Aikamme äänisankarit. Ilman näitä Björk vois olla ihan paljon erilaisempi ja ilman Björkiä en varmaan tietäisi näiden olemassa olosta juuri mitään.

The Civil War on miun suosikki. Tosin emmä osaa sillee järjestää näiden tuotoksii ku ovat ihan kreisei.

Viime keväänä näin nää keikalla Lontoossa. Enpä oo nauranut niin paljon millään keikalla. Ja vielä kun musiikki oli niin mahtavaa. Koskin jopa niiden yhteen soittimeen, joka oli ilmapallo. Kaikkii peltejä, koneita, veden lorinaa ja mitä vielä... Keikan alku oli varsinkin parhuutta. Niillä piti olla sellanen introvideo, mutta jostain syystä ne ei saanu toimimaan kuvaa ja ääntä yhtäaikaa. No sit yleisö vähän avitti. Videossa muistaakseni läpsittii peppua. Kuva näky ja yleisö läpsi. Sit ne tyypit oli piilossa laitteiden takana. No sit kai niillä meni hermi ja yksi otti housut alas ja kävi toisen reisien päälle makaa. Mikit paikoilleen ja peppuu läpsytettiin. Parhuutta!!

Samassa tapahtumassa (Ether Festival) oli esiintymässä myös Ikue Mori & Zeena Parkins ja Charlemagne Palestine plus Cycloben mahtavaa dj-settii kuulu aulassa. Nii Matmoksen keikan jälkeen oli pieni tauko, jonka jälkeen vetivät ehkä jonku kymmenen minuutin setin yhdessä Zeenan ja Ikuen kanssa. Hatusta kai vetivät kaiken...

Mut joo. Kaikki varmaan tietää Matmoksen. Jos ei ni kuunnelkaa vaikka leikkaussalin ääniä, hotorot!

Tämä on aika jännittävä bändi. Näiden erikoisuus on kaiken hyvin erikoisen materiaalin samplaaminen, levyillä kuullaan mm. rasvaimun, pierutyynyjen, ihmisen luiden, rottahäkkien, kalojen, raamatun sivujen ja ties minkä muun ääniä. Nämä tapasivat siten, että toinen näki sattumalta toisen esityksen strippibaarissa, ja ihastuneena kutsui luokseen "harjoittelemaan signaaliprosessointia".

Ostin tuon Civil War LP:n lähinnä minimoidakseni postikulut ja en siis ollut kuullut bändiä käytännössä yhtään. Mainio levy joka tapauksessa, soundimaailmaltaan öh... "orgaaninen" kaikkine folk -juttuineen ja silleen.

The Rose Has Teeth In The Mouth Of The Beast is the newest offering from Drew Daniel and M.C. Schmidt, also known as Matmos. For their fifth album, the San Francisco duo created their most accessible collection of noises to date, but this doesn't mean they've calmed down or are taking a shot at the mainstream. The Rose features the likes of Bjork, Antony (of The Johnsons) and the Kronos Quartet, but also contains samples of burning flesh, a cow vagina and reproductive tract, snails and Daniel's semen. That's right, Matmos recorded semen.

"To record it I put a special contact mic on a sheet of paper and I watched the movie Pink Narcissist, which is the erotic film that James Bidgood spent so much of his life making," Daniel explains about the track "Semen Song For James Bidgood." "I masturbated and recorded the sound of my semen shooting onto the paper."

"It ends up sounding not super-papery, which is good," Schmidt elaborates. "What ended up happening was the rhythm of the gobs hitting the paper make an engaging rhythm. So clinical."

Daniel and Schmidt can't help tumbling over each other's words when describing their new album. They're ecstatic about the project. The Rose features 10 musical portraits of people the two admire, whether it be porn directors (Bidgood), the woman who shot Andy Warhol (Valerie Solanas), iconic DJs (Larry Levan) or Bavarian monarchs (Ludwig II), Matmos have created a soundtrack for their icons that lets listeners in on both a history lesson and an audio adventure.

"It was really fun to have a license to just wallow in the aesthetic of these people we liked," Daniel says. "The flip side of it being fun was that we also felt a certain responsibility that we wouldn't feel if we were just making music to make music.

"You have a responsibility to try your best to reflect something of the aesthetic of someone else who's not you. Even though I don't think [Ludwig] Wittgenstein would have liked our song he probably would hate it I still felt a responsibility. In some cases there was this feeling of freedom that was an ironic, perverse freedom being free of the burden of self-expression. It's not about who am I and what I want to say. It's like, well, what, based on my abilities, can I do to reflect this dead Bavarian monarch?"

Will the duo's wallowing in noises of the world around them reach a peak, or can they continue to explore sounds and music without end?

"It's a uniquely strange thing we've got going," Schmidt says. "Once we don't get any great sounds out of things anymore, then we'll stop. We do it because it's generative, not because it's a funny gimmick."

"If it was a gimmick, it wouldn't have lasted 10 years," interjects Daniel yet again.
