeys Lasse Marhaug and Erland Dahlen were sent for to tame the beast, but nothing could control the yeasty black mass from growing. It was evident that "Story of Lot" had grown out of all proportions and would swallow the whole album if it wasn't put in a reservation of its own: A full 12" side on a separate release. The EP features artwork by the Norwegian artist Johannes Høie and a printed inner-sleeve with a short story by the legendary English writer John Doran. White vinyl in full colour sleeve with printed inner sleeve. Limited edition of 500 copies.

FLESHPRESS "Tearing Skyholes" 2x12" 17€
(Kult of Nihilow)
Four men dragging behind them a weight equal to the burden of existence. Years and years of constant uphill struggle, slowly rising from sludgy roots towards a plane never walked, witnessed or heard. Parched skin and weary posture may fool the uninitiated, for this troupe will bare their teeth when you least expect it, devouring all like the gaping maw of a sudden storm. All this manifests on Tearing Skyholes, the sixth album by Fleshpress. The years travelled off the beaten path show in the pure vision and determination to deliver the ultimate work of sound thus far. Ironically, the sound now being stripped to bare essentials, the music reveals unprecedented sonic richness and atmosphere. Make no mistake; the teeth are still sharp, the spit remains venomous and the heaviness is still more than you can handle, but something new and far more ominous is brooding inside this beast. Two black vinyls in full colour sleeve with insert.

WARD "s/t" LP 12€
(Johnny Park Avenue Records/Tuska & Ahdistus/Pupu's Bistro/Rämekuukkeli Records)
The long awaited debut album from this Finnish sludge/doom band. Four lengthy pieces that drag the listener through murky and crusty sludge, but offering a rather refreshing take on it, mixing together elements from doom metal and even melodic post-metal passages. Nevertheless you shouldn't prepare for an easy-listening experience, Ward do their best to keep you feeling uneasy all throughout the record. Black vinyl in full colour sleeve with insert. Limited edition of 500 copies.

FLESHPRESS "Tearing Skyholes" CD 10€
Full colour fold out sleeve.

AORTAORTA "Violent Meditation" LP 11€

"Violent Meditation" marks the second full length album for the Tampere -based Aortaorta. Black vinyl in a huge black/white fold-out sleeve. Limited edition of 300 copies.

RUSTED SHUT "Rehab" LP 16€
(Dull Knife)
Rusted Shut formed in 1986 and continue to lay their repetitive napalm music on the lucky unwashed of Texas. As performers, their live show is infamously entertaining, arguing, backhands, kicking and all. Leader Don Walsh, a former oil rig worker, writes romantic lines like "I never asked to be born / I wish I would fuckin' die" and "Do you like this life / Do you like to slice?" Though made by lovely harmless people, "Rehab" is the culmination of many years of genuine hatred, and with this long-delayed sophomore release, the whole earth may now bathe in their infectious scorn. Finally a vinyl version of the album originally released on Emperor Jones back in 2004. Black vintyl in black/white sleeve. Limited edition of 300 copies.

ELEPHANT RIFLE "Party Child" LP 16€
(Humaniterrorist/Satan's Pimp Records)
In the vast musical universe, rockers free of the gravitational pull of songwriting ability can trip down the black holes of noise rock, hardcore punk and grunge metal and generate theatrical cacophony - a parody of art, an excuse to go vinyl, a way to gig for bar tabs in front of their hipster faithful who dig the head-banging grooves and sonic surprises, and for whom the joke doesn't simply implode. To its credit, Elephant Rifle rockets through this dissonant dimension with meticulous craftsmanship on its first full-length album, "Party Child." The Reno-based quartet sucks in listeners with an aural assault of time signature and tempo changes, guitar distortion, unexpected electronic and percussive effects, textural snatches of horns and organ, and hoarse, largely undecipherable, frothing-at-the-mouth vocals from bandleader Brad Bynum. The result: an unremitting meteor shower of metalloid rock exploding with bleak pubescent emotion, manic energy and merry dementia. Clear vinyl in black/white sleeve with printed inner sleeve and digital download coupon.

BAD AMERICAN "American Dream" LP 13€
(Shogun Records)
Bad American are back with their second album in just as many years – these guys must be wicked, because there's clearly no rest for them. They seem to have honed their approach further with "American Dream", manipulating heavy '90s-ish AmRep riffing into an early '80s hardcore-punk template. One of these guys probably saw Black Flag live (you know, the first time around) and he has taken their aggressive, distinctly American form of anger as his own. The mid-paced tracks tend to groove more than slam, but the whole record flows pretty well, and the vocals of one Ray Gurz (Tile) still sound like vintage Carpenter Ant. Essential stuff! Black vinyl in full colour sleeve with printed inner sleeve. Limited edition of 500 copies.

BLACKLISTERS "s/t" LP 13€
(A Tant Rêver Du Roi)
To be blacklisted means to go about without any recognition. Well, not for long. Support slots for Rolo Tomassi, Chickenhawk, Melt Banana and being picked to play the Reading and Leeds Festivals has helped Blacklisters quickly establish themselves as a formidable live act through aggressive, confrontational performances riddled with dark humour. Their first full-length release is their heaviest and most visceral collection of songs to date, and announces the band's potential as a major force in underground rock music. From the moment album opener "Clubfoot by Kasabian" kicks in and throughout the next forty minutes or so that follows, "BLKLSTRS" is an unrelenting, ferocious, and somewhat anarchic tour de force. Dante Beesley's sharp guitar playing is forever in battle with Billy Mason-Wood's terrifying and in-your-face vocals. Combined with Own Griffiths' thunderous bass lines and Alistair Stobbart's full-throttle drumming, the album drives on at neck-break speed. Pointing towards Leeds-counterparts Pulled Apart by Horses, tracks such as "Swords", "Mouthpeace" and "Trickfuck" are real standouts. Album closer "Shush" is a fitting way to sign off. Maybe it is a demand to the people? Shush, be quiet, listen to us! It won’t be long before Blacklisters get the recognition they deserve. This is the French pressing of the album. Red vinyl in full colour sleeve with printed inner sleeve. Different artwork than the other pressings.

FRIEND COLLECTOR "American Demos" LP 15€
(Terra Firma)
It would be a surprise if Friend Collector was actually out there making good on their name and actually, you know, making friends. However, judging by the sort of nihilistic noise and message that comes together on the band's debut album they probably aren't winning them over in droves. As has been the case with Jason Donnells' past projects such as The New Flesh and Pfisters, where they dished out yet a similar brand of unrelenting brand of noise rock. Where does Friend Collector stand in the mix of things? Well, certainly more towards the frustrated and violent characteristics of The New Flesh and not so much the more rock'n'roll or Jesus Lizard type of sound that Pfisters presented. However, that's not to say that Friend Collector doesn't bring together a bit of both here. There is definitely noticeable hints of rhythm here and there as opposed to the straight run of monotony of a Swans -like bludgeoning. There is still certainly plenty of that as well though, leaving it loud and bursting at the seams with bass and drums. Showing their disgust to those that are misinformed and inept at making commentary towards their country, it certainly adds to the levels of intensity and vitriol that spews forth from collection of tracks here. Friend Collector successfully creates the type of imagery of a spiraling present and a not so bright future if current trends continue. Purple marble vinyl in full colour sleeve with insert, stickers and digital download coupon. Limited edition of 300 copies.

THE NEW FLESH "Dog / Memory Scraps" 7"
(Terra Firma/Human Conduct)
Baltimore trio The New Flesh fit in nicely with a nasty new breed of bands combining hardcore and harsh noise to varied, but often devastating effects. Better known bands of this ilk include Pissed Jeans, Air Conditioning, and Vegas Martyrs. The "Dog b/w Memory Scrap" 7" on Terra Firma is a slab that sloppily chugs along and displays a fair amount of promise. Sounding like The Jesus Lizard on downers or a less homicidal Brainbombs, "Dog" absolutely relishes in the dirge. In fact, it relishes so much that there really isn't much change throughout the song's two or three minute length. Bass and drums plod forth and propel the track, while guitarist/vocalist Dan Propert's brief passages on suburban banality are distorted and buried in the mix. "Memory Scrap" goes for more immediate impact, with loud, pounding rhythm and more intense, screamed vocals. Each side provides a quick, focused bludgeon and that's it. Black vinyl in full colour fold-out sleeve with insert. Black vinyl is limited to 300 copies out of 200 copies in total.

A GUIDE TO RATIONAL LIVING "Volume One" Tape
(Accidental Guest Records)
The six songs on A Guide to Rational Living's debut tape are unexpectedly melodic and straightforward. The New Flesh was an enormously powerful group; they sounded like a tornado, loud as hell and too fast to grab onto anything. Scott Russell's (best known from Friend Collector) songs are more along the lines of Hüsker Dü or later period Unwound, sing-a-long melodies obscured by fuzzy double tracked vocals and a huge, blown out drum sound. What separates nearly everything Terra Firma has put out from progenitors like Polvo, U.S. Maple, Unwound, or early Don Caballero is how clean and propulsive the production is. Almost everything SST put out sounds like shit, thin guitars, limp bass and a treble heavy sound that castrates good rock songs. Russell's solo work is fleshed out and dense, and the work feels edited and calculated, setting it apart from lots of similar noisy, discordant rock bands who lose the plot in their own dark throb. "Careful" revolves a simple, bludgeoning bass pattern followed by gorgeously warm and ringing guitar harmonics, supporting Russell's double/triple-tracked vocals, wrung in a distortion that wavers between being too intense and impossible to understand to revealing Russell's surprisingly good voice. "Joke" is based around an atonal riff that embodies a very specific bright, cutting guitar sound that so many weird hard rock bands loved. His drumming is explosive and booming, as close to the Albini/Grohl "In Utero" sound as can be done on a shoestring budget. And the playing on the A Guide to Rational Living tape is superb and eschews the lazy/cool posture of sanctifying first takes and adorable mistakes, because why bother putting something down onto your hard drive, to be repeated digitally until the end of time, if it's sloppy? The songs on here are driving and adhere to precise, chopped rhythms that make it an exhilarating listen. Pro-duplicated tape with full colour j-card and digital download coupon.
http://terrafirmarecords.bandcamp.com/a … volume-one

FRIEND COLLECTOR "FCII" Tape
(Terra Firma)
Those that enjoy noise rock and haven't heard Friend Collector or their debut album "American Demos" yet, well you've been missing out. Never fear though, as the band is back with a brand new 6 track EP simply titled "FCII". Some may already be a bit familiar with these guys and not even really know it, considering they have ties back to the wonderfully noisy The New Flesh who released a couple or so excellent albums highly recommend to track down if given the time. Friend Collector, in most ways, haven't deviated terribly from the path that was forged with The New Flesh, but the songs are certainly a little more drawn out and aren't as much in debt to the big thudding monotony of bands like Drunks With Guns etc. Rather, Friend Collector sling a more decipherable type of noise rock, using atonal shifts and scrapes that create a whopping mass of destruction… plowing along beside a hefty low-end. The pacing sometimes causes it to remind of early Swans, but in most cases Friend Collector are producing a similar sort of noise to those of past and current bands like Glazed Baby or Scul Hazzards. Pro-duplicated cassette with full colour j-card and digital download coupon. Limited edition of 100 copies.
http://friendcollector.bandcamp.com

HIVE BENT "U Neutral" Tape
(Terra Firma)
Hive Bent brings nouveau noise rock back to the time when it was swimming around the same primordial puddle as grunge. "U Neutral" will get your head bobbing with their, perhaps, unintentionally off-center grooves. It's a slice of Phleg Camp or Mule sutured onto Mudhoney at its most aggressive. Riffs fly out in all directions only to be yanked back to the amp with the recoil of a bungee chord. Appropriate as they're self-tagged as bunge rock like fellow Baltimore sludge popsters Roomrunner. Huff Hive Bent from a paper bag and feel alright. And slightly brain damaged. Pro-duplicated tape with full colour j-card and digital download coupon. Limited edition of 100 copies.

CARNE "Ville Morgue" LP 13€
(Solar Flare Records)
After releasing their debut EP, "Metropolis", on Atropine Records in 2010, Carne retuns with a new album, "Ville Morgue". Since then, the duo from Lyon (France) refined their noisy blend of sludge. Used to hammering mid tempo riffage backed by savagely pounding drums, the duo also at times feeds on roaring and filthy blastbeats. The guitarist's vocals, rugged and pushed to their extremes, rushes on these blackened assaults, taking full magnitude live when fueled by an insane amount of cranked amps. Throughout these ten tracks the duo elaborates a very strong tumor concentrate mixed with large quantities of beer. The collaboration with Marion (Overmars / Abronzius) on "Slave/Her" opens a new dimension in Carne's approach and gives way to other participations of the same type in the future. "Ville Morgue" reaffirms Carne's identity and shows a new step in its continual evolution, a methodical research of darkness and intensity that they already express communicatively live. Carne sings about everyday life, boredom, cities, alternatives and procrastination. Black vinyl in black/white sleeve with lyrics insert.

STUNTMAN "Incorporate the Excess" LP 13€
(Solar Flare Records)
From Sète, situated on the southern shorelines of France, a brutalizing outfit known as Stuntman thrives. Having polluted the atmospheres of this lush, beautiful landscape since autumn 2002, through a plethora of lineup changes over the years, and following a considerable discography thus far including two previous albums, an EP, a split and a dozen compilation appearances, Stuntman now deliver their most energetic hatred yet with the release of their third album, "Incorporate the Excess". Rampant noise-soaked angular hardcore courses through every second of these new tracks Stuntman drops on "Incorporate the Excess", the album reminiscent of turn-of-the-century pioneers Botch, Keelhaul, Unsane and Knut while brandishing blasting grindcore attitude. The nearly twenty-seven minute hellride of "Incorporate the Excess" ensures you'll incur whiplash, then drags you through a torturous feedback frenzy right to the bitter end. QUTTINIRPAAQ "No Visitors" LP 16€
(Rural Isolation Project)
"No Visitors" is a serious blast of drug addled Southern psych, the opening 90 second blast a crumbling almost industrial sounding dirge that sounds like Brainbombs at 16rpm, filtered through some seriously Butthole Surfers style drugginess. And while not all of "No Visitors" is nearly so noisy, it is all pretty goddamn great. From pulsing low slung krautrock style murk, like on "Malvert", which drapes the motorik mesmer with wild squalls of caustic guitar noise, and creepy hissy whispery vocals, and what might be some detuned pianos, to slo-mo black noise doom-dirge crumble, like on "Ex-Batts" which literally sounds like the tape has been slowed down, so all the instruments rumble and crumble and moan, everything wrapped in sheets of wild squealing feedback, and near Merzbowian noise, all the while lumbering and lurching like some lost Buttholes jam played back on a broken boombox. These guys exist somewhere between skull crushing noise rock, atmospheric noise drenched Japanese style psych and primitive caveman dirgery, comparisons having mentioned Brainbombs, Skullflower and Les Rallizes Denudes, but they probably should also include Drunkdriver, Twin Stumps, Violent Students, Rusted Shut, Burmese, Liquorball, you can probably figure out what sort of glorious, druggy noisiness we're talking about. Super heavy, ultra psychedelic, stumbling and crushing, tranced out and woozily hypnotic, massive slabs of churning low end, beneath crunchy, jagged, distorto guitars, wild streaks of feedback everywhere, the vocals yelped and yowled, sometimes bellowed, here and there delivered in a deeply dramatic, and sort of creepy croon, the sound constantly on the verge of collapse, but always seeming to eventually coalesce into some seriously demented, kraut-sludge heaviness. Purple 180 gram vinyl in full colour sleeve. Limited edition of 300 copies.

QUTTINIRPAAQ "Let's Hang Out" LP 16€
(Rural Isolation Project)
If you dug "No Visitors", the debut LP from this drugged out psych/doom/noise/kraut/sludge outfit, this is more of the same, blown out psychedelic heaviness, that sounds like a mash-up up of the Butthole Surfers, Hawkwind and Shit and Shine, all filtered though AmRep nineties noise rock and Texas knuckle draggers Rusted Shut. Which is about all you need to know. The brief sort-of intro, the sweetly titled "Diary of a Pig Keeper's Wife", is all detuned trudge, crumbling slo-mo riffage, death march drums, weird, slowed down chant like vocals, this is some sort of wasted, psychedelic ultra doom, but it's on "Chinese Hercules" that Quttinirpaaq really get to flex their musical muscles, locking almost immediately into some seriously tranced out, heavy hypno-rock riffage, that weds super distorted drum pound to churning looped riffage, garbled vox and swirls of noise and effects into some heavy, space, psychedelic noise rock that takes everything you love about White Hills, The Heads and all the rest, cranks it way up, and drags it through the filth, resulting in some seriously next level kraut-sludge space-psych heaviness that kills. And while it doesn't necessarily get better from there (not sure how it could really), it stays pretty epic and psychedelic, heavy and warped, tripped our and trancey, most of the tracks some weird sort of hybridized psychedelic krautrock and noise rock crush, the band locked into endless grooves that roil and churn mesmerically, while all around sounds swoop and swirl, streaks of feedback, blasts of FX, constantly shifting textures, buried melodies, all blurred and smeared into heaving, noisy, heavy psych weirdness. Some of the tracks here get downright out there, some surprisingly beautiful, still noisy, but infused with surprising melodies, and crafted with a delicate touch, while others are just pure skull caving crush, and still others are almost electronic sounding, seemingly dabbling in the same warped outsider electronics as Shit and Shine. Needless to say this rules. Everyone who bought and loved "No Visitors", is gonna want this too. And if you've yet to check these guys out, "Let's Hang Out" might just be your new favorite heavy/noise/psych/space jam. You have been warned. Pressed on 180 gram "clear with blood spray" vinyl in full colour sleeve including a full colour insert. Limited edition of 300 copies.

Nice little cassette release from two up-and-coming Finnish bands. Toast from Helsinki present three songs of heavily 90s influenced noisy indie rock, think Pavement and the like. Delightfully sloppy, but still keeping things tight enough to avoid embarrassment on the listeners' behalf. Torso. blast through two songs of their spacey noise rock. Where the "Giallo" 7" might have received quite a few Lightning Bolt, the songs on this tape bring to mind godheadSilo at their trippiest and it's not just because Torso. is a drum'n'bass duo as well. LOINEN "s/t" LP 15€
(Svart Records)
Sludge metal has been experiencing a resurgence in Finland over the past few years, with bands like Fleshpress, Frogskin, Stumm and Hebosagil. The grittiest, nastiest and most obscure of the bunch, however, is Loinen, hailing from the dirtiest ghettos of Karjaa, in downtuned wasteland of southern Finland. With more focus on the sludge than the metal, Loinen have the habit of churning out untitled releases primarily on tape and vinyl. This untitled album was recorded in early 2012 and finally saw the bright light of day on Valentine's Day 2014. Black vinyl in full colour sleeve. Limited edition of 425 copies.

SINK "Fog & Dominance" MLP 14€
(Svart Records)
Another strange and ambitious adventure into the heart of darkness. Anything you build on a large scale or with intense passion invites chaos. This world is drowning in excess of everything imaginable. Everything ends up recycled and nothing sounds new. Nevertheless Sink has chosen to be obsessive about its uncompromised existence and fight against windmills with another spectacle in sound and imagination. This is a challenging and demanding masterpiece and certainly not for everyone's pleasure. Black vinyl in black/white sleeve with insert. Limited edition of 300 copies.

FLOOR "s/t" LP+7" 18€
(Robotic Empire)
Expanded standalone reissue of Floor's seminal self-titled album. Like the sound of heaven collapsing, Floor prematurely left us with this brilliant monolith of a thunderous yet soaring doom sludge pop rock hybrid, that nothing before or after has truly compared to. Laying the bedrock for what would come years later with Torche, the self-titled Floor album was and is the stuff of legends. A magnificent merging of the best elements from "heavy" to "catchy", Floor's legacy was not founded on this album, but was forged with it. With the monumental "bomb string" in tow, an unlikely but amazing combination of incredibly deep-tuned doom rock, sing-along harmonized vocals, a bombastic rhythm and pop sensibilities all set Floor apart from contemporaries. Thankfully the posthumous legacy created by their recordings has revived activity into the band, and Robotic Empire presents this massive release for availability once again. Housed in a beautiful full-color gatefold LP jacket with silver coverage throughout, a custom glue-pocket includes three bonus "outtakes" on a correlating 7", originally from the same recording session and unearthed surrounding the "Below & Beyond "discography/box set. Floor's self-titled album is now available in full as this 16-track 12"+7", and contains a high-quality digital download of all tracks. Clear vinyl edition limited to 300 copies out of 2000 copies in total.

THOU "Heathen" 2LP 18€
(Vendetta Records)
Since 2007, Thou has released over 20 records (3 full lengths, 5 EPs, and a considerable amount of split releases) and has toured North America and Europe repeatedly, playing nearly 400 shows. They have made a name for themselves as one of the most prolific and consistent bands in the doom and sludge metal scenes, while retaining the ethics of DIY punk. Now, Thou brings us their fourth full-length album, "Heathen", their first full-length since 2010's "Summit". This record shows a clear progression from their earlier works, combining the melody and hopefulness of "Summit" with the heaviness and melancholia of "Peasant" and "Tyrant". European version comes on black vinyl in black/white gatefold sleeve. First pressing of 500 copies, already sold out from the label!
