Aapo Rapi on sarjakuvantekijänä imenyt vaikutteensa pääasiassa undergroundsarjakuvasta. Undergroundista puolestaan on sangen lyhyt matka perinteisen suomalaisen korpitaiteilijan mielenmaisemaan. Lähimpinä tätä jatkumoa lienevät Kalervo Palsa sekä Alpo Jaakola, molempien tuotanto pyöri jossain ns.ITE-taiteen, klassisen taiteen ja Mitään UG:tä ei ole olemassa-sarjakuvaestetiikan välimaastossa. Kelomökkien mies on alun perin sarjakuvahahmo, joka edustaa täl...laista itseoppinutta raakaa, luomisvoimaista mutta samalla syrjäytyvää ja masentunutta mieshahmoa.
Sarjakuvahahmona kelomökkien mies syntyi jo yli kymmenen vuotta sitten, mutta ensimmäinen strippialbumi -ja samalla ensimmäinen maalausnäyttely- nähtiin vuonna 2006. Sittemmin kelomökkien mies on pitänyt tuotantoa yllä, suurin osa näyttelystä on uutta materiaalia. Sarjakuva saanee myös jatkoa pikapuoliin.
I guess we have all encountered plenty of these worn out artists who spend their time drinking and lecturing young people in bars. You know the kind: they spend 6 months preparing their "big exhibition" in some friends dodgy gallery and come with the idea of painting 10 2-meter-long cucumbers. Then 4 months later they have again an exhibition (same place) with again the same cucumbers only with the tops cut off. " I changed my concept a bit" they confide in you. Aapo Rapi made a comic about an artist who fulfills all these clihés. Kelomökien mies is about a finnish artists living in the neck of the woods, making grotesq paintings and drinking all his grants away.

Kelomökien Mies was also published in Ilta-Sanomat as a strip in 2006. Now Aapo Rapi is taking the joke even one step further. His works that are on display in Myymälä2 are an attempt to recreate the works of his own fictional comic character. Whereas in the original comic the paintings were ofcourse represented in a typical comic fashion, highly abstracted, they now come to live in all its grotesq glory.
